War Dogs is an organization based in Chicago who’s sole mission is to pair up Veterans returning home with dogs who can become their lifelong friend and service dog. Many Veterans have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and/or Traumatic Brain Injury. Through War Dogs, the service dog becomes the veteran’s partner in their struggle to achieve confidence, reconnect with their loved ones, and resume community activities. Foster2Home has now partnered with War Dogs to find trainable dogs with good personalities that fits the needs of War Dogs. In the past year, F2H has donated about a dozen dogs to become War Dogs. A very, very generous youngster...This is Andy. For his birthday, Andy asked for money. Money...that
he could then give to Foster 2 Home to help with the dogs. This past Christmas, he did the same thing. Andy and his family also have saved 2 of F2H biggest dogs, Big Boy and Jake.
Thank you, Andy...a little guy with a big, big heart.
GONE TOO SOON
A story from DJ’s Foster Mom:
From day 1, whenever he had to go potty, he would methodically run around in a big circle 15-20 times before finally slowing down to do his business. For the first month or so, he didn't want to walk around much, preferring to jump up to sit on his crate! So we finally put his bed on top of the crate. He liked being on top of things in general, instead of the floor. Once he even jumped 2 feet high to sit in an open file drawer - filled with paperclips and pen and pencils! Gradually he got comfortable enough with us to prefer our laps to curl up on :)

CHICAGO MAY BAN PUPPY MILL SALES
Chicago City Clerk Susan Mendoza recently introduced a proposal that would only allow the sale of cats and dogs from city/county shelters, humane societies, or rescue facilities. The main goal of the proposal would be to increase adoptions and reduce the number of euthanized strays. In 2013, a dozen Chicago-area pet stores were identified as being involved with puppy mill operations.
A petition is available online to support the measure, which will next be considered at a February 26 hearing.

Steamed (or boiled) chicken (without skin and drained of fat) and white rice is a tried-and-true remedy for upset stomachs. I like to think of it as the soothing equivalent of hot tea and toast for humans. This is often called the Bland Diet, since you shouldn’t add anything except water to the chicken and rice concoction to whet a dog’s appetite, and even then only if your dog hesitates to eat it (a little water will create a broth). Variations on the recipe for dogs with vomiting or diarrhea:
THE BLAND DIETMix half a cup of steamed
chicken or cooked ground beef, plus white rice (it’s binding), for every twenty pounds of a dog’s body weight every day. This portion should be divided into two to four meals.
FOR DIARRHEA:Give the dog only water for
twenty-four hours, then follow The Bland Diet for one to two days.
Gradually switch back to the dog’s regular diet over the next day or so.
FOR VOMITING:Fast the dog completely (food
and water) for twelve hours after vomiting. Once there is no more vomiting, give the dog water for the next twelve hours and follow The Bland Diet.
MIALittle Mia is doing great after her 3rd knee joint surgery. Mia’s specialist put in some permanent "stuff" and trimmed some tissue to stabilize the leg in hopes this will not be affect the supportive tissues. Mia is "One in a Million". She is a wonderful dog, a fun little one that gets along with everyone. Mia is now on 12 weeks total rest.

ZIMAZima is a deaf girl rescued in February 2013. Zima still has issues greeting dogs and attending classes, but she is making a world of progress. Zima also does NoseWork and is great at it. In March, she will be going for her NW1 title. In November, she also received her Canine Good Citizen award.
