NEWS Message from our President Time for Transition As we prepare to travel to San Fran- cisco, we think about the transition that will occur at our 49th Annual Session. There will be changes in the composition of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the Research & Education Foundation, the American Board of Endodontics, standing committees and special and Ad Hoc Committees - almost every facet of our Association. This passage of responsibility from one member to an- other helps make our AAE a remarkable Association. We have a tremendous number of capable men and women who volunteer to serve our profession and our specialty in a manner which is the envy of other organizations. Their contributions do not go unnoticed. The availability of our members helps to make the transition a smooth one. How- ever, there are some areas where the needs of our Associa- tion may be better served by less change and more stability, especially in the area of Committee Chairs. The one stabiliz- ing influence in our Association is our Executive Director, Irma Kudo, who has returned to full strength with her superb management style and organizational ability. As your President, I have had an exciting and challenging year. Some goals were accomplished; most problems solved. In consultation with the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, decisions were made for the good of the Associa- tion. If mistakes were made, they were corrected as we learned to be flexible in achieving our goals. I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with an efficient staff and the most dedicated and talented group of volunteer men and women that any profession has ever known. Besides meet- ing and listening to our members, one of the rewards of traveling during the past two years was not that I discovered that you can order one of thirteen different airline special meals, but that I was given the opportunity to meet and speak with many of our members and listen to their concerns. For the most part, my travels were solo - my problems with flight cancellations and delays were well known to the AAE and my family. In general, we have a very satisfied membership and we are appreciative of the fact that they have given us excellent ideas and suggestions. Just as our country is celebrating the 500th anniversary this year of the arrival of Columbus in the New World, our Association will begin its 50th anniversary year with the installation of our 50th President in San Francisco. In prepa- ration for this event, five Past President's messages were published in our Journal. Others who volunteered to contrib- ute their message will be afforded the opportunity in the coming year. We appreciate the comments received from so many readers about these messages. During the past year, I have worked closely with our next President, Stuart Fountain. He is an enthusiastic, resource- ful gentleman who can adapt well to any situation. Stuart brings to us a vast amount of professional experience having served in responsible positions on a local, state and national level. He is proud of his profession as an endodontist and will work diligently to increase the respect and prestige it pres- ently enjoys. We wish him well as he leads us in our 50th anniversary year. In closing, t thank all of you for helping to make this a memorable year for me. Every person with whom I had contact treated me with kindness and understanding. I can assure you that you have every right to be as proud as I am of our Association. I look forward to being with all of you in San Francisco where together we will enjoy an exciting and memorable meeting. Joseph I. NEWS Message from our President

Time for Transition

As we prepare to travel to San Fran- cisco, we think about the transition that will occur at our 49th Annual Session. There will be changes in the composition of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the Research & Education Foundation, the American Board of Endodontics, standing committees and

special and Ad Hoc Committees - almost every facet of our Association.

For the most part, my travels were solo - my problems with flight cancellations and delays were well known to the AAE and my family. AAE Auxiliary News We are excited about the program for the AAE Annual Session, May 6-10, 1992 in San Francisco. Refer to the December issue of the Journal for exact program and times. You will also receive another newsletter just prior to the convention.

The General Interest Session on Thursday will feature Frank Casanova, DDS, MScD and Gregory Imbach, MS speaking on the delightful subject, Wine: the sensible bever- age for all seasons. Please make time for this special presentation.

A treat is in store for us at the Saturday morning brunch. Major Rhonda L. Cornum, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, will bring to us some first-hand experiences she encountered and give her thoughts on women in the military. You will want to register early for this brunch and program. See you in San Francisco.

Elizabeth Collins President-elect

Study reveals GPs question endodontists expertise Two General Interest Sessions at the upcoming annual session in San Francisco will feature key findings from the AAE commissioned national study of the relationship be- tween endodontists and general dentists.

General Interest Session II, Bridge to understanding - what do dentists think of you? (Friday, May 8, 9am-12 noon), will raise some eye-opening points about how your general practitioner views you, your expertise and your relationship. A panel of AAE members will ask questions pertaining to the study and its implications. The audience will also be encouraged to participate.

General Interest Session Ill, Keys to success with referral sources and patients (Friday, May 8, 2-5pm) builds on the morning presentation, focusing on specific relationship-building skills you can put into practice to strengthen your relationships with your referring dentists and patients and enhancing your bottom-line success.
