Now to the God who can do so many awe-inspiring

things, immeasurable things, things greater than we

ever could ask or imagine through the power at work in

us. Ephesians 3:20 (The Voice)

Greater Things!

DHQ Newsletter: Issue 3 19 February 2014

GREATER TRUST Isaiah 33:14-16

14 The sinners in Zion are terrified;

trembling grips the godless: “Who of us

can dwell with the consuming fire? Who

of us can dwell with everlasting

burning?” 15

Those who walk right-

eously and speak what is right,

who reject gain from extortion

and keep their hands from accepting

bribes, who stop their ears against plots

of murder and shut their eyes against

contemplating evil— 16

they are the ones

who will dwell on the heights,

whose refuge will be the mountain

fortress. Their bread will be supplied,

and water will not fail them.

In these days of challenge for The

Salvation Army and us as leaders, two

questions came to my mind during a

time of devotions:

Who can stand up under the

purification process of God?

Who can remain unchanged through

the fire of God?

These are the questions that Isaiah

asks and then answers. He lays out a

list of traits for the kind of people

who can stand in a crisis. Think about

his description:

1. Integrity : The leader’s life and

words match (v15)

2. Justice: The leader rejects

dishonest gain (v15)

3. Convictions: The leader’s

values won’t allow him or her

to accept bribes (v15)

4. Positive Focus: The leader

refuses to dwell on destructive

issues (v15)

5. Pure: The leader disciplines his

or her mind to remain clean and

pure (v15)

6. Secure: The leader is firm,

stable in his or her identity and

source of strength (v16)

Characteristics like these earn the

trust of others, and create an

environment for God to do His

“Greater Things” in us and The

Salvation Army.

As we journey together in ministry,

may you know each day God’s love

and blessings abundant.

SELF-DENIAL APPEAL COMMENCES THIS SUNDAY

The theme for this year’s appeal is

‘Planting Seeds of Hope’.

We bring you some amazing stories

from Tanzania, China, Bolivia and

Bangladesh.

After our introductory week, our first

story is from Tanzania, where we hear

Enesia Bandi’s story. Enesia has been

helped by the Salvation Army’s

community based micro credit

program (SAMIDE).

Our second story takes us to China,

and will be the first time a story from

there has been featured in a Self-

Denial series. Here, we will see how a

bio gas project will help to improve

the lives of Wang Zhong and his

family.

Then, we hear from Miriam, a nurse

at Harry Williams Hospital in Bolivia.

The Harry Williams Hospital has been

built from Self Denial Funding.

In our final story, we hear about the

amazing work that is helping to

transform Alomin’s life and other

deaf children as they attend a

Salvation Army school in

Bangladesh.

Our thanks also go to Gemma Gray, a

Salvationist from Ryde Corps, who

composed and wrote the song ‘Hope

is Rising’ for the Altar Service.

You will also find some great

resources for children, as they look at

the same countries and have their own

workbook and DVD’s series.

We trust that you will find this

material helpful and you will be

encouraged and challenged by the

stories that you will see as well as the

devotional material you use over the

coming weeks.

Finally, and most importantly, we ask

that you would promote this appeal

and encourage your people to

prayerfully consider a generous gift to

this year’s Self Denial Appeal.

MANUS ISLAND RIOTS

I’m sure by now many of you have

heard about the riot that took place at

the Manus Island detention facility.

I ask you all to join me in prayer for

the current situation on Manus Island.

The recent riot on Manus Island has

left one asylum seeker deceased and

many others injured.

I can confirm that all Salvation Army

staff working on Manus Island are

safe and free from harm; most had left

the facility before the riot started.

Please pray for their continued safety

as they serve those seeking asylum.

Please pray for the family and friends

of the deceased person. While grief is

always difficult there are additional

hardships to face when the process

takes place in detention.

Please pray for the Manus Island staff

and asylum seekers who have been

injured. Pray that God’s healing will

be poured out on them and they will

recover quickly.

While The Salvation Army’s contract

to supply humanitarian assistance on

Manus Island will conclude at the end

of February 2014, I ask that your

prayers continue long into the future

for both detainees and staff on Manus

and Nauru Islands.

Thank you for your support and

prayers.
