Page 21: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

Matthew 24-25 …Matthew 24:6-14(6) You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are

not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.(7) Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There

will be famines and earthquakes in various places.(8) All these are the beginning of birth pains.(9) "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death,

and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(10) At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and

hate each other,(11) and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.(12) Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow

cold,(13) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(14) And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as

a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Page 22: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

Matthew 24-25 …Matthew 24:29-39(29) "Immediately after the distress of those days "'the sun will be

darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'

(30) "Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.

(31) And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

(36) "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

(37) As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

(38) For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;

(40) Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left

Page 23: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

2 Thessalonians 2 …2 Thessalonians 2: 3-10(3) that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of

lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.(4) He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called

God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.

(6) And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time.

(7) For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.

(8) And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming.

(9) The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,

Page 24: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

Daniel 9 …Daniel 9:24-27(24) "Seventy 'sevens' are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish

transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

(25) "Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.

(26) After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.

(27) He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.”

Question 8.Are Believers to ESCAPE or ENDURE these Tribulations ?

Page 51: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

POINTS OF AGREEMENT

TRIBULATION / Affliction upon the Earth – increasing in intensity Either : Ongoing or as intense seven year period at the

end RAPTURE of believers to Christ when he comes in

glory FINAL JUDGEMENT of the Living & the Dead SATAN DESTROYED and his forces of evil ETERNITY in God’s Kingdom by Christ’s Salvation END to suffering, pain and death NEW Heaven & New Earth

Understanding Revelation - Focus on the BIG picture

- not overwhelmed by controversies

Page 52: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

Theory : ESCAPE

Page 53: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

ESCAPE

View = Pre-Millennialism

Great Tribulation = 7 years at the end of time

Rapture = before tribulation starts

Page 54: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

ESCAPE [Pre-Millennialism view = Pre or Mid-Tribulation]

Rev.6-18 = Great Tribulations: only at the end of time before 2nd coming (no great suffering of these types before)

Interpretation from Daniel 9 = 7 years only Believers Raptured before the 7 years tribulation Believers return after tribulations finished

Follows literal pattern of Revelation Direct link to Daniel 9 prophecyDoesn't fit Rev.1:9 – John is partner in Tribulation & EnduranceDoesn't fit 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 = No Tribulation after RaptureDoesn't fit 1 Corinthians 15:51-53= No Tribulation after RaptureDoesn't fit 1 Thessalonians 3:3-4 = We will endure Tribulation &

afflictionsDoesn't fit Matthew 24:9-31 = Believers endure Great Tribulation

before Rapture

Page 55: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

Theory : ENDURE

Ongoing tribulation

Page 56: New Testament Survey no.8: John - Book of Revelation

ENDURE [Post-Millennial & A-Millennial view ] Rev.6-18 = Ongoing Tribulations : throughout human

history – intensifying towards the 2nd coming Believers Endure & are Sealed (protected) through these

tribulations Rapture after the tribulations – before Christ’s Return

Follows Matthew 24:9-31 = Believers endure Great Tribulation before Rapture

Follows message of 1 Thess. 3:3-4 & Rev.1:9 – we endure tribulations

Speaks to tribulations believers experienced in 1st century & ongoing in history

Does not take a completely literal understanding of RevelationDoes not fit with the prophecy of Daniel 9Luke 17:26-32 states - as with Noah & Lot : we will be removed

from God’s wrathRom.5:9 states we shall be saved from the wrath of God1 Thess.5:9 states the church is not destined for the wrath of GodRev.3:10 states Christ will keep Philadelphia church from the Great

Tribulation

Overall Message of Revelation (points of agreement)

CHRIST is Lord & in control of all world events TRIBULATION / Affliction upon the Earth – increasing

in intensity Either : Ongoing or as Great Tribulation : 7 year period

at the end RAPTURE of believers to Christ when he comes in

glory RETURN OF CHRIST FINAL JUDGEMENT of the Living & the Dead SATAN DESTROYED and his forces of evil ETERNITY in God’s Kingdom by Christ’s Salvation END to suffering, pain and death NEW Heaven & New Earth
