New York City
New York City is the capital of the state of New York.
It is the largest city in the United States.
It is the 4th largest city in the world. It is half way between Boston and
Washington, D.C.
New Yorkers
8,175,133 people live in the city. Many immigrants have come to live in NYC,
especially African Americans from the American South, Italians, Irish, Jewish and Puerto Ricans. It’s called a “melting pot.”
In NYC, 800 languages are spoken. The is population diverse : 35% is white,
23% is black, 13% is Asian, and 29% is Latino.
NYC was founded by the Dutch in 1626. They called it “New Amsterdam”
In 1664, the British took over and the King of England gave the city to his brother, the Duke of York.
It has 5,538 tall buildings, and 50 skyscrapers taller than 200 meters.
