When his two sons, Harold andRalph, returned from World War I,he turned the operations of thecompany over to them. Fletcherlived to see a third generation ofFletchers running the companybefore his death in 1956.

Stone from the quarry was usedto build his magnificent home, which was finished in 1912 andalso his mausoleum.

The Fletcher home, calledGreyledge, still stands near thequarry and is now used as officeand drafting space.

A Desirable CommodityAccording to Fletcher CEO and

Chairman Victor Castellani, gran-ite has been a desirable commodi-ty since the town was settled.Starting in the 17th century, areagranite was hewn from giant boul-ders and used for hearthstones, thresholds, steps and, most notably, miles of stone walls still found sur-rounding fields that once belongedto farmsteads.

Water power was harnessed to

run the grist and saw mills in thelate 17th century, when granite wasin great demand to build the damsthat held the water to make grind-ing wheels that processed grain.By the 1880s, when FletcherGranite was founded, the granitebusiness was well established inthe Chelmsford area.

Although most quarries shut

down during both World Wars,Fletcher stayed open, providingballast for ships, in addition to itsusual product output.

The main quarry is, and alwayshas been, based in Westford, as isthe company’s headquarters.Fletcher Granite also has quarrieslocated in Maine and NewHampshire.

Eleven Kinds of StoneFletcher Granite is a full- service

quarrier and fabricator. Today, thecompany extracts 11 types of stonefrom 10 separate quarries. It alsohas a large fabrication plant thatships finished stone productsthroughout the United States andthe world.

Fletcher has pioneered many

firsts, including the first quarrywire saw and circle guillotine forproducing radius curbing. Otherinnovations include the develop-ment of various saws and splittersto produce curb and inlets, and thedevelopment of a high pressure, environmentally safe water jet forquarry block extraction. In 2004, amulti-diamond wire quarry wasdeveloped for the production ofcurbing slab.

“Fletcher Granite has developedunique technology for the produc-tion of granite curbing slab feed-stock and quarry blocks directly inthe quarry using an in-quarrymulti-diamond wire saw with sixwires designed, developed and

fabricated in-house. This apparatusreplaces a 10 wire multi-wire appa-ratus using twisted wire and siliconcarbide which the company haddeveloped and used for more than50 years,” said Castellani.

Using the multi-diamond wiresaw technology large primaryblocks of granite, typically 80 ft.(24.3 m) high, and more than 120ft. (36.5 m) wide are developed inthe quarry by cutting and quarryingout large channels, 12 to 16 ft. (3.6to 4.8 m) wide on either side of theprimary block. Pull through dia-mond wire saws are used to sawboth sides of the channel.

Two holes are drilled vertically,12 to 16 ft. apart, 60 to 80 ft. (18 to24 m) back from the face of thegranite block and interceptingholes are drilled horizontally at thebottom of the 80-ft.-high block.Diamond wires are then fishedthrough the holes and are run bypullback single wire diamond sawscutting both sides of the channel. Athird cut is made diagonally acrossthe channel to facilitate quarryingout the material which is done pri-marily using drilling and splittingin a traditional manner.

“Once the 12-to-16-foot widechannels are quarried out on bothsides of the large primary block, the multi-diamond wire saw appa-ratus with six wires is erected in thechannels on either side of the pri-mary block,” added Castellani.

This apparatus then makes sixwire cuts 12 to 20 in. (30 to 50 cm)apart and occasionally — depend-ing upon need for quarry blocks —up to 6 ft. (1,8 m) apart, throughthe entire 80-ft. high, 120-ft. wideprimary block.

“This usually tales ten to twelvetwenty-four hour days,” Castellaniexplained.

After the first six wire cut, themulti-diamond wire saw apparatusis moved over to make the nextseries of cuts in the primary whilethe extraction crew splits the sawnmaterial into 10-ft. (3 m) wide, upto 12-ft. (3.6 m) long slabs. Holesare drilled in the top of the slabsand lifting pins are inserted so thatcranes can lift the slabs out.

The slabs and blocks are loadedonto flat bed rails cars for the half-mile trip to Fletcher Granite’s millfor processing into curb and

dimensional stone components forbuilding, parks, bridges and otherprojects. Granite quarry blocksalso are sold and shipped to otherfabricators both the northeast andaround the world.

All Year RoundThe quarry can operate year

round, and since the company fab-ricates so many products, evencobblestones, there is very littlewaste. Blocks are processed in sev-eral ways; beyond the wiredprocess described above, blocksalso can be cut on large disc sawsfrom Park Industries, which fea-ture blades as large as 3.2 yds. (3m).

For polishing, the company usesa Thibaut T502 automatic bed pol-isher from France, which is capa-ble of polishing several large flatstone slabs at once.

Fletcher Granite has been usedfor many projects locally as well asglobally. Chelmsford Granite, pur-portedly from a site close to where

the present day Fletcher quarry issituated, also was used to build thehistoric Quincy Market in down-town Boston.

The columns for Quincy Marketwere hauled to a landing inChelmsford by 22 yokes of oxen, loaded onto a barge and sent intoBoston. In the early 1880s, CharlesBulfinch, a noted architect of thattime, chose Chelmsford Greygranite to build University Hall atHarvard University.

Tremendous ProjectHistory

Other notable Fletcher projectsinclude the Thurgood MarshallFederal Judiciary Building inWashington, D.C.; Nashua StreetPark in Boston, Mass.; East andWest Wings of the SmithsonianInstitute’s Museum of NaturalHistory in Washington, D.C.; theUnited States Military Academy’sEisenhower Hall, Jewish Chapel,MacArthur Hall, and Washington

Hall at West Point, N.Y.; theRobert F. Kennedy Memorial atArlington National Cemetery; andthe Museum of Modern Art inLuxembourg, among many others.

Fletcher Granite has been usedin a multitude of bridge projects aswell including the TheodoreRoosevelt Bridge in Arlington, Va.;the Newport Bridge in Newport,R.I.; the Saugatuck River Bridge inWestport, Conn.; and the SecondWoodrow Wilson Bridge inAlexandria, Va.

For architectural works, eachpiece is drawn and detailed by thecompany’s highly-specializeddrafting department, right down tothe “anchoring.”

But not everything continues tobe etched in stone. The ownershipof the company passed out of theFletcher family in 1985, after 104years of continuous operationswith a Fletcher at the helm. Thequarry was owned and operated byPioneer International headquar-tered in Sydney, Australia through1999, when a group of fourinvestors purchased the companyand still own it today.

Castellani said, “Our companymotto is, ‘Quality ThroughTradition.’ Our employees possessan expertise in ‘Old World’ crafts-

manship combined with FletcherGranite’s state of the art equip-ment; this knowledge allows themto fabricate a unique line of customproducts. Our reputation as aleader in the granite industry iswell established due to our superi-or work and customer satisfaction.

“We offer unmatched diversity— color and finish options includ-ing historical finishes, and innova-tive or traditional fabrication utiliz-ing a broad range of shapes andsizes,” added Castellani.

Fletcher Granite employs up to65 workers when things are rock-ing in the plant, during a goodeconomy. Most of these workershave 25 to 30 years in serviceexperience, usually all withFletcher.

“Our granite is specified inmany restoration projects as wellas sought by architects andbuilders for new ventures, such ascurbing, dimensional stone, bridgeand roadway, or landscape archi-tecture projects,” Castellani said.

Conn. Craftsman Wants toBuild Metal-Frame HomesBy Robert MillerTHE NEWS-TIMES OF DANBURY

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) Steven TimurLang can fashion wrought iron into roses, and hammer dense rectangles of layeredstainless steel into beautiful Damacusknives, the kind his Hungarian ancestorscould have carried on a wild boar hunt.

But his dream now is to build houses —specifically, metal-frame houses, anywherein the world.

“I will go to Afghanistan to build struc-tures for the American Army and the peopleof Afghanistan,” he said, noting that hisnamesake Timur Lang, known in the west-ern world as Tamerlane, once ruled there.

“I would like to ride in my ancestor’spath,” he said.

Lang’s idea isn’t pie in the sky. He spentfour years designing metal-frame homes inhis head, and another six years working on apatent for the design, manufacturing andconstruction of such homes, a patent the U.S.government granted him this year.

His blacksmith shop on Deerfield Avenueis a metal-frame construction he adapted forhis own use. He’s also built a model in north-ern Connecticut.

“In four and a half days, we built a10,000-square-foot, three-story A-frame,” hesaid.

The principles of the construction are suchthat he could mass produce and build muchsimpler structures quickly — for homes inHaiti or in Louisiana.

“They are termite-proof, fireproof, hurri-cane-proof,” he said. Anchored with shockabsorbers, they can be earthquake-proof aswell, he said.

“We have a prototype,” he said. “Wecould provide housing and jobs. Now I’mlooking for politicians to give us support andinvestors.”

Lang comes by his love of metal almostby blood. His father was a blacksmith inBudapest, and Lang grew up in his shop

there — working hot iron, fashioning shoesfor draught horses.

And while he went to a top-notch technol-ogy school in Budapest, learning design, metallurgy and welding, he said his love ofthe forge goes deep — to his ancestors, sit-ting around a fire in Hungary.

“When I work by myself makingDamascus knives, with no telephone, no oneto talk to, the fire mesmerizes me,” he said ofthe charcoal fire he still uses in his shop.

But the Hungary he grew up in was underCommunist rule.

“My family didn’t like the Communistsfor a tiny reason. Freedom,” he said.

In 1970, he escaped his homeland, cross-ing the border into Vienna. He took what helearned in military training with him andserved in an airborne division of the U.S.Army, parachuting into spots in Europe andCentral America.

When he built the A-frame in northernConnecticut, he used his fellow paratroopersas his construction crew.

“When you’re putting a 4-inch I-beam inplace three stories up, you can’t have some-one off the streets,” he said. “You need peo-ple who trust you and can work with you.”

His two sons, Steve and Joey, are now fol-lowing him in the trade — the third genera-tion of Lang blacksmiths.

“They are the best thing that has happenedto me,” he said.

The blacksmith shop now does weldingand makes beautiful wrought-iron work, along with Damacus knives and swords.Lang has developed a way of working alayer of gold into those knives, to make themeven more striking.

But Lang sees his metal-framed homes —which are made in pre-fabricated sections —as a revolutionary new way of buildingstrong, light dwellings that can be assembledwith great speed.

“In Haiti there are people living in tents,”he said. “We could build villages overnight.”
