  • Basic Principles of Solvent CementingTo make consistently good joints, the following points should be clearly understood:

    1. The joining surfaces must be softened and made semi-fluid2. Sufficient cement must be applied to fill gap between pipe and fitting3. Assembly of pipe and fittings must be made while the surfaces are still wet and cement is still fluid4. Joint strength develops as the cement dries. In the tight part of the joint the surfaces will tend to fuse together in the loose part,

the cement will bond to both surfaces. These areas must be softened and penetrated

Safe Handling of Solvents When using solvent cements, primers and cleaners there are some basic safety measures all users should keep in mind.

    1. After every application of solvent on the pipe / fitting ensure to put the lid back on the solvent cement container & tighten the lid slightly to avoid evaporation & escape of solvent

    2. Avoid prolonged breathing of solvent vapors. When pipe and fitting are being joined in enclosed areas, the use of ventilating devices are advised

    3. Keep the cements, primers and cleaners away from all sources of ignition, heat, sparks and open flame4. Keep containers of cements, primers and cleaners tightly closed except when the product is being used5. Dispose of all rags used with solvents in a proper outdoor waste receptable6. Avoid eye and skin contact. In case of eye contact, flush with plenty of water for 15 minutes and call a physician

  • Cutting

Cut the pipe square handsaw with suitable guide or pipe cutter.

    Deburring

Chamfer or Deburr pipe, at 10-15 Degree. Remove burrs from inside & outside diameters with a knife, file or abrasive paper. Insert the pipe into the fitting and check that the interference occurs about 1/3rd to 2/3rd of the socket depth. Too tight or loose filment may lead to leak, hence should be avoided. Remove any dirt, moisture, or grease from pipe end and fitting sockets with a clean dry rag.

    Solvent Cement Application

Apply cement uniformly to inside of socket and outside of pipe end with a bristle nylon brush and a second coat of cement to pipe end. Apply cement quickly to prevent it from drying and completely cover all jointing surface area of the pipe and fitting. Do not apply excessive cement in bell socket.

    Jointing

After applying the last coat of cement to the pipe, while cement is still wet (within 20 seconds)forcefully bottom the male end of the pipe in the socket giving pipe or fitting 1/4th turn to distribute the cement evenly.

    Wiping

Wipe with a clean dry cloth after applying the solvent.

    Cleaning

Cleaning with the cloth outside of the pipe & inside of the socket.

  • EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION OF PIPES

uPVC pipes, like all piping materials, expand and contracts with changes in temperature. They expand or contract 4.5 to 5 times more than steel or iron pipes. The extent of the expansion – contraction depends upon the co-efficient of linear expansion of piping material. A 25 0F change in temperature can cause an expansion of 1” for a 100 ft. Straight length. For most installation and operating conditions, expansion and contraction can be accommodated at changes of direction.

    The co-efficient of the thermal expansion (Y) for PVC is 3.1 X 10 in./in./ 0F.

The amount of expansion or contraction can be calculated using the following formula:

    L = Y ( T1 – T2 ) X L L = Dimensional change due to thermal expansion or contraction (in.) Y = Expansion coefficient (in./in./ 0F)

(T1 – T2) = Temperature differential between the installation temperature and the maximum or minimum system temperature, whichever provides the greatest differential ( 0F).

L = Length of pipe run between changes in direction (ft.)

There are several ways to compensate for expansion and contraction. The most common methods are:

    • Expansion loops which consist of pipe and 900 elbows• Piston type expansion joints*• Flexible bends*• Bellows and rubber expansion joints**The manufacturers of these devises should be contacted to determine the suitability of their products for the specific application.

Expansion loops are simple and convenient way to compensate for

expansion and contraction when there is sufficient space for the loop

in the piping system. A typical expansion loop design is shown below:

The length of leg ‘R’ can be determined by using the following formula to ensure that it is long

enough to absorb the expansion and contraction movement without damage. The length of

leg ‘A’ should be ½ the length of leg ‘R’.

    R = 1.44 D L R = Expansion loop leg length (ft.)

D = Nominal outside diameter of pipe (in.)

    (See table below)

L = Dimensional change due to thermal expansion or contraction (in.)

When installing the expansion loop, no rigid or restraining supports should be placed within the

leg lengths of the loop. The loop should be installed as closely as possible to the mid-point between anchors. Piping support guides should restrict

lateral movement and direct axial movement into the loop. Lastly, the pipe and fittings should be solvent cemented together, rather than using

    threaded connections.

Compensation for expansion and contraction in underground application is normally achieved by snaking the pipe in the trench. Proper trenching and

burial procedures must be followed to protect the piping system.

The table below shows recommended offsets and loop lengths for piping up to 21/2” nominal size.

  • “ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSIs Raksha AaSAaN FIT UV Protected? uPVC compound used for manufacturing of pipes and fittings are already UV protected. Earlier more than 45 years of use has shown that there is no deterioration in pressure withstanding capacity of uPVC pipes which have been installed under the sunlight, even after several years of installation. However, for extra protection for pipes which are directly under harsh sunlight, an Elastomeric water soluble paint may be used to coat over the pipes & fittings in two layers to give the best results. UV resistance prevents the oxidation

process and helps to increase the durability of pipes and fittings.

Why Lead Free? Lead is a poisonous chemical element that can cause adverse affect on a human body like brain disorder, nervous system failure and blood disorders. RAKSHA is totally committed for your well being thus introducing RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit pipes and fittings that are completely lead free and will deliver completely non-toxic clean and hygienic water. Lead free plumbing system is the most preferred and favoured for potable water transportation worldwide.

Will it act as a catalyst for the materials it carries? NO, RAKSHA AaSAaNFit pipes and fittings do not act as a catalyst, as it does not react with any material it carries.

What is the expected life span of RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit pipes and fittings? The process of manufacturing clubbed with high standards of quality control & stringent quality assurance procedures at all

Is RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit pipes and fittings pocket friendly (cost effective)? Definitely YES, RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit pipes and fittings takes 25-30% less time than metal systems. Also, being lightweight it reduces transportation, handling and installation costs.

Have you taken health, safety and fire toxicity into consideration? RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit pipes and fittings is manufactured from a raw material (compound) which is completely lead free and hence most preferred and favoured system in terms of health and safety. Also, RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit pipes and fittings is completely fire resistant and self extinguishing.

Can RAKSHA AaSAan Fit pipes and fittings be used at a temperature around 100-150 C ? It is possible to use RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit pipes and fittings at a temperature around 10-15 degree celcius. At a temp. below 230degrees, uPVC becomes brittle, but there is no reduction in hydrostatic strength of material. Only thing that needs to be considered is that very sound engineering design considerations are required to eliminate water hammers and impact issues.

Why RAKSHA AaSAan Fit pipes and fittings? Lead Free, UV resistant, fire resistant, easy installing, durability, cost effectiveness, environmental friendly, high pressure bearing capacity makes RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit as a highly preferred piping solution for domestic and industrial purposes.

Should Specific type of primer and solvent cements be used on Joining system? RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit always recommends use of solvent cements which is specifically manufactured to meet the requirements of ASTM-D 2467. All purpose cements should be avoided.

stages translate into a long service life. RAKSHA AaSAaN Fit is having a service life of more than 50 years.

  • What About the noise emissions compared to metallic systems? The tendency of sound is to travel in the material with fastest possible velocity. This means in PVC systems, the sound emissions is far below then metal system.

Set Time and cure time schedule 1) Set time is the necessary time to allow before the joint can be carefully handled. 2) Cure time is the necessary time to allow before pressurizing the system. 3) Set time and cure time depends on • type of cement • pipe diameter • weather conditions (Temperature, humidity, etc.) •The interference fitness of pipes and fittings
