The 86,000-square-foot office facility houses 190 employees and operates as a Center of Excellence to demonstrate Nordson's capabilities to customers in a variety of industries, including appliance, automotive, container non-wovens, electronics, furniture and wood assembly, life science, packaging, powder and liquid painting, product assembly, and semiconductors.

"These investments strongly support our long-term growth strategies and initiatives in the fast-growing markets of the Asia-Pacific region," said Bradley C. Davis, Asia-Pacific Group vice president. "The strength of our growing and experienced local organization in these areas, coupled with the world-class capabilities of our new facilities, allows Nordson to better serve our customers worldwide." In 2008 alone, Nordson invested nearly half a million dollars in global upgrades to its Industrial oating customer demonstration labs.

Evonik Industries has begun further expansion of its worldwide production capacity for thermoplastic methacrylic resins by completing th e industrial equipment installation at its new Shanghai Chemical Industry Park location in China. The new facility promises to be one of the world largest integrated production sites for methacrylates, according to a company statement.

The products manufactured at the new plant will be used in industrial coatings, such as marine and container paints and plastics coatings,

but will also act as binders in printing inks and ceramic transfer lacquers. "This new generation of solid binders will improve the performance of the final coating products," noted Dr. Dirk Hohler of Evonik, who is responsible for the company's coating resins product line. Evonik expects the plant will go into operation during the second half of2009.

Columbia Chemical has announced the completion of its technical support center with the recent addition

of a fully operational pilot plating line. The II-station line enables technical support personnel to better understand problems encountered in the field and to provide customers with customized solutions. Also, customers now have the ability to see how the latest technologies can meet their needs prior to actually installing new processes at their facilities. "Our new pilot plating capability brings a lot of value to our customers," said Rick Holland, vice president of technology. "Tech Support

Mitch Opalich and John Forrey of Cleveland Plastic Fabricators and Suppliers, Inc., worked closely with Columbia Chemical personnel to

engineer and custom fabricate the plating line. During the design process, factors regarding rectifiers, heaters, filtration, agitation, ventilation and ease of maintenance were all considered in providing safety and efficiency as well as replicating the complexities of large-scale metal finishing. NEW VENTURES Thomas Swan & Co., Ltd., has partnered with Cambridge (U.K) research and technology organization TWI to

commercialize their patented Vito lane technology- a novel, lower-cost manufacturing route for silsesquioxanes that allows a high level of functional versatility. The aim is to accelerate the introduction of affordable hybrid silsesquioxane resins to enhance dle performance of coatings, adhesives, and bulk polymers. These organic-inorganic resins can be tailored to offer a range of functions to coatings, adhesives, and bulk polymers such as improved abrasion resistance, increased resistance to heat and solvents, and better barrier properties. The technology is being actively investigated for industrial applications such as durable coatings for white goods and consumer electronics, hard optically clear coatings for DVDs and CDs, flexible packaging, and novel low-viscosity adhesives.
