Dear Parents, Children, Staff & Governors, WEEKLY NEWS

This week’s theme is: ‘I understand what trust means’.

St Luke reminds us that if we trust in Jesus, we need not be afraid:

Jesus said to his disciples to look how the wild flowers grow: they do not work or make clothes for themselves. But I tell you that not even King Solomon with all his wealth had clothes as beautiful as one of these flowers. … So do not start worrying: Where will my food come from? Or my drink/ or my clothes/ Your Father in heaven knows that you need all these things. Instead, be concerned about everything else with the Kingdom of God and he will provide all these other things. So do not

worry about tomorrow; it will have enough worries of its own. There is no need to add to the troubles each day brings.

This blessing prayer talks of trust. It was written a long time ago on as island called Barra to the west of Scotland. It was especially said when people went off on a long journey:

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the darkest night, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the

wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again unto our doors. RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL: You have the right to find out things and share what you think with others, by talking, drawing,

writing or in any other way unless it harms or offends other people [UNCRC, Article 13].

MAY PRAYERS: Are you able to come in first thing in the morning, or at lunchtime, to lead some prayer with our children? Perhaps you could tell one of the stories as a focus for prayer that link to the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries of the Rosary?

SHINE WEEK: Our LIFTED Super-Learning Shine Week will take place week beginning 28th May. On

Friday 1st June, classes will perform their creative revue. Awards for All Big Lottery funding has ensured that new

OLYMPIC TORCH TRAVELS THROUGH WESTHOUGHTON: On Thursday 31st May, school will close

early, at 3:15pm, enabling families to collect ahead of the Olympic Torch journeying through the town. Sacred Heart, along with other Westhoughton schools has been invited to watch the relay, and our cluster of schools have agreed positions along the roadside that they should meet. Sacred Heart parents are invited to take their children to Market Street, outside the Lloyds TSB bank to watch the relay. Whilst the torch is expected at around 5:30pm, there will be various celebrations before that time, and everyone is encouraged to be at their viewing point by 4pm. It is important to stand on the Lloyds TSB side of the road to view the events. On Friday 1

st June, 20 Y6 pupils will be invited to join other Bolton schools at the Town Hall steps in

Bolton as 2,012 children wave a special goodbye to the torch. This will be filmed by the BBC. More details will follow, as Westhoughton cluster schools will travel into Bolton together, departing at just after 4am that morning. Children taking part will be given breakfast at the Town Hall after the torch has left Bolton.

shine in the tests. MATCH UPDATE: SHFC UKS2 Bolton School Football Tournament – 04/05/2012

Mr Tipton & Mr McMahon write… This was Sacred Heart’s third time at the Bolton School Football Tournament. Mr McMahon and Mr Tipton took two teams to Bolton School to participate in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ competitions. Mr McMahon took charge of the ‘A’ team. The group was the strongest in the competition and, as predicted, produced the eventual tournament winner. The schools involved were Beaumont, Brownlow Fold, Blackrod Primary and Johnson Fold. The first game was against Beaumont, a team we have had close matches with in the past. Their team boasted 3 academy players, which affected our team. They gave the opposition far too much respect, resulting in a quick 2 goal lead for Beaumont. This jolted our team into action and we began to dominate the game and got a deserved goal back. The traffic was all one way but we were unable to

Page 3: NEWS 10MAY2012

capitalise - and the match ended 2-1. Beaumont celebrated as if this was the final. This immediately put us under pressure to get results… The team responded well and came out firing on all cylinders, racing into a 3-0 lead against Brownlow Fold. The ‘real’ SHFC had turned up one game too late! In our next game we played Blackrod Primary and again totally dominated the game - the final score line of 2-1 flattering the opposition. Beaumont had won 3 and drawn 1 meaning we had to win by 4 goals or more to qualify for the semi-final. In our final game against Johnson Fold we attacked from the start. Unfortunately we were vulnerable to the counter attack and went behind. Caution was thrown to the wind in a chase for goals and the equaliser soon came. In a desperate attempt to qualify, we again conceded a goal. The woodwork and a string of fine saves from the goalkeeper meant that we couldn’t add to our total and the game ended in a 2-1 loss. The team had tried hard but the first match had determined how the group would take shape. Beaumont went on to win the tournament without any further difficulties. Thank you to Thomas Bateman, Adam O’Donnell, Zach Armstrong, Jamie Ramwe ll, Adam Senior, Adam Walton, Zak Valentine and Ethan Chase for representing us so well: They were a credit to Sacred Heart! At the end of the tournament, a scout from Wigan Athletic approached Mr McMahon with a view to offering Adam Senior and Jamie Ramwell training and trial sessions. Adam is already signed to Bolton but Jamie has accepted and begins training soon. Mr Tipton managed the ‘B’ team who had a large squad of boys and girl (Sanna McLean) and were set to play Beaumont, Johnson Fold and St Thomas’ Chequerbent. The first game was against Beaumont and we started well, penning the Beaumont team back in their own half for large swathes of the game. After many chances we finally scored - with Callum Wood scoring with a fiercely struck right footed shot which went in off the left hand post. Sacred Heart went on to dominate the game but disaster… a lack in concentration at the back saw a clearance reach only the Beaumont attack who had a free run on goal to score an undeserved equaliser. The final whistle was blown and the first game ended with a point a piece for both teams. The second game saw Sacred Heart play St Thomas’ Chequerbent, which again saw Sacred Heart dominate, however it ended in a 0-0 draw. The final game saw us play Johnson Fold and yet another 0-0 draw: 3 games played and 3 points. We were through on goals scored as we were level on points with Johnson Fold but had scored 1 goal more than them (our only goal scored – by Callum Wood). The quarter finals saw us start strongly and quickly went 2-0 up with good goals scored by Joseph Woods and again by Callum Wood. The charge was on and the semi-finals saw us pitted against stronger opponents as they scored early on, however Sacred Heart fought back and eventually the equaliser was found with Callum Wood scoring a deserved equaliser. The final whistle blew and 2 minutes golden goal extra time came and went so the semi-final and a place in the grand final would be decided by penalties! John-Paul saved a penalty with a good save to his left and then our opponents put one wide which left TJ Topping scoring the penalty that put us through to rapturous applause. Well done Sacred Heart! Our opponents in the final were Eagley Juniors and as soon as the game started we knew we would have to be at our best to get a result. Eagley started strongly with good passing down the left wing which kept Joseph Woods and TJ Topping busy at the back. We came back with a good early chance finding Callum Wood unmarked; however the Eagley keeper smothered the chance. Disaster and Eagley scored from the right hand side and time was running out. Then luckily a mistake by the Eagley defence saw one of their players encroach into their own area gifting Sacred Heart a penalty. Joseph Woods strode up to dispatch the penalty with a ferocious shot straight down the middle into the Eagley net: 1-1 and the game was back on! Normal time came to an end and three minutes of golden goal extra time was to be played. Naturally this was played out nervously by both teams as one mistake could end either team’s hopes of glory! Penalties were looming large but fate decided that we wouldn’t be needing them as a strong Eagley shot fizzed towards our goal and into the top right corner – Eagley had won with only 30 seconds remaining on the clock! Sacred Heart left the field disappointed but proud of their effort in SHFC colours Both Mr Tipton and Mr McMahon want to thank all the players who took part in the tournament for both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams: You were a credit to the school and should be proud of yourselves – Well done!

MATCH UPDATE: SHFC Bolton Wanderers Year 2 [Eddie Hopkinson Tournament] 10/05/2012 It only seems yesterday that the Year 2 team were playing at Bolton Academy to qualify to play at the Reebok Stadium. Unfortunately the day did not start well with Annabel Edge unfit to play due to illness which depleted our ranks. She would be missed as she played a pivotal role in qualifying, scoring a good goal in one of the matches. The Year 2 team were pitted against 3 other teams in our group stage. The first game was against St John’s. Sacred Heart started nervously and were soon under pressure from their opponents with some dangerous long throws putting the Sacred Heart goal under intense pressure.

Unfortunately some lapses in concentration resulted in Sacred Heart being 2-0 down in a matter of a few minutes. However Sacred Heart rallied and began to fight back and some good passing resulted in Oliver Ball scoring a good goal from the right hand side into the net, to make it 2-1. Unfortunately time ran out and Sacred Heart had lost their first game! The second game was against St Peter’s CE. Sacred Heart had obviously woken up as they pressed the goal straight away with Joseph Brooks picking the ball up from the kick off and bursting through and shooting with his left foot sending the ball into the bottom left hand side of the goal: 1-0 to Sacred Heart. Sullivan Barker scored next from close range striking the ball firmly into the net after some confusion in the St Peter’s goal area. Then Joseph Brooks scored his brace with a similar move to the first this time with his right foot to make it 3-0! Hat-trick time for Joseph Brooks as he found himself one-on-one with the keeper coolly slotting it to the left hand side of the keeper. Sacred Heart were running rampant and it didn’t stop there - with Sullivan Barker scoring from a low header to make it 5-0! With the game coming to the end, Sacred Heart still pushed hard onto the St Peters goal with a long range cross which baffled the keeper rolling into the bottom right hand corner to make it 6-0. This was more like the Sacred Heart that we know!!! Our final game was against Clayton-Le-Woods, and we knew we had to win this game to have any chance of making it through to the latter stages. However, the game didn’t go to plan and Clayton-Le-Woods attacked from the kick off with their first chance of the game to peg us back 1-0! Sacred Heart had a mountain to climb and knew they had to start playing. Oliver Ball began the fight back with a good run down the left wing ending with a delightful chip over the keeper to make it 1-1. Joseph then scored from the same side with a right footed shot past the left hand side of the keeper to allow Sacred Heart to take the lead! Sullivan Barker then found himself clear on goal and coolly shot to make it 3-1 to Sacred Heart. Oliver then scored his second of the game with a fiercely struck close range shot leaving the goalkeeper with no chance! Our final goal to make it 5-1 was scored by Sullivan Barker from long range with his left foot finding the bottom right hand side of the net. After the final whistle was blown and all the results were collected in we realised that we were not through to the next round of the tournament due to St John’s winning all 3 of their group games, putting them on 9 points to our 6. St John’s made it all the way to the final, being beaten by Horwich Parish who lifted the cup. Mr Tipton and Mr McMahon want to say well done to all the boys and Annabel Edge who played in the qualifying stages of the tournament: You played brilliantly and were a credit to the school.

The next SHFC match is against Eatock, at home, on 23

rd May (the week after National Tests).

Thank you to AWK computers who sponsored our new team kit!

Have you noticed the dramatic changes in our area? Last Friday an order of logs were delivered by Mr Richardson so that we could get busy developing the area further. Mr Bilinkewycz and Mr Simpson have been busy creating fire and shelter areas, and other spaces within the zone,

ready for the next sessions of workshops will continue to run each Thursday with Mr Simpson, now focusing on KS2. Do you have any traditional hand-tools that are gathering dust in your shed - and that you have no more use for? We want traditional hammers, mallets, hand drills & bits, chisels, files, screw drivers etc. to help with our small group outdoor education work.

GOAL BOTTLE TUNNEL: We still need lots more 2litre round plastic bottles – in all colours. Please collect them and

send into school.

ROOM 2 GROW: This week in the Room 2 Grow the children tended to the crops - including those in our mini-greenhouse, weeded the

beds, dug for the sign to be erected in the and cleaned out the animals.

If you have any seeds to donate to our outdoor spaces, please send them in. Donations of Logs and any unpainted wood for burning are also much appreciated.

WELCOME: To our new cleaner, Barbara Rowlands, who started this week via our cleaning contractor, G1C. Best wishes to Stephanie

Armstrong who left G1C last week. BUILDING PROGRAMME PHASE 2: Thank you to everyone who worked hard to achieve phase 1 of our rebuild and refurbishment

programme. To complete the vision of our new school, a planning application for phase 2 has now been submitted to Bolton Council. Please support our application, by writing or emailing your voice of support to Bolton Council. Phase 2 is a £2 million scheme that will see the extension and refurbishment of our KS2 and admin wings, and the extension of our hall into the space currently used as Y5 studio classrooms.
