S ince directing the gritty bio-pic ‘Chopper’ in 2000, Aussie Andrew Dominik has been a little less than prolifi c with just one
fi lm, ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’ to his name.
His latest, ‘Killing Them Softly’ is proof positive that you can’t rush quality.
The story revolves around a pair of small time hoods (Scott McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn in a bravura performance) who rob up a Mafi a-protected card game which essentially causes the local criminal economy to collapse.
Enter brooding enforcer Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt), who is hired to track down the overseer of the card game, Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta) and restore order. Why? Because someone has to pay, that’s why.
Set amid the backdrop of the 2008 presidential elections and fi nancial fi asco, one could argue that ‘Killing Them Softly’ is a rather ham-fi sted allegory, but thanks to some masterful direction from Dominik and a brilliant ensemble cast – Pitt, Liotta, James Gandolfi ni, Richard Jenkins and Sam Shepard – it’s hardly an issue.
F uzzed-up dream pop is the order of the day on ‘Melody’s Echo Chamber’ – the solo project of French chanteuse Melody Prochet
(The Narcoleptic Dancers, My Bee’s Garden).
Enlisting Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker to produce the album, the result is an enthralling mix of ‘so-Frenchy’ ‘60s pop melodies that recall Laetitia Sadier’s Stereolab and the swirling, lurching psychedelia that has made Tame Impala such a hot ticket item.
The album’s strongest moments come when this juxtaposition is most evident, on tracks such as ‘I’ll Follow You’ which couples a sweetly meandering melody with more fuzz than you can poke a stick at.
If the likes of Stereolab, The Cocteau Twins, coupled with the “wall of sound” shoegaze trippiness of bands like My Bloody Valentine are your bag, you’re going to love this.

N ever one to have too many tickets on himself, director Ridley Scott claimed he was saving the sci-fi genre with
‘Prometheus’. Rather than deliver a revelatory opus, the man who brought us such classics as ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Alien’ is at the helm of a lurching, clunky and at times confusing fi lm.
The story revolves around a team of scientists traveling through the universe on the spaceship Prometheus searching for alien life forms. The team soon become stranded in a hostile alien world where a struggle for not only their lives but the lives of all mankind hang in the balance.
The fi lm is still replete with the same jaw dropping cinematography and special effects that we’ve come to expect from Scott’s fi lm, yet an overarching yet ill-explained theme of man’s origins and our place in the universe, and poor character development really let this fi lm down.
Also, it’s association with the ‘Alien’ franchise is tenuous at best with any references to that universe feeling tacked on.

outfi t Dexys Midnight Runners are back with a new album and a special trip down under, to boot!
Now known simply as Dexys, Kevin Rowland and co are back with a vengeance with one rip-snorter of a new album, ‘One Day I’m Going To Soar’ that should make for one pretty awesome live experience.
“We’ll wear great clothes and make soulful music.”
That was the promise Kevin Rowland made to the fi rst line-up of Dexys Midnight Runners when he formed the group in 1978.
The pledge held true through their audacious and powerful live performances, seven top 20 (including the number ones ‘Geno’ and ‘Come On Eileen’) and the landmark albums ‘Searching For The Young Soul Rebels’, ‘Too-Rye-Ay’ and ‘Don’t Stand Me Down’.
In 1986, the life of Dexys Midnight Runners was done. For 27 years, millions of fans worldwide thought they’d never see the band play live again, let alone release new music. But lo and behold, the young soul rebels are back and you certainly don’t want to miss this.

I t seems that the beardless are living on borrowed time. With Mayan, Incan, Egyptian and Internet soothsayers predicting a 2012
apocalypse, you can now add a much more chilling prophecy to the list – on December 21 this year, the world will end for people without beards – and you can thank Adelaide outfi t, The Beards for bringing it to our attention.
“Our guitarist was rifl ing through his neighbour’s garbage and he stumbled upon these ancient prophecies, which was quite convenient as we were looking for a theme for the tour,” bass player Nathaniel Beard told TE.
“Although, the tour is more of a community service for the betterment of bearded people everywhere.”
If there’s one thing The Beards love it’s beards, with all of their songs glorifying the facial adornment and you only have to glance at the title of their latest album ‘Having A Beard Is The New Not Having A Beard’ to get the idea.
“For us personally, our new record is not only the best album we’ve ever done, it’s the best CD ever made,” Beard said.
“That said, we only ever listen to songs about beards so we don’t really know what’s out there.
“It’s a proven fact that everything sounds better with a beard.
“People with beards also have heightened senses and abilities such as the ability to run faster, so why would you not want a beard?”
The current community service/tour will bring The Beards to Newcastle and Beard said he was pleased with the take-up of facial hair in the region.
“Newcastle has always had a great beard scene, right from the get-go and there are also a lot of dormant beards in Newcastle just waiting to happen,” he said.
“Although, no offence, but Newcastle is also home of the employment beard – the kind of beard just respectable enough to wear to work, and we want them in full effect.
“There are some beards that are absolutely out of the question. The fl avour saver, for example, is abhorrent, as is the moustache and those pencil-thin Craig David jobs.”

A native Glaswegian, John Swan has been on the Australian music scene since he was 14-years-old.
He has become part of this country’s musical backbone playing fi rst as a drummer, then as a singer with many of Australia’s top rock and roll outfi ts.
In 1978 he released his fi rst album ‘Into The Night’ and his fi rst major chart success was a brilliant rendition of Tim Hardin’s ‘If I Were A Carpenter’.
In 1985, Party Boy Paul Christie was considering a new front man and he needed, by his admission, “the best rock ‘n’ roll voice in the country”. John Swan was asked and he accepted.
Along came the Party Boys’ self titled album which went number one in three weeks thanks to the success of the number one single ‘He’s Gonna Step On You Again’ and two top 10 hits ‘Hold Your Head Up’ and ‘Gloria’.
In 2000, John came off the road to get sober after too many years of hard partying. A long distance recording project with Australian producer Mark Moffatt, now based in Nashville, soon turned into a full blown album, ‘Have A Little Faith’.

I t may’ve been a long time between drinks – three years between their debut LP ‘Concrete Jungle’ and latest long player ‘Pocket Full of
Dreams’ – for Melbourne hip-hop duo Diafrix, but that’s not to say the pair have been resting on their laurels.
“We have spent a bit of time touring overseas and quite a few months working on the album, so we have been keeping very busy. It’s also a very exciting time for us with the album out
now – we both just can’t wait to get out there and give people a taste of the new songs,” rapper and vocalist Momo told TE.
The new album, a blistering collection of soaring hooks features an array of guests, from the likes of Daniel Merriwether to 360 as well as producers
like Wax Motif and Styalz Fuego, and Momo said there was never a sense of too many cooks spoiling the musical broth.
“There was a few of us who had worked together before so it was actually pretty chilled,” he said.
“We were really fortunate with how everything came together – it all just seemed to happen naturally.”
And hip-hip is something that defi nitely comes naturally to Diafrix. Forming in 2003, the pair – Momo and MC Azmarino, who both came to Australia as refugees from the Comoros Islands and Eritrea respectively – met at a hip-hop workshop in Footscray and haven’t looked back since.
The pair got both industry and punters’ tongues wagging with their debut album which earned the band the best homegrown new talent award in The Age newspaper.
The album was a statement of intent for Diafrix with themes of giving a voice to the disenfranchised – something which Momo said continues on ‘Pocket Full of Dreams’.
“Our music is really about universal struggles and our aim is to inspire people with our music – and we hope we can do that with the new album,” Momo said.
Anyone who has seen Diafrix on stage will attest to the fact that they are just as joyous and uplifting live as they are on record and Momo assured Newcastle fans that they could expect something special when they hit town next weekend.
“We give 100 per cent at all of our shows and it will be no different in Newcastle,” he said.
“Newcastle fans always give a great vibe and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of hands in the air.”

I f it’s the sound of the big-bands that gets your feet tapping, then you can rejoice as the Ultra Swing Lounge will be swinging by the Civic
Theatre for three shows this month.Newcastle’s own Daniel Stoddart
and Steve Hudson and Tamworth-born Rob McDougall are all accomplished performers and will add their own charismatic touch to the classic big-band swing numbers. Since last taking to the Civic stage last year, the boys have been busy perfecting their craft with various theatrical pursuits. McDougall was recently awarded a three-week scholarship to study on Broadway and some of his performance numbers are the original scores learnt while in New York. Stoddart is the principal of his own successful drama school and Hudson is a specialist school teacher who also performs in a few local bands and duos around the Newcastle traps.
The three boys will be accompanied by the Ultra Swing Big Band under the direction of musical director Greg Paterson. They will also be joined on stage by dancers Aric Yegudkin, Masha Belash, Csaba Szirmai and Newcastle’s
Jessica Prince. These dancers have appeared on television’s hit dance show ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and will add a sultry fl avour to the show with their hot ballroom moves.
The four-show season features a new set design, the exciting elements of lighting, glamorous costuming and a new song list which will enthral followers of the Ultra Swing Lounge and engage a new audience of all ages.
Executive producer and director Phil Collins, said audiences can expect to see a highly-regarded professional show which will be worthy of performing on any international stage.
“Ultra Swing Lounge is a classy production which pays tribute to the wonderful swing era combining the classics as well contemporary numbers,” he said.
The three stars have developed a special chemistry and will revive memories for those who grew up listening to the timeless 30s and 40s melodies and also introduce this fabulous music to a new generation of music lovers.
Ultra Swing Lounge will be on at the Civic Theatre on Thursday, October
26, Friday, October 27 and two performances at 2pm and 8pm on Saturday, October 28.

S ince taking out the Youth Rockin’ The Black Dog band competition last year, Newcastle four piece Carousel
haven’t looked back.It’s been quite a prolifi c 2012, thus
far, with the band releasing one EP, ‘Lovers and Liars’, earlier this year as well as snaring a coveted slot at the Fat as Butter festival, playing alongside the
likes of Good Charlotte, Grinspoon and 360.
“2012 has been incredible,” front man/guitarist Cameron Hughes told TE.
“We released our debut EP, which was pretty exciting, and we were also fortunate enough to play at Fat as Butter, after winning the Youth Rockin’ The Black Dog competition, which was just amazing.”
Not ones to rest on their laurels, Hughes, Nick Shepherd (lead guitar) and brothers Sam (drums) and Liam (bass) Bonomini, are on the cusp of
releasing their second EP, ‘Stars In Your Eyes’. Hughes said while the driving and ‘tighter-than-a-tourniquet’ pop-rock of the fi rst EP would still be evident, the boys have taken a much more considered approach on the sophomore release.
“Lyrically, the new EP will be a lot different and the music itself will be a lot more mature,” he said.
“I guess we wanted to experiment a bit more with our sound and what we were capable of.”
For ‘Stars in Your Eyes’, Carousel enlisted the services of Newcastle muso/producer Gareth Hudson and his Hazy Cosmic Jive studio and Hughes said the multi award-winning producer brought a sense of cohesion to proceedings.
“Gareth is a brilliant producer,” he said.
“He was able to turn a bunch of good songs into a bunch of great songs. We had all the songs written before we went into the studio, but Gareth came in with little suggestions and tweaks that really made the songs work.”
Anyone who has seen Carousel live will attest to the fact that this is one band that thrives on stage and Hughes said the band couldn’t wait to give punters a taste of their new crop of
tracks when they release the EP at the Cambridge.
“We are a band that prides ourselves on really high-energy sets – we always give one hundred per cent on stage and we usually fi nish our sets dripping in sweat,” he said
“We’re really looking forward to a big one at the Cambridge.”
Carousel will be launching ‘Stars In Your Eyes’ at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday, October 20.

Reggae Got Soul has become quite a popular fi xture at The Great Northern’s Merchant Tiki Bar, and it’s not hard to see why.
This is the sound of black America as it changed from blues via rock and roll into soul. These exciting sounds wafted across the Gulf of Mexico and over Cuba to Jamaica, where the people tuned in their wireless, and sound systems pumped them out at their dances, shaping Jamaican music as we know it. From ska in the early 1960s, through rocksteady and into the reggae chartbusters that topped the Jamaican and UK charts in 1970, Reggae Got Soul introduces a whole new audience to the idea that the old music can be as exciting as the new.

Playing mostly modern music she is able to take any song and make it suit her as a performer from up-beat pop songs to the classic soothing melodies we are all familiar with.
Kylie is originally from Dubbo, NSW and is a country girl at heart. She moved to Newcastle in early 2009 to attend Hunter School of Performing Arts. It was here she was appointed the lead vocalist for their stage band and hasn’t looked back since.

With the smell of paprika and saffron hanging in the air, courtesy of the weekly paella cook up on the bistro deck overlooking the waves of Caves Beach, my dining partner and I opt to sample the banquet in the hotel’s newly opened tapas lounge – a six course selection of some of the signature dishes from the menu.
The décor in the lounge is slick and sophisticated but inviting, with a relaxed beach house feel and just enough hints of shells and sand to
remind you of the nearby coastline without being too obvious.
We are told that the chef’s philosophy was authentic Spanish cuisine with a fun twist.
The banquet delivers this in spades – delicious, fresh, seasonal produce, creatively presented, course after course.
We begin with grilled fl atbread, served with house-smoked sweet tomato paste, garlic and basil.
Next comes Spanish manchego cheese with quince paste served on crispy sourdough bread, wrapped in Jamón serrano ham, a perfect combination of sweet and salty fl avours and textures and a real highlight of the meal.

A fter cutting his teeth in rock outfi ts Sparrows and Rushcutter, Melbourne singer-songwriter Tim Wheatley, decided to branch out on his own under the
moniker of Crooked Saint, and he hasn’t looked back since.
In the past 18 months, Crooked Saint has released two independent EPs, a double A-side, undertaken two lengthy Australian tours as well as two stints in California – the most recent including slots at the iconic Whiskey Au Go Go and Hotel Café and a residency at the House of Blues.
So, has Wheatley had any time to scratch himself over the past 18 months?
“It has been pretty busy of late, but that’s the way I like it,” he told TE.
“I don’t think I’m really of sound mind because I really do start to go crazy if I’m not doing something – it’s kind of like ADD and ODC rolled into one and, when I’m bored, I can be quite painful to be around.”
Wheatley, who cites the likes of 70’s West Coast heroes Jackson Browne and The Eagles as early infl uences, said while his stints Stateside may not have impacted on his distinct blues rock/country sound, it did give him the inspiration to work harder at his craft.
“Playing at the likes of The Whiskey and House Of Blues was just fantastic – both of those places had been on my gig bucket list for ages,” he said.
“Also, I spent a bit of time in the Hotel Café as well – I actually got to see Paul Kelly play there to, like, thirty people which was pretty humbling.
“Although I’d say my time there didn’t shape how I write my music it did shift me into another gear in terms of working
harder on the songs.”Crooked Saint’s latest effort, the double A-
side ‘Hot and Heavy’ / ‘Outta Sight, Outta Mind’ represents another change in the life of Crooked Saint, with Wheatley bringing in more of a solid band line up for the sessions.
“It wasn’t really that weird recording with the band because we had worked the songs up live a lot and, in fact, during those sessions I was hearing a lot of things for the fi rst time and they really did fi ll me with a great deal of confi dence in what I’m doing,” he said.
It seems the next logical step for Wheatley to take the plunge and release a long player, but he said, while it’s something he can defi nitely foresee down the track, it’s something that shouldn’t be rushed.
“There are plans to get a record happening but I’m not too keen to rush it,” he said.
“It’s a really exciting prospect but also really daunting as a fi rst album really is a fi rst impression so it’s something to be taken pretty seriously.”

A fter a rather impressive turn at the recent Fat as Butter festival, Menengle’s favourite sons The Rubens have
decided to add a Newcastle date to their seemingly ever expanding national tour.
“Yeah we’re really looking forward to getting back to Newcastle – Fat As Butter was a great festival and we can’t wait to get back to Newcastle and go
one better,” frontman Sam Margin told TE.
It was only a short 12 months ago that the three brothers Sam, Zaac and Elliot Margin, along with good mate Scott Baldwin uploaded their bedroom demo of ‘Lay it Down’ to the Triple J Unearthed website and Margin said none of them were prepared for the eventual storm the song would create.
“We were all totally surprised,” he said.
“None of us ever thought ‘Lay It Down’ would take off as much as it did – we always thought it would be [new
single] ‘My Gun’.”In a case of going from strength
to strength, it wasn’t long before the Rubens were headed over to the States to record their ‘beyond-their-years’ debut in New York with renowned producer David Khane (The Strokes, Lana Del Ray, Paul McCartney).
“We chose David because he really is a brilliant pop producer,” Margin said.
“We have always said that we love Triple J and everything that it stands for but we also really want to cross over into commercial radio so we felt we needed a producer that could manage a bigger sound out of us, and I think he achieved it.”
It seems the Australian record buying public does too, with the album debuting at number three on the ARIA charts just under such acts as P!nk and The Killers.
“We still can’t believe it,” he said.“The day before the charts were
announced, our management said a top 10 spot would be great, so to hit the charts at number three was just

W hen it comes to singers of torch songs, few do it better than the Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter
Melissa Manchester.While her name may not be household,
her songs, such as her brilliantly emotive version of the Peter Allen and Carol Bayer Sager-penned ‘Don’t Cry out Loud’, ‘Whenever I Call You Friend’, and ‘Through The Eyes Of Love’, certainly are as Novocastrians are sure to fi nd out when she hits Newcastle this month as part of her eight-date Australian tour.
“I’m absolutely beside myself about coming to Australia,” she told TE down the line from Los Angeles.
“It’s actually really embarrassing that I’ve never been down there before – I just can’t wait.”
Manchester, who was already a published poet at age 15, said her career began after snagging a staff writing job at Chappel Music while concurrently performing as a solo singer-pianist in the clubs of Greenwich Village. It was while working in the New York jingle singing circuit, that she met Barry Manilow and her career really started to take shape.
“I knew Barry quite well because we were both jingle singers,” she said.
“Anyway, Bette Midler was doing her show at the Continental Bath House in the Village and she was preparing for her fi rst big concert at Carnegie Hall with Barry as her musical director.
“I asked her if she’d considered using backup singers and she hadn’t, so she essentially created the Harlettes and I was Toots in the middle for six months which was an amazing time – she truly is a phenomenal performer.”
Also, in her formative years, while studying at New York University, she was given invaluable guidance by yet another musical heavy hitter – Paul Simon.
“Paul was teaching a songwriting masterclass at NYU which seems pretty unbelievable now, but that’s just what New York was like at the time,” she said.
“We’d come in every week with a new song, Paul did too, and he would deconstruct everything – it was an amazing experience.”
While Manchester made quite a name for herself in the adult contemporary torch song genre her Grammy award, which she won in 1982, came from an unlikely source – the ridiculously catchy disco hit ‘You Should Hear How She Talks About You’.
“I really was known mostly as a ballad singer up to that point and when I was fi rst presented with the song, I didn’t really know what to make of it, but it did basically become the number one song in workout rooms and gyms all across America,” she laughed.
