During the Holocaustmany ar t ists spokeout, trying to stop thedestruction of theirsociety. Two of themwere musician/composer ViktorUllmann and his
colleague librettist Peter Kien. Their satiricopera “Der Kaiser von Atlantis, oder Die Tod-Verweigerung” (“The Emperor of Atlantis, orDeath’s Refusal”) was composed around1943 while Ul lmann and Kien wereimprisoned in Theresienstadt. The one-actopera “Der Kaiser von Atlantis” wasrehearsed in Theresienstadt in March 1944.The Nazi authorities, however, understoodthe depiction of the Emperor as a satire onAdolf Hitler and refused to allow the opera’sperformance.
For this Colorado premiere, the co-producerswill expand the experience of the opera, creating a preface and an epilogue, featuring
both traditional Eastern European klezmermusic and an orchestral score seamlesslyintegrating a world premiere dance andcreating new communities of hope. Thedance will be choreographed by BNC’sGarrett Ammon and set to music by Ofer Ben-Amots, Israeli born composer and Chair ofthe Music Department of Colorado College.

MEET ROBERT AND JUDI NEWMAN With the NewmanCenter just having com-pleted its ninth season, these avid philanthro-pists smile when theyremember becominginvolved in the cam-paign to create an out-standing center for theperforming arts at the
University of Denver. Daniel L. Ritchie, then chan-cellor, invited Judi to head the effort when theCenter was only a dream. Later the Center wasnamed in the couple’s honor. “It’s amazing thatten years have passed so quickly,” says Judi. “Weare so pleased that the University has enrichedour community and their students with wonderfulprograms and educational opportunities. Thenumber of community groups using the Centerhas far exceeded our expectations.”
The couple’s passion for performing arts and edu-cation harmoniously intersected with the NewmanCenter, which is home to exceptional performancevenues and DU’s Lamont School of Music andDepartment of Theatre. This 10th Season ofCelebration is a wonderful way to commemoratethe opening of the facility and its impact on thecommunity, as well as looking towards the nextdecade. The leadership of Nancy Cochran, Directorof the Lamont School of Music, and Rick Barbour,Chair of the Department of Theatre, guide the aca-demic programs housed in the building. StephenSeifert, Executive Director of the Newman Center, continues excellence in presenting through theUniversity’s Newman Center Presents’ series.
