New Zealand and India enjoy a long standing and a very positive relationship. We share a Commonwealth heritage, legal system, English as business language, democratic relations and a shared passion for the sport of cricket. New Zealand is home to over 150,000 people of Indian origin (4% of total population), with Hindi as the fourth most spoken language.
New Zealand places a strong emphasis on education. We pride ourselves on an education system which nurtures creativity and innovation; which celebrates independent thinking and problem solving and which inculcates in students a culture of learning and team work.
India is our second largest source market for international students. New Zealand campuses recorded over 28,000 Indian students in 2016 with our universities seeing an increase of 19% enrolments over 2015.
The New Zealand Excellence Awards are a great way to encourage ambitious and capable Indian students to choose New Zealand as their higher education destination and join the existing cohort of Kiwi Ambassadors around the world. These Awards offer an outstanding opportunity for Indian students to experience world class New Zealand education, while developing life-long people to people links right across the globe and enjoying all that New Zealand has to offer while contributing to New Zealand’s global linkages, fostering future diplomatic, trading and investment links.
A New Zealand experience offers cultural understanding and economic opportunities worldwide.
My best wishes to you all as you enter an exciting new era of learning that will benefit both our countries.

Following the success of the 2016 New Zealand Excellence Awards, I am delighted to announce the 2017 round of the scholarships.
The New Zealand Excellence Awards are a joint initiative of Education New Zealand and New Zealand’s eight universities. They offer high-achieving Indian undergraduate and graduate students a chance to advance their careers through specialist study in New Zealand.
We were very happy with the enthusiastic response that these scholarship awards received across India’s key metro cities and other regions, and the high calibre of students who applied. Through the 2016/17 round, 31 of India’s top scholars studied at New Zealand universities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, business and design, and enjoyed the special Kiwi lifestyle.
We look forward to welcoming a new group of scholars to our universities for the 2017/18 round.
New Zealand is a premier education destination and Indian students have much to gain from studying at New Zealand universities. All eight of our universities are ranked among the top 3 percent globally. A New Zealand education provides essential academic skills and supports students to think critically and creatively, and to apply those skills in the workforce.
New Zealand also benefits in many ways – socially, culturally, intellectually – as Indian students make their way to our campuses. New Zealand Excellence Award recipients are helping to strengthen ties between our two countries by contributing to a broader exchange of ideas in our universities and building our respective research capabilities. They also add richness to our communities and workplaces.
The kaupapa (values) of New Zealand are to embrace visitors with an open mind and open heart, recognising that we are all richer for the experience of knowing each other.
We are proud that New Zealand will play a role in shaping the education journey of increasing numbers of talented young people who will be India’s future leaders.
I wish you all the best in your application, and look forward to welcoming you to New Zealand – Nau mai, haere mai.
