WALTER LORENZ ISSUES CHALLENGETO MEMBERSHIP
Honorary fellow Walter Lorenz, president ofWalter Lorenz Surgical Instruments, Inc, Jacksonville, FL, has challenged the AAOMS membershipto reach a $2.5 million goal set for membershippledges to the Research Fund (PEER) of the Education and Research Foundation for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Deadline to meet the goal is December 31, 1991. Pledges to date total more than$1.6 million. Mr Lorenz has pledged $500,000 to thePEER industry campaign and has agreed to pledgean additional $500,000 to PEER if the membershipgoal is reached.
Members who have already pledged can increasethe amount of their pledge and extend the pledgeperiod. Those who have not pledged may obtain aform by contacting Chari etta Towns at AAOMSheadquarters, 1-800-822-6637. More than 640 members have made pledges to the Research Fund.
HOWMEDICA MAKES PLEDGE TO FOUNDATIONRESEARCH FUND
Howmedica, a division of Pfizer, is the companyto most recently pledge support to the PEER campaign, according to John Gray, Honorary Fellowand past trustee and chairman of the Education andResearch Foundation Board of Trustees. Howmedica's $25,000 pledge increases industry support forPEER to $930,000. Almost $2.6 million has beenpledged to the campaign from all sources. As ofNovember 30, 1989, the following companies havemade commitments to the PEER Research Fund:Walter Lorenz Surgical Instruments, $500,000; Nobelpharma USA, $100,000; Calcitek, $80,000; W.B.Saunders Company, $50,000; Collagen Biomedical,$25,000; Howmedica, $25,000; Interpore International, $25,000; Stryker Surgical Corporation,$25,000; Synthes Maxillofacial, $25,000; Treloarand Heisel, $25,000; Ace Surgical Supply Company, $10,000; Boyd Industries, $10,000; C.V.Mosby, $10,000; Quintessence Publishing, $10,000;and Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, $10,000.
1992 HAWAII SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS
The 74th Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessionsof the AAOMS will be held in conjunction with theJapanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (JSOMS) in Honolulu, HI, September 16-20,1992. A joint planning committee composed of representatives of both organizations has been appointed to develop the combined portion of the sci-entific program. According to Dr Michael Matzkin,

AAOMS Vice President, this is a significant furtherstep in improving the international exchange ofideas in the specialty. Members of the specialtyfrom other Pacific rim countries to be invited include Taiwan, Korea, China and Hong Kong, andMalaysia.

COMMITTEE ON RESEARCH ANNOUNCESAWARD WINNERS
The Committee on Research has announced theawarding of one research fellowship and two research support grants, and the conferring of the Research Recognition Award. Recipients were determined at the committee's November 30 meeting.Raymond J. Fonseca, DMD, Dean of the School ofDental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, will receive the 1990 Research Recognition Award, according to committee chairman,James F. Kelly, Farmington Hills, MI. Dr Fonsecawill be recognized for his laboratory research, including that involving allogenic bone graft repair,antenatal surgical wound healing, and the classical

animal studies with Dr William Bell elucidatingbone graft revascularization. In addition, Dr Fonesca's clinical investigation has been highlighted bystudies concerning alveolar cleft grafting, the stability of orthognathic surgery, and the efficacy of various preposthetic surgical interventions.
A. Omar Abubaker, DMD, PhD, PresbyterianUniversity Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, will receivethe $20,000 1990 research fellowship for his proposed project on "Experimental Studies of theElastic and Collagen Fibers of the TMJ Disc: Influences of Aging and Sex Hormones on the TMJ Discof the Rat."
Two research support grants of $25,000 each willbe awarded in 1990. Recipients of the grants areMichael J. Buckley, DMD, University ofIowa College of Dentistry, Iowa City, for his proposed project on "Utilization of Osseointegrated Implants asOrthodontic Anchorage" and to John R. Zuniga,DMD, PhD, University of North Carolina, ChapelHill, for his project on "Characteristics of OrofacialSensorimotor Integrity Subsequent to Lingual andInferior Alveolar Nerve Microsurgical Repair inHumans."

The Canadian Society of Oral and MaxillofacialSurgeons will meet March 31-ApriI6, 1990 at Whistler Resort, British Columbia, Canada.
