Insisting that “materials” have a voice of their own, Sandra Menefee Taylor uses common matter like salt, flour, and soil that refer to the body, food, and domesticity to reconsider / re-present timeless images drawn from lace patterns and ancient tapestries. Textiles are integral to memories of comfort; the feel, smell, and colors evoke memories associated with loved ones. She considers human history to be most accurately recorded in the intimate fabrics and materials which we as humans choose to hold in our hands or wear against our bodies.

Sandra Menefee Taylor is a Minnesota-based nationally recognized mixed media visual artist. Her work is in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; El Archivo, Mexico City; Walker Art Center; Minneapolis Institute of Art; Franklin Furnace, NYC; Artists Book Works, Chicago; Minnesota Historical Society; The Minnesota Center for Book Arts; Carleton College; and Weisman Art Museum.

Textile Center exhibitions are supported in part with funds from the Joan Mondale Endowment.

The World's Largest Textile Garage Sale Returns April 9, 2016!

When I first came on staff at Textile Center in 2012, I was given the responsibility of helping to run the Garage Sale. I must admit, I was a bit daunted by the prospect; all everyone kept saying was that the only way to comprehend it was to actually experience it. With three under my belt now, I can honestly report that this epic, exhilarating—even a bit overwhelming—event is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

The genesis of the Garage Sale underscores our founders' brilliance. When the building at 3000 University Ave we now know as Textile Center had been purchased but not yet renovated, an idea was hatched to utilize the cavernous (and very dirty) space to fundraise for the capital campaign. The Garage Sale was born. The first staffer, Elinor Auge, told me the Liaison Committee worked out the details of what was originally called the "Biggest Textile Garage Sale Ever," and even in its first year, a long line of shoppers snaked throughout the building. With each successive year the Garage Sale grew until it was bursting at the seams. So, in 2011 it was moved to the U of M's ReUse Center, where there's an actual warehouse-worth of space to pile high with yarn, fabric, notions, tools, machines, equipment, kits, patterns, magazines, books, and more.

Now, 2,000 people participate in an event powered by more than 200 volunteers. The Garage Sale is the very definition of recycling, with hundreds of donations of unfinished materials to be resold or donated, instead of ending up in a landfill. The event offers a low cost way for students, artists, and makers to buy materials, and for guilds and groups to purchase what they need for their year-round charity work. All proceeds fund Textile Center, keeping this national center for fiber art vital.

Come this year to donate, volunteer, and shop. It’s so much fun, and you really must experience it to believe it! —Jenny Jones, Textile Center staff and Garage Saler
