Thursday, September 30, 2010 Irish Eyes News 2 Yearbooks on sale at reduced price The 2010-2011 yearbooks are now on sale for $50 until Oct. 30, at which point the price will go up to $55. See Mrs. Lampo in Room 404 for an order form. Yearbooks from 2000-2010 are also on sale for $50, while yearbooks from years prior to that are $40. Band seeks new members The Marching Band is seeking out new members. Students interested in learning to play an instrument should see Mr. Jackson in Room 517 to discuss joining. French Club recruits memebers The French Club is planning a trip to Paris, France for the summer of 2011. Anyone who is interested is welcome to see Madame Kerr in Room 224 for details. No French speaking is required. GEE scores among lowest in Jefferson Parish schools Ten King students participated in a photography worshop sponsored by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art on August 20. Telling Their Stories: The Lingering Legacy of Katrina is an exhibit commemorating the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Ashley Guillory Senior Board sells class cards The Senior Board has begun selling two types of class cards: the Irish Card for $110 and the Celtic Card for $60. With each card, students receive admission to the Senior Social, Senior Prom and a favor, Senior Breakfast and a favor, Graduation tickets and a Senior shirt. The Irish Card also includes a yearbook. Biology Club elects officers The 2010-2011 Biology Club officrs are the following: President, Alexis Richard; Vice President, Zachary Gerard; Treasurer, Lindsey Brown; and Secretary Kyle Ortega. Freshman class elects officers The 2010-2011 Freshmen Board officers are as follows: President, Jessie Chen; Vice President, Pei Yu; Secretary, Marley Olavarrieta; and Treasurer, Linda Lin. School board member Judy Colgan, who has represented District 8 since 2000, describes King as “the premier high school of Jefferson Parish” and feels that a combination of factors has brought Grace King to this point. “The problems that Grace King is facing have been driven by magnet schools. When magnet schools were introduced, many of King’s teachers and highest performing students were moved. This left a void, especially after Hurricane Katrina. Resurfacing of the Dandrige act has also changed school boundaries and with that student body has changed,” she said. When asked what specific steps she is taking to improve Grace King’s performance Colgan said, “We will be introducing different learning methods and additional personnel if necessary.
