"Our Heritage" is the theme for 1990 AAO meeting in Washington, D.C.

No place could be more fitting than our nation's capital as the AAO celebrates the 90th anniversary of the establishment of orthodontics as a specialty. Be- cause ours is the oldest certifying board in dentistry (and the second in all of medicine and dentistry), with a host of distinguished and inspiring pioneers in our specialty, William Stutts, president of the AAO, has chosen "Our Heritage" as the meeting theme. Coinci- dentally, our last meeting with a strong international representation was 29 years ago in Washington. This time the largest number of essayists in our history will be on the program, with the greatest number of distin- guished foreign speakers we have ever had.

Dr. Stutts and Co-Chairmen O. B. Vaughan and Arthur Reed have arranged a program with tremendous breadth and depth to challenge both our members and U.S. Supreme Court

the large number of orthodontists expected to attend from abroad. Clinical relevance, research validation, pragmatism in today's changing world, and a rededi- cation to the high principles and ethics of our ortho- dontic pioneers make this a meeting we cannot afford to miss. The social program and tours are dedicated to helping us celebrate our proud national and professional heritage.

Washington D.C. at cherry blossom time is a pop- ular place to be. Hotel space may well be at a premium. Register early! Don't be disappointed. Further details concerning this landmark meeting will appear in the February and March issues of the AJOIDO.

T. M. Graber becomes first American orthodontist to receive honorary doctorate in Sweden

T. M. Graber, Editor-in-Chief of the AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL OR- THOPEDICS, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Gfteborg this past October. The award was presented to him formally by Professor Birgit Thi- lander, chairperson of the Orthodontic Department at the prestigious school in Sweden.

Dr. Graber, who has been immersed in the specialty of orthodontics for more than 40 years and has written, taught, and lectured widely on the subject, is no stranger to special honors, having been recognized for his out- standing achievements numerous times by a host of

dental societies and universities. However, the recog- nition from Gfteborg is particularly significant since Dr. Graber is the first American orthodontist to receive an honorary doctorate in Sweden.

Dr. Graber, a St. Louis native, received his dental training at Washington University. He went on to earn an MSD in orthodontics and PhD in anatomy from Northwestern University, where he focused on cranio- facial anomalies, the temporomandibular joint, and growth and development. His academic career flour- ished through the years with a professorial post at Northwestern's dental school and later at the Univer-

Birgit Thilander, University of GSteborg, with T. M. Graber, recipient of honorary doctorate.

sity of Chicago, where he served in several capacities, including founder and chair of the school's orthodontic department. Dr. Graber also has been a visiting pro- fessor at the University of Michigan.

In addition to holding down a successful private practice, Dr. Graber has found the time to write 14 textbooks in eight languages, which have become sta- ples at orthodontic schools in the United States and abroad. His Orthodontics, Prhzciples and Practice has enjoyed steady popularity and is considered one of the most influential and important books in the field. His hundreds of articles, abstracts, and reviews continue to be cited by researchers and authors worldwide and serve as a testament to his prodigious work in temporoman- dibular joint disturbances, diagnosis and therapy, and magnetic forces.

Dr. Graber has been a sought-after lecturer, known for his information-packed courses and dynamic ora- tory. He has delivered talks to orthodontic associations throughout the world and has been selected to present,

among other coveted speaking awards, the George Wel- lington Grieve Memorial Lecture, the Holly Broadbent Memorial Lecture, the Salzmann Memorial Lecture, the Strang Memorial Lecture, the Mershon Memorial Lec- ture, the Wylie Memorial Lecture, the Benno Lischer Lecture, and the Northcroft Memorial Lecture.

A tireless professional who thrives on juggling a multitude of responsibilities at once, Dr. Graber has been an inspiration to many orthodontists who look to him for knowledge and guidance. Of course, he remains a source of admiration to his loved ones as well. His wife, Professor Doris Graber, his five grown children, and his many grandchildren view him as a leader not only in the realm of orthodontics, but also as a central figure at home, where he has dedicated himself to his family with the same amount of love, care, and enthu- siasm he has demonstrated to those with whom he has worked during his satisfying and noteworthy career.

AAO president Wiltiam F. Stutts receives Martin Dewey Award

William F. Stutts, president of the American As- sociation of Orthodontists, has received the Martin Dewey Award from the Southwestern Society of Ortho- dontists. The award, which is the highest recognition offered by the Southwestern Society, is named in honor of the eminent orthodontist and teacher who served as

the first editor of the AI~IERICAN JOURNAL OF ORTHO- DONTICS. Although the Dewey Award from the South- western Society is a particularly special honor, it is not the first Dr. Stutts has received from the society. He also was given its Dr. Albert Westfall Award in 1980. Dr. Westfall was the first chairman of the Orth-

Left to right, Jim Shuffield, Tom King, and William F. Stutts.

odontic Department at the University of Texas in Houston.

Dr. Stutts is himself an esteemed leader in ortho- dontics who has served his specialty in numerous ca- pacities. He is a past-president of the Texas Association of Orthdontists, the Southwestern Society of Ortho- dontists, the Texas Section of the American Society of Dentistry for Children, and the college of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. In addition to affiliations with local, state, and national dental soci- eties, he is a member of the European Society of Ortho- dontists and the Royal Society of Medicine, London. He also is a life member of the G.V. Black Society of Northwestern University Dental School.

A popular lecturer, Dr. Stutts has made presenta- tions throughout the United States, Europe, China, and

Mexico. He is known for his engaging talks on com- puterization and photography in orthodontics. Dr. Stutts is also credited with developing devices to collimate beams for projection in cephalometric radiology and to obtain four lateral images on one panographic film at a target distance of 60 inches.

Dr. Stutts is a native of Tuscaloosa, Ala. He grad- uated from the University of Alabama and the North- western University Dental School. He served as a cap- tain in the Dental Corps in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1955. For the last 34 years, he has had a thriving orthodontic practice in Dallas, where he resides with his wife Marilyn, and has taught at Baylor College of Dentistry and Children's Medical Center.

Hillcrest Foundation awards major grant to college

Baylor College of Dentistry has been informed that the Dallas-based Hillcrest Foundation, which was es- tablished by Mrs. W. W. Caruth, Sr., has approved a grant in the amount of $400,000 toward the funding of the Dr. Robert E. Gaylord Endowed Chair in Orthodon- tics and the establishment of an interdisciplinary center for the study of craniofacial growth abnormalities.

The Gaylord Endowed Chair will maintain a pro- fessorship in abnormal facial growth and development; the interdisciplinary center will establish a cooperative effort between specialties to develop optimal treatment strategies for patients with developmental abnormali- ties. This effort will depend on more accurate cranio- facial growth evaluations and predictions, which will be derived from analyses and comparisons of normative data gathered from collaborators in several countries. The data will comprise the largest data base for cra- niofacial growth ever assembled, establishing Baylor

as a leading international center for the study of normal and abnormal craniofacial growth and development.

Robert E. Gaylord was instrumental in organizing the first class in graduate orthodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry in 1961, and has served on the faculty since that time, including 14 years as chairman. Through his efforts, Dr. Gaylord has contributed to developing one of the most respected orthodontic pro- grams in the country.

Dr. Gaylord has served organized dentistry in many leadership roles, highlighted by a term as president of the American Association of Orthodontists. Among his numerous honors and awards is membership in the Bay- lor College of Dentistry Hall of Fame. Dr. Gaylord earned his DDS in 1937 and his master's in orthodontics in 1939 from Northwestern University Dental School. He has maintained a private practice in Dallas for 48 years.

Drs. Riedel and Moffett to retire at University of Washington

The Orthodontic Department of the University of Washington School of Dentistry announces the retire- ment of Richard Riedel, past director of the American Board of Orthodontics, Ketcham Award recipient, and past department chairman (1965-1975). Dr. Riedel held every faculty position from instructor to professor emer-

itus and served as acting dean (1980-1981). He taught in the dental school for more than 40 years and has the longest term of continuous service (since 1949) among dental school faculty.

Benjamin Moffett also has announced his retirement from active teaching to allow him to write a series of
