“HOPE is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, And sings the

tune without the words, And never stops at all.”

-Emily Dickinson

Zoya Dickins MillerFounder and Chairman of the Board

Thirty-seven years ago Zoya Dickens Miller had a dream that has been realized through the help of thousands of volunteers and much com-munity support. The dream was to help prevent prema-ture births in Colorado as well as improve the lives of babies who were born prematurely. We have watched Newborn

Hope go through many changes over the years, but the most significant is that our founder has moved to Mexico. In the best interest of Newborn Hope, Zoya formed an executive commit-tee made up of the 3 of us. We are to act on behalf of her to provide leadership, encouragement and vision for the organiza-tion she loves.

We see many committed volunteers working hard to raise mon-ey and tell the story of Newborn Hope. Because of our many volunteers we have a statewide presence and are supporting programs all over Colorado. Zoya called each volunteer the lifeblood of Newborn Hope. We have a choice. We can be-moan the loss of Zoya’s presence or we can continue to work hard to raise money to distribute to our statewide programs and make Zoya proud.

Zoya worked tirelessly to address issues of prematurity and make a difference in the lives of babies in Colorado. We ap-preciate the volunteers and members of the community who continue to work toward her goals and keep her dream alive. We want to thank each of you for giving of yourself! We thank each of you for your wonderful commitment because you do make a difference.

With hope,Cindy Fowler, Kappy Stewart, and Brenda Whitlock

E V E N T SPuebloPueblo’s Newborn Hope event in 2010 was a special “baby shower” featuring Ashley and Jorydon, twin daughters of Beth and Matt Whitley. Ashley and Jorydon were high risk because they were sharing the same sac in the uterus. They were born at 32 weeks at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs and returned home to Parkview Hospital in Pueblo at 36 weeks. Birth announcements of these special girls were mailed by the Pueblo Committee asking for monies to help other babies like Ashley and Jorydon. Over $3300 was raised to help support maternal, fetal and neonatal care for agen-cies throughout Colorado. Pueblo also received funds from the Cozzetta Golf Tournament. The tournament generously donated $4000 to Newborn Hope.

DenverOn Tuesday, May 4, 2010 Newborn Hope held a fundraising event at Canvas & Cocktails in Denver. Guests discovered their inner-Picasso at this fun night of wine, hors d’oeuvres, and artistic expression while raising money for Newborn Hope. No artistic experience was necessary and was an instructor-guided, low pressure recreational evening of painting. Attend-ees went home with their own unique painting. Light hors d’oeuvres and dessert were provided by the Denver Newborn Hope committee.

Colorado Springs - December 10, 2010Chaired by Sarah Ross and Chris Schneider, the 2010 Newborn Hope Luncheon and Fashion Show was held at The Broadmoor Hall. More than 700 guests attended the 38th annual event titled “The Gift of Hope”. Guests were introduced to a new venue as they entered the Broadmoor Hall and perused the Penrose St. Francis Medical Center’s Silent Auction tables, participated in the Ornament Traditions, and had the opportunity to purchase special Mark Roberts Fairies. The luncheon highlights included the introduction of the 2010 feature family, the Kraft’s. Followed by the heartfelt story present-ed by Memorial Health System’s, Doctor Stephanie Martin, who delivered Cameron Kraft. She also spoke regarding the important contributions Newborn Hope makes every year to the welfare of premature babies in our state. Then Newborn Hope honored some of our local “gifts” as previous premature babies walked down the runway as the audience appreci-ated their life journey. After a delicious lunch provided by the Broadmoor, an exciting Fashion show wowed the crowd. Exquisite fashions were provided by local retailers: Kirk & Hill, Macy’s, Regina’s Boutique, The Shops at the Broadmoor, Ellie K Boutique, David’s Bridal, Gap, Men’s Warehouse, Mountain Moppets, White House Black Market, and William Kurtz, Ltd.. With the help of our presenting sponsors, The Broadmoor, KKTV 11 News, The Gazette, and Memorial Health System, more than $55,000 was granted to worthy recipients throughout the state of Colorado to help support maternal, fetal and neonatal care programs. Newborn Hope, once again, helped give the gift of hope to many families in the state of Colorado.

On behalf of the Newborn Hope Board of Directors, I want to take the oppor-tunity to reflect on our past year, and to appreciate our supporters, volunteers and grant recipients. Each of you truly plays an important role in the success of NBH each and every day. Side-by-side we are filling critical needs in our community. Thank you for your constant enthusiasm and dedication to our mission. You have helped NBH realize its position as an organization in the state of Colorado to help prevent prematurity. We are making a difference in the lives of babies and giving them the gift of a healthier start to life. I have no doubt the success of our organization is the result of our many dedicated volunteers working together

toward the daily fulfillment of the NBH mission. The 2010 Fashion Show and Luncheon was a great success, as was the “Virtual Baby Shower” held in Pueb-lo.

As we look to 2011, the Newborn Hope Board of Directors is looking forward to; working with our new grant writer, a new website launch, developing a five year strategic plan and supporting our fund-raising events. We have an outstanding group of women serving on our Ex-ecutive Council, Board of Directors and Event Committees.

Thank you to all of those who care so much about Newborn Hope, Inc. and the babies of Colorado!

The Bedrest Task Force, an in-house Newborn Hope project, is in its eighth year of providing

support to at-risk pregnant mothers and their families. Founders and co-chairs Dana Hollen-

bach and Amy Tracy, both bedrest survivors, deliver “Bags of Hope” to Memorial Hospital and

Penrose-St. Francis Hospital each month. These gift bags contain educational materials on high-

risk pregnancy topics, entertainment items, and toiletries. Activity carts and closets are also kept

well-stocked with craft items, movies, puzzles, and items for visiting siblings. This year the New-

born Hope Bedrest Task Force purchased portable blood pressure monitors to loan to moms on

bedrest at home. We also supplied taxi vouchers for pregnant women who did not have trans-

portation to and from their doctors’ appointments. For those families from rural communities and

whose husbands are deployed, telephone cards were distributed. Thanks to a generous grant

from The Nutrition Camp School, the lending library grew with purchases of books and videos, in

Spanish and English, on nutritional topics.

C O L O R A D O S P R I N G S ’ F E A T U R E F A M I L YThe Kraft Family

Erica and Justin Kraft and their 8 month old son, Cameron, Newborn Hope’s 2010 feature family, have a dramatic story of hope to tell….

After having no issues with their first preg-nancy and with their daughter, Larissa, turning 3 at the time of their second preg-nancy with Cameron, the Krafts had no in-dication or warning of what was to come with their second pregnancy.

At just 7 weeks, their doctor thought heavy bleeding was a sign of miscarriage, but after several tests and an ultra-sound it looked like the pregnancy would remain viable, but Erica would be labeled “high risk”.

Over the next few weeks things seemed to be moving right along, but at 15 weeks, Erica started bleeding again. However, once again, after all the standard tests and an ultrasound, the cause of the bleeding was still a mystery. It appeared the baby was still healthy; but Erica was soon diagnosed with pre-term labor. The dreaded words “bed rest” turned her life inactive until she was 19 weeks, when the doctor felt she could come off bed rest as contractions and bleeding had subsided for 4 weeks.

However just one week later, it was discov-ered that Erica was having con-tractions again and her cervix had shortened so she was checked into the long term wom-en’s floor of the hospital. After 2 weeks in the hospital, Erica was erroneously diagnosed with an infection in the placenta and given the op-

tion to terminate the pregnancy. Luckily, she refused because after retests, 5 days later, no infection was found. At the 24 week milestone of a 50/50 chance of survival for Cameron and hav-ing no more preterm labor symptoms, Erica was sent home to continue bed rest. The very next week, Erica’s water broke and she was put back in the hospital where Cameron was deliv-

ered a few days later on September 30th at 25 weeks and 3 days gestation. He was born 1lb 13 oz, and was imme-diately rushed to the Memorial Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He would stay there for the next 11 weeks!

After a natural delivery the doctor tried to deliver the pla-centa and Erica started hemorrhaging. After 2 emergency surgeries to save Erica’s life, and 3 resuscitations, the doc-tors discovered the pregnancy issues were caused by a condition called Placenta Accretia, where the placenta at-taches itself too deep in the uterine wall making it difficult to separate after delivery.

Cameron had a long road to recovery as his lungs were severely underdeveloped even with steroids prior to birth and surfactant after delivery he still had to be on a breath-ing tube. Cam-eron never had a need for surgery and amazed the doctors and nurs-es when at 36 weeks he was eat-ing from a bottle, weighing 4lbs and doing well enough to come home just in time for Christ-mas. They said he was a miracle as babies born at his size and gestation almost never go home with healthy eyes, ears and no long term issues.
