Management treatments for the Red Pine Project will be in section 16 and include five stands. Stands 30, 37, 38, 50 and 51 will be seed tree/shelter- wood harvested, scarified and allowed to naturally regenerate to red pine. Due to the previous jack pine in some of the stands, regeneration including some jack pine will also be acceptable. Soil and Topography: Rubicon and Roselawn Sands. Flat to rolling hills. There is only severe slope in the far North portion of the compartment. The rest of the land does not have much slope. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: This compartment is almost totally state owned land. There is a portion of the compartment that is private property, the SW NW of section 9. This area of private ownership is only about 8 acres. Unique, Natural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): MNFI states the potential for Goshawk, eagle, and osprey. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): None are listed. Special Management Designations or Considerations: Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: There are no fisheries concerns or considerations for this compartment. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Compartment 25 is part of a large landscape ecosystem in northern Luce County known as the northern needleleaf forest, specifically jack pine-red pine forest. A few aspen stands are scattered in the southwestern most area of the compartment. There are no water features within the compartment itself, but its position in the landscape is approximately two miles from Lake Superior and less

than a mile from the Two Hearted River. Major management objectives across this landscape are to maintain fairly even representation of age classes and to maintain interstand diversity. Wildlife objectives in this compartment are to maintain habitat type diversity and inter-stand diversity by encouraging the retention of a variety of tree species in managed stands. Plant species diversity encourages wildlife species diversity and this is the ultimate goal. Retention of hard and soft mast bearing trees, trees with suitable raptor nest bearing structure, snags, wildlife den trees and coarse woody debris in all stands should be maintained or developed where deficient. Forested corridors should be maintained to facilitate movement from upland areas to lowland areas, and no cut buffers applied to streams, rivers and drainages to serve as travel corridors and to enhance and protect riverine, lacustrine and wetland wildlife and plant communities. Species utilizing this compartment include white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginiana), moose (Alces alces), black bear (Ursus americanus), snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus), coyote (Canis latrans), hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus), red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), yellow rumped warbler (Dendroica coronata), spruce grouse (Dendragapus canadensis), squirrels and a variety of small mammals including the southern red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi) and weasel species (Mustela spp.). Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of lacustrine (lake) sand and gravel. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Cambrian Munising Formation and the Precrambrian Jacobsville Sandstone subcrop below the Glacial Drift. The Jacobsville has been used as a building stone in the past. There are no gravel pits in the area, and potential appears to be limited. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: County Road 410 is the west and north boundary of compartment and access into compartment is from two-tracks off of the county road. Survey Needs: None needed at this time. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: This area does not have any state forest campgrounds but there are areas, favored by hunters, to camp. There is a snowmobile trail and an ORV trail that run through the compartment. Fire Protection: The compartment is in the Two Hearted Zone Dispatch Area Plan. Large fire runs are possible because of the continuous pine stands and long response time. Upland sand soil types and open Pine stands allow good access with wheeled heavy equipment. Planted 1940. ORV Trail. Other Species: Balsam Fir, Birch, Aspen. Cut all Merchantable Jack Pine, Balsam Fir, and Hardwoods. This is mostly Jack Pine but there are areas where the Red Pine will need to be thinned. This area is having some death. Possible JPBW and needs to go before it all dies. Leave large white birch. ***Stand harvested as "Canoe Camp Pine Mix" (009-03-01). Completed 07/14/05. FTP = C42-592. Scarification yet to be completed as of 09/13/05. Some red pine residual left. Check in 2007. If scarification is unsuccessful, then plant. ****2008-For the Red Pine Project, this stand will be harvested via shelterwood/seed tree treatment, followed by scarification for natural red pine regeneration. Stand is currently an R5/R6 with open areas of R4. Residual red pine BA needs to be lowered to promote better natural red pine regeneration. Red pine BA avg of 50 sq ft, ranging from 30-90 sq ft. Management objective is red pine. Some regeneration of jack pine and scattered miscellaneous species mixed in with the red pine regeneration will also be acceptable.
Planted in1940. Sale #5-93 but this looks like it was too small and so it was stayed out of. Lots of pulp trees in here, unlike the rest of the area that was treated. ****2007-For the Red Pine Project, this stand will be harvested via shelterwood/seed tree treatment, followed by scarification for natural red pine regeneration. Management objective is red pine. Some regeneration of jack pine and scattered miscellaneous species mixed in with the red pine regeneration will also be acceptable.
Sale #5-93 (unit 2), Scarified in 1998. Other Sp: Maple, Aspen, and Birch. More maple and aspen regen in the open areas. FTP#42-424: scarification completed 4/98 (also includes stands 34,36,37,39). Stocking survey completed 5/21/2003 - 159 trees per acre.
