Dear Homeowners,

Season’s GreetingsThis is the season to wish everyone Happy Holidays and give thanks to the

employees who have provided service to the homeowners during the past year. Thisincludes our maintenance personnel, grounds keepers, and especially our restaurantemployees who host for us one of the finest restaurants in the Marina. We all knowthat our chefs prepare the best food bar none. The Marina City Property has beenmanaged very well during the last year and the management company should becomplimented for it. The Sky Security Services has protected our property and hasbeen responsive when we needed other types of services. An example is that theyminimized damages to multiple units by shutting off water valves and that is notwithin their scope of duties. We can be proud of the fact that the ManagementCouncil renewed the contract with Sky Security Services for another year.

Double TaxationThe Homeowners have been complaining, and justifiably so, about being taxed

double. We pay ground rent, we pay taxes on the units based on proposition 13, andwe are required to pay a third tax known as Possessory Interest Tax. The Board ofEqualization will be encouraged to repeal the Possessory Interest Tax levied here atthe Marina City Club. To do so, each homeowner will be asked to sign a petitionrequesting the Board of Equalization to act on repealing the Possessory Interest Tax.Please contact the management company office to obtain a petition for circulation. We can be successful in our effort if all homeowners participate. I will personally takethe petition to the Board of Equalization and encourage them to act on your behalf. When we are successful in 2013, we can rejoice and say Happy New Year.

Fitness CenterThe Fitness Center renovation, which started early November, is on track to be

completed in four months. The Fitness Center renovation is designed: to upgrade theFitness Center; make it more attractive; increase membership; and increase ourproperty values. While there will be some inconvenience, you will be proud andable to boast about the property once the project is completed. Thank you for yourcontinued cooperation.

Appointment of Permanent General ManagerAt the last Management Council Meeting Susan Larson of Seabreeze

Management Company was recommended to be the General Manager of theMarina City Club. For more than a year we conducted a nationwide search toreplace Ms. Karen DuBose. During this time Ms. Larson served as Interim GeneralManager and did an outstanding job. After careful consideration it was apparentthat Ms. Larson was head and shoulders above the other candidates. Ms. Larsonpreviously held the position of President of Seabreeze Management Company. Sheattended every Management Council Meeting and Homeowner Meeting afterSeabreeze Company was selected to manage the Marina City Club property. Ms.Larson is well qualified and will serve the homeowners well.

RecyclingWaste Management started collecting our trash in November and has a more

complete recycling program than NASA, our previous trash collector. This changeinitially saves the homeowners over $25,000 annually. If we cooperate andparticipate in the recycling program we will derive dividends and additional savingswhen we renegotiate our next contract. Full participation will require that you bag allcontaminated “disposable” trash and place it in the trash chutes. All bottles, cans, and paper will be deposited in the recycle bin located next to the trash chute. Yourcooperation will earn us money and protect our environment. Please explain therecycling program to your housekeepers.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. I’m very proud to have served as yourPresident in 2011.

N ovember 11-13, 2011 marked anothertrip to the beautiful Shadow Mountain

Resort in Palm Desert for the Marina CityClub faithful. Friday was beautiful, withcasual doubles played by members and thepro, Gene, in the late afternoon in balmydesert weather under clear skies. Saturdaymorning, the skies opened and kept thecourts wet all day, preventing us fromplaying a much-anticipated match withIronwood Country Club. Members went tomovies, casinos, The Living Desert, andrelaxed by shopping. Saturday night was awonderful four-course dinner at The Nest, adesert hot-spot, with live music and dancing.Eighteen members attended the dinner anda wonderful time was had by all.

On Sunday morning, we played mixeddoubles against Shadow Mountain and ourteam won all but one match. It was abeautiful day and everyone was thrilled toget some tennis in, before returning toMarina Del Rey that afternoon. Althoughthe weather did not cooperate completely,we had another memorable trip to thedesert with friends.

Annual Palm DesertTennis Weekend

T he Marina City Club hosted our first Junior Kids Dayon Saturday November 5, 2011 from 1-3pm on

courts 1 and 2. Several brave and generous membersvolunteered their time to help set up quickstart tenniscourts, barbeque, and coach the kids so they couldgain a love and respect for the game of tennis. Fivekids showed up and played for between 1 and 2 hours, getting instruction from Diane, Gene, and othermembers. All the kids played games in the quickstarttennis format, keeping score with clothespins on the 36’courts. They played singles and doubles, as well as theold standby “jail.” At the end, every kid received prizes, including a t-shirt, tattoos, notebooks, rules of tennis, keychains, and balls. These were provided generously byDiane and the Southern California Tennis Association. After tennis, the kids and parents enjoyed barbequecooked by Chris and Brian. We hope to do another kidsday in the spring. We hope to see you there!

Gene’sMonthly Tip

T he weather’s getting cold, somake sure you warm up before

your matches during the wintermonths. Pre-match warm-up shouldconsist of dynamic stretching, somelight jogging around the court (3 lapsis ideal), and some footwork exercisesso you are ready to move from pointone. Arm circles, trunk rotations, andknee bends are just some of theexcellent dynamic stretches you cando. For a visual on these exercises, check out Gene’s latest video onyoutube called, “5 Dynamic Stretchesfor Tennis.” See you on the courts!
