For Our Friends and Clients!

May 2013

Winter has finally let all of us out of its cold, dark clutches and bright warm spring has finally arrived. Hopefully, the next month of weather is great for all our Ontario farmers as they plant their crops. After over a year of hard work Una and I are set to launch our first insurance book. The title of our book is "24 Things You Need To Know To

Protect Your ASSetts”. This book is designed to make insurance easier to understand for individuals, families, business owners and farmers. We will be launching our book officially in June and will have more details in the next edition of our newsletter. All the profits from our book will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

In April Una and I went to Orlando Florida to an Insurance Mastermind meeting. We spent two intense 12 hour long work days behind closed doors, with 18 of the top brokers and agents from across North America, sharing ideas and learning from each other. Una and I returned with 30 new ideas to help us serve our clients better and we are excited to implement them as soon as possible. The first night after the business was done we got to attend an NBA basketball game and watch the last place Orlando Magic play the Chicago Bulls. The high-light of the game to us was getting a picture taken on the arena floor after the game.

As mother’s day approaches we leave you with one last thought. “ You’re going to lose people in your life and

Insurance 101

Umbrella Insurance

Coverage not just for a

Rainy Day What is umbrella insurance coverage? Simply put, umbrella coverage is extra liability insurance you may add to that already included in your existing auto and homeowners’ policies. Most homeowners’ or auto insurance policies provide liability insurance, up to certain limits, for the purpose of offering financial protection in case you are sued for some kind of wrongdoing.

Should you be involved in a lawsuit in which the judgment is more than the limits on your standard insurance policies, your umbrella policy would typically take over when the liability coverage in your standard policies is exhausted.

Umbrella insurance is designed to cover a number of scenarios. • It may provide additional coverage for property damage in the event you harm or destroy someone else’s property. • The policy may cover the medical bills of someone you injure in an accident where these exceed the limits on your existing policy. • In the event of a judgment against you in a lawsuit, an umbrella policy may cover all or part of the judgment, as well as attorney fees. Do you need an umbrella insurance policy? It may be a good idea to sit down with us and review your cur-rent liability overage in order to an-swer that question.

Do You

Suffer

From

Chronic

Migraines

The intense throbbing pain of an occasional migraine is bad — especialy when accompanied by nausea, vomiting, blurred vision or sensitivity to light and sound. Imagine getting one of those doozy headaches most days: That’s the reality of chronic migraines.

A recent survey of 2,600 migraine sufferers found more than 40% have the chronic kind. The same survey reported 38% of people with chronic migraines lost a job because of their condition.

When migraines are chronic, they strike at least 15 days a month for at least three months; on at least eight of those days, patients have symptoms or respond to migraine-specific treatment.

Here are a few tips for managing your migraines:

Go easy on coffee. High caffeine consumption could trigger an occasional migraine; it also increases

your chances of developing chronic headaches, especially in women and those under 40.

Prescription drugs can help. Onabotulinumtoxin A (trade name Botox) is FDA-approved for chronic migraines. A recent research review in the Journal of the American Medical

Association showed that chronic sufferers who used the injections averaged two to three fewer headaches a month; patients with occasional migraines or chronic tension headaches had no change. Other prescriptions for chronic migraines: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), pain medication and migraine-specific drugs. Doctors also may suggest antidepressants or anti-seizure drugs.

Pins and Needles. Give Acupuncture a try. Studies show that this ancient technique can help reduce the frequency and intensity of chronic headaches, maybe as much or more so than medication.

Want Better Seats Once

You’re at The Ball Game?

We’ve got an app for that

coming SOON!! I read this article and had to pass it on. Finally an app I can really use.

Ushers call them "seat pirates": people who buy cheap tickets to sporting events, then scavenge empty seats closer to the playing field once the game begins. For years these squatters have jumped around arenas and stadiums, driving sports franchises nuts as they undercut the value of the higher-price tickets. But a new app from Santa Monica, Calif.-based Pogoseat could enable those franchises to turn the pirates into upstand-ing ticket holders--and generate additional revenue along the way.

Co-founder Evan Owens explains that unlike third-party services that sell discounted tickets prior to tipoff, the Pogoseat app is designed for use by fans already at an event. "Inside the arena, people may want better seats for a multitude of reasons--to sit with friends, get away from a drunk, get out of the weather or be closer to the action," he says, admitting that the idea came to him a few years ago after he was caught pirating seats at a baseball game. "Once you switch, the last thing you want is to sit there and constantly worry, Are they going to kick me out?"

Here's how it works. A fan logs into the app, which determines through geolocation the user's exact position within the venue, then displays a map of available seats and prices. After selecting new seats, users can pay for the upgrade through their smartphones. (Depending on the score or amount of time left in a game, the fee may actually be lower than the difference in ticket price.) The app then generates a new e-ticket to show to ushers. Pogoseat takes an undisclosed cut of the transaction.

"In 60 seconds you can have a new seat," says Brandon Schneider, vice president of ticket sales and services for the NBA's Golden State Warriors, who have partnered with the app this season. "It's a win-win for everyone."For Owens and co-founder Abel Cuskelly, Pogoseat is a natural extension of their lifelong love of sports. So far Pogoseat has $500,000 in funding--including $125,000 of Owens' money--and launched a second funding round at the end of 2012. Armed with the new dough, the duo aims to add 10 to 15 teams from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS and NCAA to the service. Owens envisions the app eventually being used at concerts and theatrical performances as well. "Anything with tickets and the potential for empty seats is fair game," .

Are You At Risk

for Diabetes? Studies show, about 79 million Americans have prediabetes.

That means they have blood sugar that’s higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 — at least not yet.

One long-term study found that 11% of people with prediabetes develop the full-blown disease each year during the average three years of follow-up, reports the American Diabetes Association. Other research shows that without intervention, prediabetes probably will become type 2 in 10 years or less.

That progression is not inevitable: Last year, scientists in Colorado found that people with prediabetes who lowered their blood sugar to normal levels — even briefly — were 56% less likely to reach type 2 levels.

If you have prediabetes, here are four steps to help prevent or delay a diabetes diagnosis:

Lose 7% of your body weight. That equates to about 15 pounds if the scale reads 200. Dropping that small percentage, coupled with regular moderate physical

activity, has been shown to lower the risk of developing type 2 by close to 60%.

Exercise 30 minutes five days a week. Whether you do the 30 minutes in one shot or in 10-minute sessions, the benefit is the same. Choose moderate-level exercises, such as brisk walking, playing tennis or lifting weights. Activities such as scrubbing floors works, too. If you can talk but not sing during the activity, you’re working out at a moderate intensity.

Ask about medications. In some cases, prediabetes raises the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. Your doctor may prescribe medication to control your glucose levels and keep cholesterol and blood pressure in check.

Know your numbers. To see if your prediabetes is improving, have your blood sugar checked regularly. A fasting blood sugar of 100 to 125 mg/dl suggests prediabetes; 126 mg/dl or above is diabetes; and below 100 is normal. Other tests, including glucose tolerance and A1C, also are used to monitor blood sugar.

Maggie here, Yippee Looks Like Spring is Here! This means anyone with a pool will want to get it opened. Here are some tips on opening your pool: • Remove the leaves and debris from the pool cover with a leaf net and/or skimmer net. • Remove cover. Try to minimize the amount of water and/or debris that gets into the

pool water. • Lay out pool cover and sweep or brush off any remaining debris • Empty the water out of any water tubes you may have. On above ground pools,

deflate the air pillow. Clean off items and fold properly and store away. • Unplug all piping, both in the pool and at the filter system area. • Re-attach any deck equipment you have such as ladders, rails, diving boards, etc. • Lubricate all bolts on the dive board, ladders and/or rails. This will prevent them from rusting over the

summer. • Re-install the skimmer baskets and any return jet eyeball fittings. If an above ground pool, you may have to

re-attach the actual skimmer and return fittings onto the pool (depending on how the pool was closed). If an above ground pool, also hookup any hoses from the skimmer and return jets to the pump and filter.

• Hook up pump, filter and any other additional equipment you might have (booster pumps, spa equipment, waterfall circulation pumps, heaters, etc.).

• Turn on the power to the pool system. You may have to turn on the circuit breaker from the house. Start and check system. Check for leaks or drips. Make sure pump primes properly. Check for proper flow. Backwash the filter thoroughly.

• Shock the pool with any chlorine shock product. This is available in liquid or granular form. You want to add enough to raise the chlorine level of the pool to at least 3.0 ppm (darker yellow color in most liquid test kits).

• If you use granular shock, do not throw it directly into the pool ! • If your pool water is relatively clear, accurately test your water for chlorine, PH and Alkalinity levels. • Let pool run for at least 24 hours. Vacuum any debris out of the bottom. Retest water. Do not go into pool

until water is crystal clear and chlorine level is under 2.0 ppm (medium yellow color on most test kits) We have Shawn from Blue Horizon Pools open our pool for us and he does a great job! If you have any questions or concerns always best to call your specialized pool and spa company to assist you with your questions and concerns. Now all you have to do is enjoy the pool!!
