N W AND A N UN E ENT J Oral Maxillofac Surg 48:224-226.1990 WALTER LORENZ ISSUES CHALLENGE TO MEMBERSHIP Honorary fellow Walter Lorenz, president of Walter Lorenz Surgical Instruments, Inc, Jackson- ville, FL, has challenged the AAOMS membership to reach a $2.5 million goal set for membership pledges to the Research Fund (PEER) of the Edu- cation and Research Foundation for Oral and Max- illofacial Surgery. Deadline to meet the goal is De- cember 31, 1991. Pledges to date total more than $1.6 million. Mr Lorenz has pledged $500,000 to the PEER industry campaign and has agreed to pledge an additional $500,000 to PEER if the membership goal is reached. Members who have already pledged can increase the amount of their pledge and extend the pledge period. Those who have not pledged may obtain a form by contacting Charietta Towns at AAOMS headquarters, 1-800-822-6637. More than 640 mem- bers have made pledges to the Research Fund. HOWMEDICA MAKES PLEDGE TO FOUNDATION RESEARCH FUND Howmedica, a division of Pfizer, is the company to most recently pledge support to the PEER cam- paign, according to John Gray, Honorary Fellow and past trustee and chairman of the Education and Research Foundation Board of Trustees. Howmed- ica's $25,000 pledge increases industry support for PEER to $930,000. Almost $2.6 million has been pledged to the campaign from all sources. As of November 30, 1989, the following companies have made commitments to the PEER Research Fund: Walter Lorenz Surgical Instruments, $500,000; No- belpharma USA, $100,000; Calcitek, $80,000; W.B. Saunders Company, $50,000; Collagen Biomedical, $25,000; Howmedica, $25,000; Interpore Interna- tional, $25,000; Stryker Surgical Corporation, $25,000; Synthes Maxillofacial, $25,000; Treloar and Heisel, $25,000; Ace Surgical Supply Com- pany, $10,000; Boyd Industries, $10,000; C.V. Mosby, $10,000; Quintessence Publishing, $10,000; and Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, $10,000. 1992 HAWAII SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS The 74th Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions of the AAOMS will be held in conjunction with the Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Sur- geons (JSOMS) in Honolulu, HI, September 16-20, 1992. Ajoint planning committee composed of rep- resentatives of both organizations has been ap- pointed to develop the combined portion of the sci- entific program. According to Dr Michael Matzkin, 224 Dr Kanichi Seto AAOMS Vice President, this is a significant further step in improving the international exchange of ideas in the specialty. Members of the specialty from other Pacific rim countries to be invited in- clude Taiwan, Korea, China and Hong Kong, and Malaysia. In 1990 and 1991, an exchange of scientific par- ticipants in the JSOMS and AAOMS meetings is being developed. Fonseca, DMD, Dean of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Phil- adelphia, PA, will receive the 1990 Research Rec- ognition Award, according to committee chairman, James F. A. Omar Abubaker, DMD, PhD, Presbyterian­University Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, will receivethe $20,000 1990 research fellowship for his pro­posed project on "Experimental Studies of theElastic and Collagen Fibers of the TMJ Disc: Influ­ences of Aging and Sex Hormones on the TMJ Discof the Rat."

Two research support grants of $25,000 each willbe awarded in 1990. Recipients of the grants areMichael J. Buckley, DMD, University ofIowa Col­lege of Dentistry, Iowa City, for his proposed proj­ect on "Utilization of Osseointegrated Implants asOrthodontic Anchorage" and to John R. Zuniga,DMD, PhD, University of North Carolina, ChapelHill, for his project on "Characteristics of OrofacialSensorimotor Integrity Subsequent to Lingual andInferior Alveolar Nerve Microsurgical Repair inHumans."

INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS

The Canadian Society of Oral and MaxillofacialSurgeons will meet March 31-ApriI6, 1990 at Whis­tler Resort, British Columbia, Canada.
