MASHA AND DASHA: TWO HEARTS IN ONE [2019]Director Diana TaylorDuration 17.00 minutes

A documentary film by Festival Director Diana Taylor and the book The Less You Know The Sounder You Sleep with author, Juliet Butler.

Juliet Butler qualified with a degree in Russian at Exeter University and, in 1982, became a journalist in Moscow where she met the world’s most extreme Siamese twins, Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapov. Juliet discovered that the twins had been used for human experiments by the Russian physiologist Professor Anokhin and institutionalised all their lives. She tells the incredible story of the twins who were hidden away from society for 50 years.

Author, Juliet Butler, and film director Diana Taylor, will answer questions about the book and making the award-winning film. Juliet will be signing copies of her book.

WELCOMEWelcome to the third Newlyn PZ International Film Festival (NPZIFF), now established at The Acorn in Penzance, bringing films from around the world from independent filmmakers not shown on the commercial film circuit. NPZIFF 2020 promises to be a bigger and better festival than ever. We’ll bring the world to Penzance, so sit back, relax and enjoy!

During the festival weekend, expect a variety of new, exciting films and Q and A sessions with directors, as well as talks and workshops with film specialists. This year’s programme includes 8 award categories - fiction, animation, documentary, student, best female director, Cornish films, poetry films, and scriptwriting.

Films by Cornish filmmakers will be screened on Sunday 26 April – other award categories will be shown throughout the festival weekend. A video café in The Acorn bar will show a selection of films submitted this year, as well as a variety of other events – a great place to network and meet people from the film world.

Early booking is recommended for special feature film events:

Fri 24 April 19:00: For Sama - a documentary filmed by a young Syrian mother, Waad al-Kateab, in war-torn Aleppo.Sat 25 April 19:00: Bait - filmed in Cornwall by Mark Jenkin, followed by dancing with a Cornish band, Money to the Moon. From the USA a film about a young girl who chases storms with her dad. Later on in her middle age she sells storm doors on a door to door basis for her charismatic but unscrupulous boss, a cult-like character who swindles Bonnie out of her commission on her first deal. When Bonnie challenges him his anger turns into a storm of rage like a tornado.

SHOWDOWN [Wales, UK] Director Lewis Carter Duration 16.26 minutes

A young autistic boy named Sam, with a passion for Western films, must decide whether to stand down or stay his ground when a showdown for the soul of the village takes place in the local corner shop. Filmed on location in Wales.

A film from Indonesia. In rural Java, a 14 year old girl is beaten by her father for surfing. Her mother sends her to Bali where she spends 4 years training for a trial for a pro team place. Eva impresses the International manager of a major surf brand but then comes face to face with a greater personal tragedy.

Martin is a fisherman without a boat, his brother Steven having re-purposed it as a tourist tripper. With their childhood home now a get-away for London money, Martin is displaced to the estate above the harbour.

A screening of Mark Jenkin’s film, set in Cornwall, followed by dancing with Andy Law and his Penzance-based band Money to the Moon.

Playing acoustic music from the past 400 years, their unique combination of two fiddles, mandolin, bouzouki, and melodeon creates a multi-textured sound bringing the emotion and energy of beautiful Cornish tunes to life.
