God JulGod JulSPM wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Crisis – danger and opportunity! The economic turbulence has caused future predictions and plans to change, in some cases dramatically. Many companies will be affected by the recession and there will also be changes in ownership and management before we are back to normal.
Companies which have not kept up the work with continuously improving efficiency will struggle and may not be able control their own destiny. At times like this, it is critical to understand the right priorities when it comes to improvements necessary to ensure long term survival. The Chinese word for “crisis” is a compound of “dan-ger” and “opportunity”. What is seen as crises by some is seen is opportunities by others. Let us look at the opportunities!
Now is the right time to improve production efficiency and go back to basics in order to understand how the maintenance strategy can be used to improve reli-ability and increase profits in relation to competitors. When production is down, resources and time are available to improve the manufacturing processes and pre-pare the machines for higher utilization. There is time to train staff and implement Condition Based Maintenance to its full potential for future gains.
The old Roman saying “Si vis pacem, para bellum” (“If you want peace, prepare for war”) still applies. We know for certain from previous slowdowns in the economy that companies using the recession to continue to improve productivity will get a head start when the economy improves again and be the long term winners.
Make a difference to your company – have a look at the opportunities that condition based maintenance can give you.

The newcomer has the same techni-
cal properties as other SOLID trans-
ducers, and its sturdy and reliable
construction makes it suitable for a
broad rage of applications. Our lines
of cables and connectors have also
been further developed for optimal
functionality in moist environments,
and a service box for extra protection
of cable joints is now also available.
OPC Data Access is an interna-
tional standard for communication
between computer controlled devic-
es in industrial automation. OPC uses
client/server technology and makes it
possible to transfer measurement or
process data between systems from
different suppliers.
In most companies, large amounts of
data are produced on a daily basis.
The ability to use the same infor-
mation in several systems reduces
the amount of redundant data and
renders unneccessary investments
in extra hardware and software. For
example, the same data from a tem-
perature transducer used by your
PLC system can also be transferred to
Condmaster and used there.
Via OPC, Condmaster can export
raw measurement values, condi-
tion status (green-yellow-red),
symptom values and alarms from
the Intellinova online system. Data
import to Condmaster may be pres-
sure, flow, temperature or load, for
instance. The information can be
used to raise alarms or in connec-
tion with rBe (rule Based evaluation,
etc. Additionally, Intellinova users
may use these data as input for
measurement conditions. To import
and export OPC data to and from
Condmaster, you need to install the
LinX communication software. OPC
functionality in importing/exporting
systems is also required.
Many industrial systems of various
kinds today come with OPC com-
munication capability. Some exam-
ples are WIN-CC, iFix, MatLab och
Siemens PCS 7.

New in Condmaster®Nova 2008One of many useful new features in the new version of Condmaster is the ability to import and export data via OPC.
New transducer in the SOLID lineOur SOLID line of transducers has been augmented with SLD144S, a standard transducer with side entry developed for use in narrow spaces.
Glueable SPM-transducers
Glue-on transducers can replace standard transducers
on thin-walled bearing housings and on machinery
where equipment warranties will not allow the drilling
of standard mounting holes.
The glue-on transducer has a fl at, circular base and
an M3 screw for unloading and fi xing. It is mounted
on a fl at, smoothe surface on the machine using
Loctite 638 or 480 glue. As always, the measuring
point should be carefully selected according to
SPM rules fpr shock pulse and vibration measuring points. For support during curing, the mounting hole may be drilled with a 2.7 mm drill to 4.5 mm depth and threaded for an M3 screw. Plane the surface using a counterbore, min diameter 15 mm. To fi nd out more about our range of transducers and adapters, have a look at our product catalog, available at www.spminstrument.com, or contact us.
Tips & Trix
Tips & Trix
After a major dust explosion at the plant in Västerås nearly two years ago, about 2.4 million EUR was invested for safety improvements. At the incident, dust caught fi re and caused an explo-sion which could be seen and heard over large parts of Västerås.
Because the transported fuel is highly fl ammable, it is essential that no bear-ings get overheated, thereby risking to ignite the fuel. One of the safety meas-ures implemented was the installation of SPM temperature transducers, devel-oped for use in industrial environments. The transducer is connected to a display
module showing the current tempera-
ture while also serving as alarm input to
the control system.
The TMM–12 temperature transducer is
a development of the earlier tempera-
ture transducer TMM–10. The advan-
tage of TMM–12 is that is uses the same
housing as the SOLID line of vibration
transducers. Hence, it is possible to use
the same connectors and accessories for
temperature and vibration monitoring.
The power and heating plant have de-
cided to use this type of monitoring also
on a second conveyor line.
Did you know that shock pulse and vibration transducers can be glued onto the machine if for some reason you can’t or won’t drill holes in the material?

MälarenergiThe Mälarenergi combined
power and heating plant
produces electricity and
district heating. The plant
was built in the 1960s and has
since expanded.
Today, it is equipped with
modern technology to
provide the highest possible
availability with minimum
environmental impact.
The Mälarenergi combined power and heating plant monitors temperature with TMM–12
Sweden’s largest combined power and heating plant, operated by Mälarenergi in Västerås, have installed the new temperature transducer TMM–12 from SPM on all conveyor bearings.

During two wonderful fall days in September, eight people from SPM and 24 SPM users were gath-ered in Kalix in northern Sweden for this year’s User Group Meeting. A well–set and interesting study visit at Billerud Karlsborg, the largest industry in the Norrbotten region, on the first day was followed by an afternoon outdoors with lectures and a string of other activities.
On the second day, a series of pres-entations took place, where partici-pants found out more about new
SPM products launched during 2008. The new online system Intel-linova® was presented, as well as the news in Condmaster®Nova 2008, the new side entry vibration transducer SLD144S with accessories and the SPM service box for the toughest of industrial environments. The new TMM-12 temperature transducer was also demonstrated.
We would like to welcome new and old SPM users to next year’s User Group Meeting!
