MARCH 15th MEETING

GUEST PRESENTER ─ Jeff Bishop

Writer, Editor, Public Historian

W. Jeff Bishop is the executive director of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. Jeff grew up in Senoia, GA and worked for many years as a writer and editor for the Times-Herald newspaper and Newnan-Coweta Magazine, as well as other North Georgia newspapers. He was se-lected by the Newnan Theatre Company to write a play in 2016 about the 1948 John Wallace trial, the basis of Margaret Anne Barnes' Murder in Coweta County. He has written several books on Newnan and Coweta County history for Arcadia Press, the History Press, and other publishers, and has appeared on national television discussing local oracle Mayhayley Lancaster for "Monumental Mysteries," as well as in the documentary film, "Mayhayley Lancaster: Legend of an Oracle." Jeff received his undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Georgia and his master's degree in Public History and Museum Studies at the University of West Georgia. He served as president of the Trail of Tears Association's Georgia chapter from 2007 to 2014, and co-authored journal articles for Southeastern Archaeology and Dendrochronologia on the Chief John Ross House in Rossville and the Cave Spring log cabin. He has also authored research reports for the National Park Service on the Chief John Ross House, the Cherokee Removal Forts, and the Running Waters council ground. His public history projects have included developing wayside exhibits and road signage that interpret the Trail of Tears in Georgia and authoring a new Georgia Trail of Tears map and brochure, which are now available in welcome centers all over the nation. He lives in Newnan, GA with his wife and five children. His newest book is called AGATAHI: THE CHEROKEE TRAIL OF TEARS. This summer marks the 180th anniversary of the Trail of Tears, the forced removal of the Cherokee people from their homeland. This new book is the first of its kind, telling the Trail of Tears from the point of view of those who experienced it. Jeff currently serves on the Friends of New Echota board of directors, and he was recently appointed by the governor to serve on the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council.

FEBRUARY 2018 DEMONSTRATOR

Tina Persons ~ Artist, Instructor Thank you, Tina, for a wonderful pre-

sentation on family tree designs and how to create and customize multi-generational displays. Tina offers classes for anyone interested in family tree archiving and promises that you don't have to be a genealogy expert to get started; you just have to have a desire to find your place in the grand scheme of things.

GENERAL MEETING MINUTES - FEBRUARY 2018 A general meeting of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (“NCAA”), was called to order by President Tammy Troyer at 7:25 pm, on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at the Harriet Alexander Art Center. President Troyer extended a warm welcome to members, new members, and guests. Two 'family tree' display prints (templates) were donated by demonstrator Tina Persons for the Door Prize drawing. Winners were Cecil Cornwell and Chelita Freeman. President Troyer thanked members Cheryl Hipke, Sue Davis, Tina Persons, Ronda Schwenning (for Ruth Whitaker), and Joan Wende for providing refreshments that also included cake in recognition of members celebrating birthdays in 1st Qtr 2018 (Jan/Feb/Mar). President Troyer, on behalf of Suzanne Kleese-Stamps, Secretary, reported that the minutes of January 2018 General Meeting were electronically filed and published in the February 2018 newsletter. Fred Buyarski, Treasurer, reported NCAA account balances as follows:

Value Checking (PP/FB Trx) $ 754.90; Value Checking $ 3,366.29; Business Savings $ 505.75; and Money Market $ 138,638.50.

Total account balances $143,265.44. The Treasurer’s report was approved and filed. Fred Buyarski, Treasurer, on behalf of the Budget Committee, reported that the committee had completed the Proposed 2018 Budget and presented its work to the Board members at the February 8th Board meeting. The Board approved a 2018 budget of $22,040. The amount includes additional funding for the Juried Member Art Exhibit 50th Anniversary Gala in June, and the 50th Annual Christmas Arts & Crafts Market in November. Event planners were advised to manage revenue accordingly keeping in mind the goal of making a profit at

events, or at least breaking even, as the association cannot sustain itself on long-term negative cash flow. Fred Buyarski, Membership Chairman, reported a total of 149 members in good standing; 43 memberships expired, with 12 more due to expire in February. Sponsorship — Teresa Foshee reported the status of NCAA sponsorships and reminded members to seek out sponsors in 2018. Off to a great start in our "Each One Get One" cam-paign, Teresa enthusiastically announced our 4 new sponsors: (Patron) Westlake Design Studio; and (Sponsors) Crain Oil Company, Inc.; Otis F. Jones III; and Shane's Rib Shack-Griffin, and thanked the members who recruited them. Sponsorship packets are available from Teresa. You may also indicate on the 'Potential Sponsor' sign-up sheet an individual or company whom you would encourage to become a sponsor, and Teresa will gladly contact them. There is no time limit on recruitment; however, sponsorships received before end of May 2018 will be included in the Juried Art Show program. Website & Social Media — Nothing to report. BUSINESS ITEMS:

NCAA By-Laws Committee ─ President Troyer reported that

the amended By-Laws have been sent electronically to the membership for review. Questions/comments should be directed to Tammy Troyer at [email protected]. A vote to approve the By-Laws (as amended) will take place at the general meeting on March 15, 2018. Investment ─ The Board recommends investing a portion of

the proceeds from the Powers land sale into a diversified portfolio where it can yield higher interest rates than the money market fund presently earns. President Troyer met with Travis Mowrey (advisor) at Edward Jones who recommended options that would meet our needs: long & short term, diversification, low-risk, and the potential to earn more income over time with the goal of sustaining NCAA for another 50 years. Tammy will also meet with an advisor at Avery and Pope Wealth Manage-ment for a second investment opinion. "Newnan, A Storybook Town" Fiberglass Art Project —

President Troyer provided an update. Bette Hickman & Pamela Prange will meet with artists on February 27 at 6:30 pm to assign artists with sponsors. The fiberglass will be delivered to the Asa M. Powell Sr. Expo Center (located on the Recreation Complex grounds) on March 15. The fiberglass will be primed and ready to paint upon delivery. Artists are expected to pick up their pieces within two days. Deadline for completing the painting is May 14. A dedication Reception is planned for May 27 at the Powell Center, and art installation in downtown Newnan & City Park on June 1. The ad hoc com-mittee for the piece ("pig") sponsored by NCAA are Barbara Omerod, Suzanne Kleese-Stamps, Cheryl Hipke, and Tammy Troyer.

Mural for CCS Burwell Program (Headstart) ─ Tammy Troyer

and Margo Merrifield met with Burwell to discuss the mural. More information and start date to follow. Interested artists, see Tammy and add your name to the artist sign-up sheet. Commonwealth at Calumet, Painted Utility Boxes ─

Jenny Jones reported there are 12 utility boxes located at Calumet. Due to safety concerns by Newnan Utilities, artists will not be painting on the boxes themselves, but rather on the covers. Painting will be done in 2 or 3 phases depending on how many spare covers Newnan Utilities has in stock. They will swap the art covers with the current ones. Phase 1 goal is to display art on at least 3 and possibly 6 boxes. Newnan Utilities will provide space at its warehouse to paint, and they are building stands for the covers at a height comfortable for artists. Paint will be provided, and prepping of the boxes will be done ahead of time. Notification of chosen art work will be on or before March 9. Start date will be announced. Time-frame to complete the artwork is 2-3 weeks. Deadline to submit application and design is March 2. Information and application were electronically sent to membership on February 10. Please contact Ruth Ann Embrey with any questions. 770-301-7236 ♦ [email protected]

March 2018

Barbara Moore

Barbara was born and raised in Iowa. She attended Drake University and while there, met her hus-band, Richard. They have been married over 50 years and have two sons and two grandsons.

The Moores lived near San Antonio, Texas while the children were in elementary school. In 1989, they moved to Peachtree City, GA and 8 years later built a home at Lake Redwine.

Barbara taught school, mainly Kindergarten, at The Heritage School in Newnan for many years. After she retired, she began painting and taking art lessons in Sharpsburg. She has had her art showcased at the Newnan and Peachtree City libraries. She has been in the Juried Art Show at the Nixon Centre, and displayed paintings at Callaway Gardens and the Clayton Gallery. Acrylics are her medium of choice and she enjoys creating peaceful outdoor scenes.

Barbara's other hobbies include playing the Mountain Dulcimer, working in her yard, boating on Lake Redwine, and sewing seasonal costumes for eighteen inch dolls. She is an advocate for education, research, and support for those, like her husband, who have Scleroderma.

Barbara and her husband serve as Board members for the Georgia Chapter of the Scleroderma Foundation and have served as Support Group Leaders. They are members of the North Georgia Foothills Dulcimer Association and play with the Peach Pickers in Peachtree City. They are also members of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association.

Barbara loves retirement and wonders how she ever had time to work. She stated that, “Retirement has given me the opportunity to explore the joys of art and music, as well as a chance to meet new people in the community who share those interests”.

NCAA RANDOM TIDBITS from the archives...

Newnan native Harriet Owens Alexander (1927-2000), a

charter member of NCAA and the Art Center's namesake, was not the association's 1st President. That honor went to charter member L.M. Mayo who served as President the first two years. Harriet served as President two times: 1970/71 and 1992/93. We know she was an artist but did you know that she was a nurse at Newnan Hospital?

A FULL HOUSE

May 16, 1991 ~ NCAA held its first meeting in the newly reno-vated Recreation Department Art House (where we currently meet). The program was an "Art House Shower" to celebrate the new location and included a Pot Luck Supper. Members gifted household items for the kitchen and bathrooms (paper goods, soap, a tea kettle, toilet tissue, trash bags, etc.). Member name tags were used for the first time at General Meetings. The President was Nell Fronabarger.

PURSUING DREAMS

A note from David Boyd, Jr. to NCAA Scholarship Chair-

person, Marcia Keith, summer of 1991

Dear Ms. Keith, I have just completed the arduous task of packing all of my worldly goods into the car for my trip to Savannah College of Art and Design. I am excited about this new beginning and feel lucky to have the opportunity to pursue my love for art at such an outstanding school. Receiving your generous $1,000 scholarship on Honors Day for Heritage School has made this college experience possible for me. Without it, I would have had to look at second and third choices of schools. On behalf of my parents and myself, please accept my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for helping me attend Savannah. It means so much to have the support of my community, and I am humbled and honored that you have faith in me. I will try not to disappoint you! Sincerely, David Boyd

Brainstorming: Your Board &

Committee Members Hard at Work

They say, if you want to kill an idea, give it to a committee. Perhaps, but 'not so' at NCAA! *wink* Our committee chairs and volunteers are awesome and hard-working folks. We couldn't do it without them. At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to our success is the positive involvement of our members. Your commitment makes a difference. Bravo!

Young Artists of Newnan & Coweta County This year, the 'Young Artists' studied American artist, Andy Warhol, who literally found art in the small joys of daily life. The exhibit is based on one of Warhol's most iconic works - Campbell's Soup cans.

Students focused on the importance of lines and combining all the different lines and shapes, they created their own personal soup can art. Mediums used: oil, pastel, and acrylic. Please stop by the Coweta County Municipal Building Art Gallery in March to see the Advanced Young Artist’s

papers in her works, too. She may strew them with salt, paste paper, and watercolor wash. She also incorporates fused glass, stainless steel pads, and other found objects, both natural and man-made. Teresa Foshee recently exhibited her

photography at the library when repre-senting NCAA as one of the library’s Artists of the Month. Teresa graduated from LaGrange College with a double concentration in Photography and Ceramics & Sculpture in 2016, which fulfilled a longtime dream of finishing a degree started much earlier in life. The library is displaying her works in both abstract photography and clay. Be sure to find her bas relief sculpture in the library’s new area

for art display near the fireplace.
