Australian Firm Uses MegaMc® and TracStar® Machines inUrgent Flood Dewatering ProjectIn early June 2012, the southeastern Australian state of Victoria received an amazing amount of rainfall. Areas in thestate received a month's worth of rain in a single day. One city even reported a record 5.2 inches of rainfall in 24 hours, the most ever in 133 years of weather records.
The rains in Victoria battered the Morwell River, which on June 6th,crested its banks. The Morwell topped a 40footwide levee, allowingthe river to flood the Yallourn opencut mine, located about 130kilometers east of Melbourne. With nearly 800 megaliters of waterentering the mine per day (with a maximum of 2,600 megaliters at thepeak), the river turned the Yallourn mine into "Lake Yallourn." Thecoalpowered Yallourn station provides nearly a quarter of Victoria'spower supply when at full capacity. The waters from the Morwell Riverdamaged three key coal conveyors that shuttled coal from the mine tothe power plant, forcing a 75 percent cut in the plant's powergeneration.
Initially, local news outlets reported that the mine would take monthsto repair and get back online. The main concern was getting thebillions of liters of water out of the mine so that conveyor equipmentcould be repaired. The government and mine owner TRUenergy reached out to GEM Industrial Services to design andconstruct an emergency dewatering pipeline system that would be used to divert the flow of the Morwell River out ofthe mine and into the nearby Latrobe River.
In 2006, GEM Industrial Pty Ltd began as a firm that specialized in providing plumbing services to the dairy processingindustry. Today, they have become one of the premier pipe fusion providers in Australia. Their work portfolio rangesfrom effluent treatment to gas conversion to the water industry, including projects such as the emergency dewatering ofthe Yallourn Mine.
GEM Industrial Pty Ltd's fusion equipment and operators, along with subcontractors, were deployed to the site on June28th and began welding 12meter long strings of 1,600mm pipe with a McElroy MegaMc® 2065. The twojaw fusionmachine ran continuously, 24 hours a day, creating 120meter long strings. The 2065 and crew was subcontracted infrom Western Australia to assist with the work on this huge task. Secondary fusion sites used a more powerfulMegaMc® 1600 to fuse the tieins of SDR 21 pipe, as well as finish several 120meter strings.
Both the MegaMc 2065 and 1600 are capable of fusing 20 to 65inch OD pipe (500mm to 1600mm). The 1600
features two additional jaws that offer large amounts of clamping force per jaw. A stronger, more powerful facer is 40percent faster, with the ability to take on heavywalled pipes. The 1600 also provides 88,000 pounds of fusion force forovercoming drag. Hydraulic power assists all fusion functions, including operation of the jaws, pipe lifts, heater andfacer.
The relatively new MegaMc 1600 was not in Australia at the time ofthe flood, but GEM worked with McElroy’s Australian distributor ISCOIndustries to get the highforce fusion machine in the country as soonas possible.
"This 1600 fusion machine had already been manufactured byMcElroy for the Australian market," said Trace Temcoff, operationsmanager for ISCO Australia. "(The machine) was still located at ourPryor, Oklahoma facility. ISCO secured the services of a freightforwarder to air freight the 1600 into Australia via Qantas Airways."
"Trace, along with the team at ISCO Australia, were fantastic as usual, they are always willing to help out," said Darren Chandler, managingdirector for GEM Industrial Pty Ltd. "I enjoy Trace and the ISCO team’sexperience, and I especially like the robustness of the McElroyequipment and the service they provide is second to none. We have other machines in our fleet, but most of the stafflike the McElroys for many reasons."
On August 14th, GEM moved the final pipeline section into place and connected to the pump station at the MorwellRiver. It marked the end of a month and a half of constant fusion operations.
In addition to the 3.8 kilometers of 1600mm pipe, three crews installed more than 35 kilometers of 500mm and 630mmas part of the dewatering program at Yallourn Mine. GEM used a TracStar® 900 and TracStar® 500s to complete thispipeline on time and under budget. McElroy DataLoggers® were also used on site to provide quality assurance to theclient.
GEM built a working relationship with McElroy distributor, ISCO Industries, in 2009 with the purchase of their firstTracStar. Since then, ISCO has provided operation training to their fusion operators in both butt and saddlefusiontechniques, as well as technical support of their McElroy equipment. With the help of McElroy fusion equipment andtheir local McElroy distributor, GEM Industrial Pty Ltd completed the project for TRUenergy ahead of schedule, underbudget and safely by using sound planning and seeking out the latest technologies. By providing a swift and thoroughsolution, GEM halted a situation that was worth millions of dollars a day in income to the coal mine and power plant.
Sincerely,
Tyler Henning

Product Spotlight – DataLogger® 4The McElroyDataLogger® 4is used to record and document key parameters of thefusion process. The device can be used to verify that proper fusion procedures havebeen followed prior to installation. The DataLogger consists of a rugged, handheldcomputer as the recording device connected to a pressuresending device. Thepressuresending device digitizes and sends pressure data to the handheld computerto generate joint reports for infield review or transfer to a desktop computer for archiveor further analysis.
The DataLogger 4 features FusionGuide™, which gives a faster go/nogo interpretationof graphs generated by the DataLogger. Trained inspectors can look at theFusionGuide data to determine if a fusion joint was fused with correct pressure andtimes according to supported standards.
