These smart chopsticks fitted with sensors distinguish between good oil (blue diodes) and contaminated oil (red diodes) and display nutritional data on a smartphone.

Baidu Kuai Sou(China)


A miniaturised, low-cost molecular spectrometer that shows the composition of an object, food, a plant or medication on a smartphone to check its temperature, ingredients, harmlessness or authenticity.

SCiO(Israel)


Developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, these programmable headlights, comprised of sensors, a computer and a projector, automatically adjust depending on the environment and weather conditions. The technology also warns the driver of potential road hazards.

The “world’s smartest motorcycle helmet” offers its user an augmented-reality driving experience. Real-time data is projected onto the visor via Bluetooth from a smartphone, along with the rear view from the 180° camera housed in the voice-controlled helmet.

Inspired by Google Flu Trends, Sickweather analyses Facebook and Twitter content mentioning the symptoms of certain diseases to show epidemic zones like a weather report. Through geofencing, users receive an alert on their smartphone when they are near a hazard area.

Created by eHealth Nigeria, this simple mobile app enables health workers to report potential cases of Ebola in real time. Data is collected by questionnaire, then geolocated and modelled to assess possible outbreaks and allocate resources more effectively.

Electronic ice cubes that contain an accelerometer to measure the mouthfuls of alcohol consumed. This MIT Media Lab innovation changes colour (green/orange/red) with consumption to encourage moderation and pulsate to the music (cool!). A text message is sent when the inferred blood alcohol reaches the alert level.

Iodine reconciles science and opinion to empower individual judgment versus “expert” authority.

This cutting-edge technology combines visual recognition and artificial intelligence to recognise and analyse motions from tiny facial movements. The software can interpret the emotions revealed as well if not better than a human being. This neuroscience-based device changes the wearer’s mood by activating specific parts of the brain through electrical signals in order to boost energy, calm the wearer or sharpen their concentration, as they choose.

Created by a psychologist, 7 Cups of Tea is a website and app offering a free, anonymous therapeutic listening service. The service is based on a community of 25,000 volunteer "listeners", all trained in psychology. Their aim is to provide anonymous emotional support in cases of depression, eating disorders, anxiety, etc.
