Summer Base Camp Registration 4-H Summer Camp is offered to youth who are in grades 3-6 as of April 2017. Camp will be held June 14– 18, 2017 at Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center in Wisconsin Dells. (Learn more about Upham Woods here: http://fyi.uwex.edu/uphamwoods/). This is a five-day, four-night camping experience where youth stay in cabins at Upham Woods. The purpose of the camp is to build life skills while youth experience nature education, archery, crafts, waterfront activities (swimming/canoeing/kayaking), recreation, campfires, teambuilding activities, and more. Counselors are youth leaders in grades 9-12. The ratio of youth to adults for the camp program is no more than 10 youth to every 1 adult. Adult chaperones are active 4-H volunteers that have completed the youth protection process. Registration forms are due April 14th, 2017. The fee is $195 for 4-H members, and includes all meals, transportation, and activities for the five-day camp. Please note that the fee has increased $10 since last year because the cost of meals at Upham Woods has increased for 2017. Registrations forms are available here: http://washington.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/camp/

Bring a friend to 4-H Summer Camp! 4-H members in grades 3-6 are encouraged to invite a friend to summer camp. Base camp at Upham Woods will now be open to friends of 4-H youth who wish to attend. The “friend” fee for camp is $205. Registration forms for friends of 4-H who want to attend summer camp are available here: http://washington.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/camp/

Camperships Available Any youth who want to attend Washington County 4-H Base or Outpost Camp may apply for a campership. This is an opportunity to have $50 of your camp expenses covered by the Washington County 4-H Leaders Association. Campership applications are due March 15, 2017 to the UW-Extension Office. Applications are available here: http://washington.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/camp/

Camp Adult Staff Recruitment Applications are available on the website: http://washington.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/camp/

Adults are needed to work with the youth resource staff in the areas of nature, archery, recreation, and water-front and to chaperone the cabins. Male chaperones are especially needed for 2017! If you know of any male alumni or any dads or grandfathers who would be great camp chaperones, please recommend them to Brianna. If they are not currently enrolled volunteers, we can get them trained before camp.

Outpost River Adventure Camp 4-H Outpost River Adventure Camp is offered to youth who are in grades 7-8 as of April 2017 Camp will be held June 14-18, 2017. Campers will stay at Devil’s Lake State Park and at several other campsites along a river route. This is a five-day, four-night camping experience where youth stay in tents and use outdoor toilets. They will also be canoeing to different destinations along Wisconsin river ways. The purpose of the camp is to build life skills while youth experience canoeing, hiking, swimming, campfire cook-ing, and teambuilding activities. The camp is led by adult chaperones who are active 4-H volunteers that have completed the youth protection process, along with Upham Woods staff. This river adventure camp experience is limited to 20 youth who are currently enrolled in Washington County 4-H. Registration forms are due April 14, 2017.

Communication and Arts Festival – Saturday, March 25, 2017 at UW-Washington County Please encourage youth to participate! This event is an opportunity for youth to display their talents and skills in 9 different communication and arts categories. Review the general information and class details to see all the options and the Communication and Arts Festival webpage for more details. The festival is also a great chance for youth to experience and practice face-to-face judging in many categories and receive valuable feedback on their work. Most categories are judged at the event but posters and writing are judged ahead of time so you don’t need to actually be at the event. Participants only need to be present during their judging time but are encouraged to participate in other aspects of the event. Youth don’t need to be enrolled in a particular project in order to partic-ipate so it’s a great opportunity to try out something new. Youth can try out Irish Dance during one of the two interactive workshops from 8:30-9:00 am or 9:30-10:00 am. There is no requirement to participate in any other part of the event to do the workshop. Online Registration Fast and simple Google form: https://goo.gl/forms/TMnqIIg4b1KCe7dR2

Closes Monday, March 6. An adult leader from the club is responsible for registering, using the Google form above, any youth

whose poster is going on to the county level and the Performing Arts-Group.

A note appears on the Google form under both the Poster and Performing Arts-Group section that individuals do NOT need to enter themselves and that a leader from the club will enter them.

The posters will need to be brought to the UW-Extension office by Monday, March 6. If anyone needs assistance registering, call the UW-Extension Office.

Club Participation Incentive The 4-H club with the greatest percentage of members that participate in the Communication and Arts Festival will receive an award of $25 from the Leaders Association.

Participation is based on members that register to participate in the event, regardless of category (Irish

dance workshop included)

Each member just gets counted once, it doesn’t matter how many categories they participate in.

If a youth participates in the event as member of either the countywide clowning or theatre arts project,

their participation still goes towards the member participation percentage for their club.

New Family Orientation Please continue to promote New Family Orientation- Part 2. The focus is on record books and preparing for the County Fair. We’ll even have staff from the Agriculture and Industrial Society (who runs the County Fair) present to orientate new families to the registration process for County Fair. Although the program is geared towards new members, it could be very beneficial for second and third year members as well or anyone wanting a better understanding of those topics. Dinner is provided and is a great time to meet and talk with other new families and experienced 4-H youth and adults. There will be hands-on activities, resources and tip sheets, and time to ask questions of 4-H youth and adult volunteer and UW-Extension 4-H Staff. Part 2: When: Thursday, March 30, 5:30-8:00 pm Where: Washington County Fair Park – Ziegler Building Topics: Record books and preparing for the County Fair. Registration: Register by March 16th through Google forms https://goo.gl/forms/H8zKxA834pCaRPNI3 or contact Ginny Bichler at [email protected] or 262.335.4478.

RESOURCE of the MONTH

Understanding Insurance Resource

Understanding the difference between the types of insurance, what it covers, and when you need it is often tricky…until now. A leader posed a question in which we contacted American Income Life Insurance Company and they shared the enclosed flow chart that was just recently created and is incredibly helpful.

We know that many clubs go tubing so of particular importance to note is that the annual $1 a year policy that

we take out for all 4-H members and leaders doesn’t cover any downhill winter sports. We recommend that clubs

take out the special activities insurance which is easy to obtain through a simple online form. There are three

options $0.20 per person/day, $0.25 per person/day, and $0.30 per person/day. There is an $8.00 minimum so if

you are going to be under that anyways you might as well take out the higher policy per person as that provides

greater coverage.

Amazon Smile Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organizations selected by

their customers. Thompson Irish Settlers set up their club as one of those organizations to receive funds. They put

together an instruction guide on how to set up a club as a charitable organization and is enclosed for your

reference.

Youth Leadership Workshop Youth leaders (and aspiring youth leaders) have the opportunity to build their skills through a series of county-wide workshops. The third and final workshop is coming up this month. The fourth workshop scheduled for May 25 has been cancelled. Please encourage youth leaders to participate!

Upcoming Workshop What to Do When You Don’t Get Along Monday, March 27, 2017, Washington County Public Agency Center, Room 3005 Register by March 24 by clicking on the Google form link: https://goo.gl/6eKUDF or calling (262) 335-4478.

If one team member can’t agree with another, should both just quit? No! Learn how to get through tough situa-

tions with some conflict resolution techniques you can use as a leader. You can use these when you are leading a

group that is stuck in conflict, or when you find yourself in conflict with another person

Choosing Coverage for 4-H Special Events

Dear 4-H Club General Leaders: The Washington County Dairy Promotion Committee has received fantastic feedback from the 4-H promotional program Washington County Cows on Parade to help promote dairy products. We hope that you’ll participate again or for the first time this year. For any Washington County 4-H Club that wants to participate in this contest, please read the information requirements contained in this letter.

1. The ‘cow on parade’ contact person for your club must register with Barbara Schulz Kluever by March 30, 2017. Let her know the club, the name of the contact person with their email and phone number, and where you plan to display your cow. She is available at 262-353-2222 or at [email protected].

2. Plywood cows can be obtained from the milking parlor at the Fair Park on Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 9:00 – 12:00 noon. Hopefully many find this date convenient as many clubs will already have representation at Fair Park that day for the Tri County Shooting Sports Tournament. The cows will contain two metal rods and hardware for securing. Clubs can pick up their cow from last year; however, it must be redesigned or redecorated for this year’s parade. Each club will receive a $25.00 gift card when they pick up their cow to use to purchase any items needed to decorate their cow. The cow can be painted or decorated in any design your committee chooses. It must contain a dairy message or current Wisconsin dairy fact that can be read at a reasonable distance. Added props like a hat, sunglasses, scarf, etc. can be used as well. Be certain to finish the decoration with a polyurethane or exterior sealant.

3. Place the cow “out to pasture” in a visible location within the county by June 1, 2017. This can be a front yard of a home, a piece of grassy area of a business, or any high traffic area within the county.

4. Bring the cow to the Breakfast on the Farm location by Thursday evening, June 8 and place them at a place known in a future email. The 2017 location is Golden E Dairy, located at the corner of Orchard Valley Road and Shalom Drive in Farmington Township. The dairy is owned and operated by Chris and Tracy Elbe and their family. The Dairy Promotion Committee will secure an appropriate pasture to place all cows. Visitors will be asked to judge the cows during the Breakfast on the Farm, finding first, second and third place. One club will receive first place, $30.00, one club will receive second place, $20.00, and one club will receive third prize, $10.00.

5. Each 4-H Club will be responsible to take their cows back home “out to pasture” in a visible location for the duration of June Dairy Month.

6. The cows must return to the Fair Park by Friday, July 21 at the south east corner of the Beef Barn, where, again, they will be put out to pasture for the duration of the Washington County Fair. Many families will probably be at Fair Park during this week for barn or building set-ups for fair. It can be dropped off whenever it’s convenient and the gates are open. Just place your cow and hardware at the south east side of the Beef Barn under an awning.

7. The Dairy Promotion Committee will take possession of the cows and store them until next year. Any added props on your cow must be removed after 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, 2017.

Use your imagination to develop your club’s dairy cow on parade. Use your creativity in promoting the Wisconsin dairy industry, dairy products, the nutritional value of dairy products, or other dairy facts. The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board provides promotional ideas that are available through the UW-Extension Office in the spring, or online at www.wmmb.com and at www.eatwisconsincheese.com . If your 4-H club is interested in participating in this contest, registration is required before March 30, 2017 with Barbara Schulz Kluever. Please call 262-353-2222 or email her at [email protected] if you are planning to participate and where your display will be located.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me. Sincerely, Barbara Schulz Kluever Washington County Dairy Promotion Committee See calendar of important dates on the next page.

Help keep 4-H Military Kids Camps OPEN in 2017

Military service members make many sacrifices. And so do their children.

Children whose parents serve in the armed forces experience many emotional challenges when their parents are away during a tour of service, and also when they return. They have been separated for months and sometimes for a year or more. Their parents miss so many important events — concerts, sporting events, honor banquets, club meetings, prom, and even graduation. When their parents return, it is often difficult for them to communicate with one another.

Wisconsin 4-H Military Kids is a program that provides opportunities for service members and their families to partake in various outings including summer camps for children of military men and women. Approximately 75 children attend camps at Upham Woods in Wiscon-sin Dells each summer. These camps provide children of military families with a place to go and share their feelings with other children experiencing the same emotions. They create friendships and outlets for sharing with one another. They have a few days to relax and have fun! The camps this past summer were a huge success! Check out some of the pictures on the OMK Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/WisconsinOperationMilitaryKids?ref=hl.

The U.S. Department of Defense provided funding for the camp, but recently cut funding. We need to continue to raise funds so that military kids can go to camp this summer. Please take a moment to watch this video and/or share with your 4-H club members: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiQ36JSF-rc&fea-ture=youtu.be.

There are additional ways you and your club members can make 4-H camps possible:

1. Place donation cans at local businesses. A coffee can may be used.

2. Conduct a special fundraiser. It could be a spaghetti dinner, a walk/run or a silent auction. Be creative!

3. Donate from existing club funds. If your club typically donates to local charities or causes, military kids would be grateful for your donation.

Such generosity would provide a great service to our men and women who bravely serve, and more importantly, provide a special moment for their children who also show bravery. I can’t stress enough how important these camps are to these children. When I visited camp last summer to speak with the participants, I found out that some of them had been coming for a few years. I also learned that a few of the counselors had attended the camps themselves! Please help.

Ongoing fundraisers can be conducted through the summer of 2017. All donations should be remitted via check payable to the University of Wisconsin-Extension and mailed to:

Noah Samuelsen, Rio Go-Getters President, N4383 Jacobson Drive, Rio, WI 53960

Please include a brief note indicating how the funds were raised. Donations are tax exempt. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I hope to hear from each of your clubs by way of a check. I thank you and so do the campers!

This year, I’d like to challenge all 1,300 Wisconsin 4-H clubs to a Change Challenge for 2017 Wisconsin 4-H Military Kids Camps. Each club, during the months of March and April, can ask members to set aside spare change. At the end of April, count up all of the funds and write a check to UW-Extension and send it to me. The winning club will have their picture posted on the OMK Facebook page, the Wisconsin 4-H website and in the Columbia County 4-H Newsletter.

Amazon Smile Organization Setup Step 1) Go to org.amazon.com

Step 2) Select the Register Now button. Step 3) Complete all the questions and make sure you have your club's EIN, which is used on your Charter Renewal, or type in your club name. I would suggest using the EIN. Your club will appear as Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. None of the Washington County Clubs appear under their own name. Step 4) Go to your club's email, which is what you should have entered when prompted. Then click on the link in the email to complete the process. Step 5) You will need to PDF a voided check and upload it. Step 6) This should complete the registration process for your club. Step 7) I then contacted Amazon to have them change the name to the club's name. On the org.amazon.com webpage at the bottom on the left there is a Contact Us link. I used that to contact them to change the name.
