His five-year-old son Samuel then bravely read out a letter to his father. ‘‘To daddy ... you are in the sky. I miss you,’’ he said. But sombre tears were turned to smiles and snatches of laughter when his brother-in-law and mate Rod Godden, who is also in the NT Police, read the eulogy and told Brett to ensure he ‘‘cracks a Pure Blonde with the big fella’’ when watching his beloved NRL team St George from the heavens above. Police formed a guard of honour outside the church as the hearse was led slowly down Smith St by a riderless horse. With Brett’s police hat and medals clutched tightly to her chest and with her brother, Sgt Godden, by her side, Amee then walked behind the procession, with the 700-strong police members in attendance closely behind her. Police chaplain Jim Boland said he hoped Sgt Meredith’s death would change community attitudes towards the police. The father-of-five would have celebrated his 40th birthday on January 31.
