‘Health kits’ from LDSC for rehab clients The Latter-day Saint Charities are major supporters of the institute’s primary care Vision Centre program in the unreached districts of the state. They have also made “health kits” to promote health awareness among underprivileged children in Andhra Pradesh. The kit has a toothbrush, toothpaste, hand towel, bathing towel, a soap, a comb and a mirror. Seven hundred kits were assembled and distributed to children with AIDS, orphans or those economically underprivileged. Dr Neldon and Mrs Priscilla Hatch from LDSC and two volunteers visited the Vision Rehabilitation Centres at LVPEI’s Hyderabad campus on June 13, 2012, and interacted with our young clients Sabhasudhin, Ameena, Altafudhin, Harish Yadav, Vamshi and Bhanu Prakash, who had come for training in various life skills. The children were given ‘health kits’, after an orientation talk by Ms Beula Christy on the importance of personal health and hygiene. The LDSC donated 200 kits to the centre for distribution among poor visually challenged children. Patient Story

Patient Feedback

Our Support in June

From blindness to light – the miracle of eye donationRegaining sight after living in a world of darkness for decades seems nothing short of a miracle. But for doctors at LVPEI, it was just another day at work.

Rajiv Thareja had congenital glaucoma. He was operated upon when he was 11 days old and gained 10 to 15% of his sight. When he was 8, he underwent his first corneal transplant and, thereafter, enjoyed pretty good vision for a few years until he again lost vision in both the eyes. All through his high school and college he was virtually blind.

With the support of his doting parents, he completed his graduation in music, taking the help of a writer for writing his exams. Determined to be independent, he began teaching music to children and also became involved in his father’s business – an optical outlet chain spread over several cities in northern India. He also successfully pursued his childhood dream of starting a hotel business, not letting his sub-optimal vision stop him. Today he owns a 30-room hotel in Gwalior, Uttar Pradesh. In 2005, he got married and had a child. But the marriage did not last long.

Rajiv had undergone several corneal transplantations, including one in 1980 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and another one in 1989 at a private hospital in New Delhi. However, each time the corneal transplant was rejected by his body.

In February 2011 Rajiv underwent a corneal transplant at LVPEI, Hyderabad. He also had a complex combination surgery — for cataract surgery and glaucoma to control his intraocular pressure. Since then, he has enjoyed reasonably good vision. On a recent follow-up visit, he said, “I was blind, but now I can see. I can even drive a motorcycle now. Dr Muralidhar and Dr Anil Mandal have given me the vision that no other doctor could succeed in doing.”

Rajiv recalls Dr Muralidhar’s words to him when he first arrived here, “Do you want vision? Let me tell you that you have a good chance of seeing again.” Rajiv showed us a recent newspaper article profiling him, where he has spoken of the shortage of corneas available for transplantation, which prevents many others like him from seeing again. He says he will continue to spread the message of eye donation, which has enabled him to see again.

With his glaucoma under control and a good corneal graft in his left eye, Rajiv is now on the look-out for a new life partner!

Words fail me in adequately expressing my opinion on the premier institute, viz, L V Prasad Eye Institute, GMR Varalakshmi Campus, Visakhapatnam. The eminent team of specialist doctors and surgeons stands second to none. The supporting staff, across all ranks, are affectionate, courteous, large-hearted and dedicated (that) made me feel as it is my second home. The green lush landscaped gardens are par excellence and add to the therapeutic charm of the renowned institution.

With all benevolence and gratitude I pray to God that in no time it would grow to be recognized as an A1 institute for the restoration of sight to many.
