It is a joy to witness the Artistic Expression of Cardinal Newman students. Whether attending a play, a dance show, a concert, or viewing a video, a drawing, a photograph, I feel pride in their results and a twinge of jealousy at the many talents of

our young people. My American Literature teacher in high school guided our class of 14 students to put on the play “Twelve Angry Men.” With parts for each juror and the bailiff, I was the one student who missed the cut through auditions since the teacher explained that I acted as though I was conducting a meeting. We are blessed to have excellent teachers guiding our students. We thank them for their leadership! And, we thank you for joining us in celebrating the marvelous talents displayed by Cardinal Newman students.

Mike Truesdell President

An education without Arts is not a complete education; in our quest to educate the whole person at Cardinal Newman, we challenge our students to experience a range of arts and follow their favorites as a way to discover themselves. We want the Arts to be alive within them;

we celebrate the performances and achievements that happen each year as evidence of their growth. Looking back at my high school years, without drama or speech, I could not have more fully developed. My friends who sang or danced were happier and well rounded, the musicians I knew taught me musical appreciation as they played for us and each other. The pictures, painted, drawn, or photographed moved us with images unexpected, capturing a moment in an image. Today, we see their gifts shared and are touched by their artistry, while artistic skills and classes expand.

Art is valuable in and of itself, is proven to enhance critical thinking skills, helps students deconstruct and appreciate the visual messages they are faced with everyday in this world, is a powerful vehicle for

communication, worth studying and enjoyable!

There is overwhelming research that a strong arts education makes for a more well-rounded student while in school and in adult life. The College Board, Profile of College-Bound Seniors National Report for 2001, 2002, and 2004 states that “Students who have had arts education have higher SAT scores than other students”. Cardinal Newman High School recognizes this and has made a strong commitment to arts education. That has lead to the expansion of a variety of arts classes offered at the school, as well as the expansion of the arts faculty at the school. The result is that Newman is beginning to be known as a place where kids with artistic interests in the fine arts, music, drama or dance, have a place where they can grow and be challenged.

Since 2010, all of our major arts events came together into a one-week period of time. The new arrangement was dubbed “Arts Alive!” week. Arts Alive! is the one week out of the year where the main focus at Cardinal Newman is the arts, art students and art classes. Every student at Newman takes at least one art class in the time they are enrolled here. Arts Alive is a time to step back and reflect on how that enriches the Newman community, the students themselves and the world.

The art disciplines at Cardinal Newman High School are active throughout the year with lectures, workshops, concerts, and galleries. Each year, a festival is held in the spring where the entire school turns its attention on the art programs. The students create, perform and enjoy. It’s a time to reflect on the progress made in classes and plan for the future. The Arts Alive Festival is a week long celebration with a new event happening every night. The festival starts with a pep rally for all students and the Newman community before the festival Week. This gives a sneak peak to the music and dance performances, excerpts from the film festival night, examples of fine art projects and live art making games and events that students can participate in.

Arts AliveFEstival

During the Arts Alive week a different performance is held each night. The festival includes a Visual Art gallery opening with performances by vocal music, dance, and drama, a night of poetry, a student film festival and closing with a night of music and performing arts. There is something for everyone!

A graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Morris Acevedo has been performing and teaching professionally since 1990. A

Texas native, Morris started out studying Rock Guitar but soon changed his focus to Jazz and Classical Guitar. He has performed on stage, toured nationally and released albums with groups ranging from Rock, Swing, Jazz and Country in his native Texas, New England and in the San Francisco Bay Area. In San Francisco he was a member of ensembles led by Scott Amendola, Noe Venable, Richie Cole, Jessie Turner and Emily Bezar. His love of teaching music and guitar led to positions on the teaching staff at the Blue Bear School of American Music & Community Music Center in San Francisco, Blue Note Music in Berkeley and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2008 he was selected for a full scholarship to study Jazz at the Banff Center for the Arts in Banff Canada. Morris began teaching music full time at Cardinal Newman in 2008 as has since developed an intensive Guitar program as

“The Cardinal Newman band is more than a class. It creates excitement and challenges students to move beyond their familiar musical comfort zones by mixing many different musical styles into its repertoire including, Rock, Classical, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Pop music. The study of Harmony, Ear Training and Improvisation form the cornerstone of musical tools that enable students to continue music beyond high school, college and into adulthood.”

The Cardinal Newman ensemble is more than a band. it’s main goal to develop musical skills that are relevant to the real world after high school graduation. The year starts out in full swing with the ensemble performing fun, loud, Pop music at home sporting events such as football and basketball games. The emphasis is on exuberance and goal is to get the crowd excited to help propel the sports teams to victory and unite sporting event to an artistic endeavor. Next the ensemble focuses on Improvisation, a vital musical skill that is applicable to many styles of music. Theory, technique and knowledge of various musical scales come together to enable students to create improvised solos with the accompaniment of the rhythm section (guitar, bass, keyboards and drums). Classical music is studied and performed to help students focus on the subtle nuances of tone, articulation, dynamics and ensemble listening. All of the the music mentioned so far involve reading standard notation. The Funk / R&B units involve learning parts by ear from recordings. Classic and contemporary groove music functions to reinforce a band sound and help students lock in time feels that make listeners want to move. Towards the end of the year the ensemble becomes the main accompaniment for the large variety of musical acts that perform at So Show Me,

the schools performing arts showcase. Everything from Heavy Metal to contemporary Top-40 hits are learned by the ensemble to help accompany singers and instrumentalists from the student body.

These components make up a collection of experiences and skills that help students understand the demands of the various musical styles covered. Many students participate in the ensemble year after year and go on to form their own bands after high school, allowing them to share their love of music and dedication to the arts far beyond the Cardinal Newman campus.

(Mozart to Metal)All freshmen take a short 9 week long music class that introduces them to how music works and how instruments are played. This is the class to get your feet wet in the music world. There are units on Hip Hop rapping, basic guitar, keyboard, drums and electronic music production. In addition there is ample listening and analysis of Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, Classical, World and Folk music. The particular elements that go into each genre of music will be discussed along with their significance musically, historically and culturally. Even though on the surface the various genres of music sound different and seem to operate in different ways, they share so much in terms of mechanics and construction. Its great to hear and learn how that happens. The music you like will be expanded by understanding how it operates and relates to other styles.Getting your hands on musical instruments adds to the experience. Students will come away with instrumental skills that they can build on and use as a starting point for further instrumental study.

All students at Cardinal Newman are encouraged to audition for each production. Each show requires at least 8 weeks of rehearsal that requires teamwork and focus. The goal of the Dramatic Arts Department is to give students the opportunity to experience live theater by doing it, over and over and over again. Through this process students learn the many elements necessary to performing. Live Theater builds self-confidence, discipline, teamwork, self-awareness and many other qualities that help students succeed to both their personal and public life. Why Art? Art develops various modes of cognition, learning to think in text and speech are just two, learning to think visually, to engage in musical cognition, to be able to think in metaphor, to see and understand poetic images are only a few of the ways the arts impact the development of our senses and the understanding needed to refine oursensibilities. The art class is where students begin the artistic cognitive process through critical judgment and hands-on experience. My goal as an Art teacher is to allow the student anopportunity to begin to better understand how art and design fits into our everyday life.In our homes, our dress, the way we speak and move. The influence good design hason the cars we drive, homes we live in, the buildings we occupy and environments wewitness.

PhotogrAPhy The Photography Program at Cardinal Newman High School is divided into three basic parts. For the student who wants to take an elective course without the need to satisfy the Visual and Performing Art requirements, there is Photo 1. This course, typically offered in the fall semester, is a single semester course that covers most aspects of Black and White photography. During the execution of a wide variety of assignments, the student learns how to operate a 35mm SLR camera, process the film, and make final prints in the school darkroom. Also, the student learns about composition and gains hands on experience with studio lighting. The student who needs to fulfill the VPA requirements, will take the Photo 1-2 course which lasts a whole year. The first semester, is the same as Photo 1 above. The second semester covers the use of digital cameras

and the manipulation and processing of images with digital editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop. An overview of the history of photography and examination and discussion of the works of some of the “great” photographers.
