NEWS AND EVENTS Awards and Honors... Robert H. Rumler, Brattleboro, VT, Execu- tive Chairman of the Holstein-Friesian Associa- tion of America, was Guest of Honor at the Dairy Shrine Club's 1976 annual meeting. Born and raised on a Pennsylvania dairy farm, Rumler is a 1936 graduate of Pennsylva- nia State University with a Bachelor's de- gree in dairy husband- ry. He then spent nine years as a county agent in Missouri and Penn- sylvania and two years as Director of New Agricultural Products for the DuPont organiza- tion. Rumler pioneered development of uniform sire production and type summaries and has been a leader and long-time proponent of ef- forts to streamline milk marketing in the US. In August, 1975, he was named Executive Chairman of the Holstein-Friesian Association after serving 22 years as Executive Secretary. In his new capacity, he serves as agent of the Board of Directors in policy development, relations with allied organizations on a national and international plane, and as advisor to the present Executive Secretary. Rumler first joined the Association in 1948 as Assistant Executive Secretary and was named Executive Secretary in 1953. In his former posi- tion as chief administrative officer, Rumler maintained close contact with Holstein breeders and various facets of the development of the dairy industry. Appointment... Evans Wright, extension dairyman with the University of Kentucky for the past three years, will join the staff of the American Jersey Cattle Club and National All-Jersey, Inc., as treasurer and superintendent of records, effective Octo- ber 1, 1976. From 1966 to 1973 Wright was on the staff of Michigan State University while doing graduate work in dairy cattle breeding, popula- tion genetics, and extension. He received his undergraduate degree in dairy production man- agement from the Uni- versity of Kentucky. He has authored and coauthored several pub- lications, 4-H bulletins, and a series of articles for Hoard's Dairyman. He has done extensive research in simulated dairy cattle populations and USDA Sire Sum- maries. Wright has served the National Workshop for Genetic Improvement of Dairy Cattle on the Core Committee, as well as serving on the Persistency, Dairyman's Manual, and Account- ing Committees of the Southern Regional Dairy Records Processing Center. Erickson, Waupun, WI, was elected Vice-President, and Bryce Weiker, Tiffin, OH, was elected to the Executive Committee. NAAB leadership was transferred to Boese and Erickson by retiring President David Yoder, Lancaster, PA, and Vice-President Erton Sipher, Gouverneur, NY. Boese is Vice-President of Curtiss Breeding Service, and currently is serving his first term as an NAAB Director. Erickson was re-elected to the Board of Directors prior to his being named Vice-Presi- dent. He is manager of East Central Breeders Association Cooperative and also serves as chairman of the Research Subcommittee. Weiker is Marketing Director of Noba, Inc., and also serves on the NAAB Marketing Com- mittee. In addition to Erickson, newly elected direc- tors to the NAAB Board for three-year terms are Albert Fox, Olivebridge, NY, and Kenneth Young, Sun Prairie, WI. Fox is treasurer of Eastern A. 1. Cooperative, and Young is Direc- tor of Beef Cattle Breeding for American Breeders Service.

• The Indian Society for Nuclear Tech- niques in Agriculture and Biology will hold an International Symposium on Improving Crop and Animal Productivity by Nuclear and Allied Techniques from February 1 to 4, 1977, in New Delhi, India. The symposium will be multi- disciplinary in nature to ensure maximum par- ticipation of interdisciplinary groups with a view to bringing out new concepts for the solution of specific problems.

Topics will include: 1) production physiol- ogy of cereals, food legumes, and oil seeds in relation to photosynthetic systems and nutrient utilization; 2) efficient use of fertilizers in dif- ferent farming systems; 3) water resources in relation to crop productivity; 4) integrated ap- proach for pest and disease control, including breeding for resistant varieties; sterility tech- nique; epidemiology of seed-borne pathogens; efficient use of pesticides and study of pesti- cide residues in relation to animal and human health; 5) management of animal resources in- cluding fisheries; nonprotein nitrogen utiliza- tion; utilization of feed nutrients for milk and meat synthesis and problems related to breed- ing and reproduction.
