For a third straight year, the American automotive industry has posted impressive sales gains, with the truck category lead-ing the way. As of December 2012, Ford’s F-series truck again topped sales charts, with 645,316 units sold—up 10.3% over 2011. As in the previous year, Chevrolet’s Silverado came in sec-

ond with 418,312 units sold. Meanwhile, Ram also made the Top 10 list, coming in fifth with sales of 293,363 units.

The following pages feature new Trucks, SUVs & Off-Road applications that debuted at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Along with the products, we’ve interviewed several industry exec-utives for their perspectives on current trends, along with advice for selling into the category.

Obviously, despite concerns several years ago about the segment’s staying power amid a sluggish economy and rising gas prices, the Trucks, SUVs & Off-Road category remains strong—and continues to present lucrative opportunities for the auto-motive aftermarket. This fact was under-scored at the 2012 SEMA Show in Las

Vegas, where the Ford F-Series was named the Show’s Hottest Truck in the annual SEMA Awards, which honor vehicles most often featured by exhibitors in their booths. Once again, the Jeep Wrangler also reigned supreme as the Show’s Hottest 4x4-SUV.

There is a big increase in SUV sales as consumers look for carrying space and acces-sories that allow the family to be in the car for longer drives. They want to ride in

comfort, so accessories for the interior are in demand. I also see lighting making a big surge, with a lot of new ways to accessorize front and rear lighting with LED bars.

Consumers want intake, exhaust and accessories at a combo price, so dealers should work with manufactures to market multiple products to be sold in one transac-tion. Consumers will then want the dealer to install all of the products at once.

Off-road products are becoming harder to produce and harder to use legally. Con-sumers can’t afford high-dollar items that they can’t use daily or in a legal or approved place. Local and federal laws are becoming less accommodating of the off-road lifestyle.

The EPA is also making some big deci-sions about the standards OEMs should be producing vehicles to, which will affect the development of aftermarket products and how we can modify our vehicles. All SEMA members should be supporting the SEMA Action Network (SAN) and keeping informed about new legislation.

The SUV and truck mar-kets are at a fork in the road. With the exception of the Jeep Wrangler, most new SUVs have become street-friendly, unit-body, sporty,

crossover minivans, and most SUV owners won’t modify their vehicles. On the other hand, new trucks are being marketed for their capabilities. Products that cater to tra-ditional truck functions and capabilities are a good bet, while the days of nearly every 3/4- and 1-ton truck having a 6-in. lift and 37-in. tires are over—at least for now.

The ’07–present Jeep Wrangler aftermar-ket is as hot as ever, but I’m worried that many companies are becoming too depen-dent on that particular vehicle. One reason people modify their vehicles is to stand out. You can’t do that when everyone is build-ing the same vehicle with similar parts. I’m surprised that the other OE manu-facturers haven’t tried to cannibalize the Wrangler segment.

The public is also ready for diesel vehicles outside of the 3/4- and 1-ton truck market. People are catching wind that the new diesels are clean and get great fuel economy. A 1/2-ton diesel pickup would be a great vehicle to offer aftermarket parts for, so we wait for the OEs to build it.

The hottest trend in the street-truck arena has been Ready Lift leveling kits, which give trucks a sleek, sporty style that customers love. We have also increased

our SUV hitch sales for Ford, Hyundai and Kia SUVs. Thule sales continue to be strong with cross bars and roof-top carriers, but the biggest similarity between trucks and SUVs has been our sales of WeatherTech digital-fit floor liners.

Rhino Linings are hot in the off-road market for spraying fender flares, wheel wells, rocker panels and bumpers, and we have been having success with Nitto Terra Grappler tires. LED strip lighting is also a great add-on sale for both parts and labor.

The hot trend is real-world, multipurpose, ’07–present Wranglers that can survive hard trail use on weekends and still serve as family vehicles during the

week, and the four-door JK Wrangler Unlimited is actually a really good fam-ily vehicle. Common modifications are a moderate lift and 35- to 37-in. tires, and upgraded front axle housings are enjoying popularity. So are GM engine swaps as the aftermarket comes on board with solutions to the electronic and programming aspects.

SUVs are leaning more toward tradi-tional family/soccer-mom roles, and pick-ups are taking the reins as performance and/or enthusiast vehicles. (One exception to this would be the SRT8 Grand Chero-kee, which is just an animal in terms of performance and untapped potential.) In general, people are paying closer attention to the negative effect increased weight has on their overall vehicle builds, and alumi-num armor and bumpers that save weight without severely compromising protection have come a long way.

Many new enthusiasts come to the table with a goal of running a certain tire size and aren’t really concerned with how to accomplish it. Retailers have the opportu-nity to bundle wheel/tire/suspension kits to make purchases easier on end users.

The Jeep market has seen continued growth, especially since the introduction of the four-door Jeep JK. Local Jeep and four-wheel clubs hold year-round events that range

from extreme wheelin’ to leisurely trail riding, and we have seen the popularity of these clubs increase over the years. Even so, access to public lands and trails is being drastically reduced or eliminated. SEMA is doing a great job of raising awareness and lobbying against land closures.

Blacked-out wheels and LED lighting are big right now. Soft tonneaus also remain strong, along with diesel performance. Most truck body styles are chang-

ing over the next two years, and that will open the market for new products. It will also mean challenges for manufacturers tooling up and for jobbers getting new product in.

The off-road folks seem to be backing away from the trend toward huge tires, sizing down as they look for some fuel savings. People are much more conscious of fuel economy now, and there doesn’t seem to be as much acces-sorization in SUVs as in pickups. The SUV market involves more practical products. Most of those vehicles already come with side bars or steps. On the other hand, anything having to do with Jeeps is very strong, as was evident at the 2012 SEMA Show.

Our product category––pickup, SUV and van sliding storage trays––has seen tremendous growth over the last year and a half, both for our company and for our competitors, and we have even seen new companies get into the market.

Most jobbers have stabilized over the last year or two. They know the restrictions they’re dealing with now, and while everybody is still a little cautious, they are breathing a little easier.

Consumers are once again spending money on items such as bumpers, wheel and tires and lift kits. Where in 2009–2010 we saw more spending on repair parts,

we’re now seeing a significant increase in accessories. The sales of the Jeep JK Wran-gler can certainly be attributed to this, as its sales have increased by 25%–30% in the last couple of years. The introduc-tion of the four-door Wrangler Unlimited brought in a new group of customers, introducing them to its capabilities and to accessorizing.

Jeep offers a great opportunity for any off-road or truck-parts dealer. The Jeep and off-road markets are lifestyle markets. This means that people want to buy products as a personal expression of the owner, and each Jeep is unique from the next. The Jeep enthusiast is part of a close-knit commu-nity that can be found regionally but also online at forums. Events such as the Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep Beach, Bantam Heritage Jeep Festival and many others draw thou-sands of enthusiasts.

The biggest concern always seems to be what the government decides to do with CAFE rules and how the car manufactur-ers respond. So far, Jeep has stayed pretty much true to its heritage and understands the enthusiasts who buy the vehicles.

In regards to LED, we are lucky that we are at the forefront of that technology as an OE producer, but it’s not quite there yet from a performance and cost standpoint. As the diodes and technology get better and the manufacturers try to reduce power consumption in the car, you will see the price/performance continuum go more in the favor of LEDs, and some of the older technologies will diminish.

We’ve seen the market coming back over the last few years. We are at a point where our sales for off-road lights have exceeded what they were before the recession. The market is not 100% recovered, but things are also not quite as bad as they sound on TV.

Keeping pace with rapid changes in vehicle technology and the implementation of additional safety systems are significant challenges. SEMA has done an excellent job of aligning some of its members with businesses that can aid the aftermarket. The Vehicle Dynamics Program has paved the way for aftermarket manufacturers to test and self-certify that these safety systems are not compromised after the installa-tion of their products via Hardware In Loop testing.

Initially, the program has focused on the installation of lift systems and the result-ing function of electronic stability control (ESC), but ESC is just the tip of the iceberg as related to optional safety systems that will become standard equipment within the next few years, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warnings, accident/pedestrian avoidance programs and so on. Installers should think about who they support and make sure they are supporting those who are concerned and involved with current and future technologies.

The OEMs continue to produce more complicated vehicles in order to achieve mandated safety and fuel-economy standards, and that will force the aftermar-

ket to really step up its game. People want vehicles that can do it all, and they are willing to pay a premium for a suspension that will offer improved performance in addition to increased ride height. Offering customers the ability to fit larger tires with a properly engineered suspension and a great ride is something that they can enjoy every day, even on their daily commutes.

It is less practical to put tall lifts on SUVs than on pickups. They are more compli-cated and expensive to lift, and pickups are still the backbone of every job site, oil field and campground in this country. Even so, Jeep Wrangler JKs are the hottest vehicles on the trail. Armor, drivetrain components and suspension lifts for these vehicles con-tinue to be hot sellers.

In the hardcore realm, rockcrawling seems to be losing ground to more diverse recreation that includes high speeds in addition to rocks. Overland travel is the hottest segment in the off-road market right now, with products such as trailers, roof-top tents and electric fridges steadily gaining in popularity.

The biggest change in the street-truck market is the disappearance of the com-pact truck, leaving the door open for the fullsize mar-ket to grow, and the SUV

market has evolved as well, rendering the minivan almost obsolete. But the biggest trend in the truck market overall is fuel economy without sacrificing power. Ford set the benchmark with the EcoBoost, prov-ing that you can get good gas mileage while maintaining power and performance.

Wheels and tires are still hot items, and tonneau covers are popular as well, with many companies adding new features and benefits. The hot item in the off-road mar-ket is high-quality LED lighting, and the Jeep JK is the hot vehicle as far as custom-izing and accessorizing.

The biggest hurdle in the industry over the next few years will be factory options. Many companies were formed because of a lack of product availability from the fac-tory. Now you can buy a truck with a tow package, rear backup camera, remote start, 22-in. wheels, DVD player, upgraded sus-pension, etc.—all from the dealer.

We will have to be on our toes to stay ahead of the trends in order to compete in the ever-changing market.
