“...God declares that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” (Acts 2:17) John Lennon wrote a song in 1971 called “Imagine.” After all these years, this song is still played on the radio and is a favorite for many. The main re-frain for the song that everyone can probably sing in their head, or even aloud, says, “Imagine all the people…” John Lennon wrote this song about a dream for peace and well-being for all people. Lennon’s dream was to live in a world where there is no hunger or greed, but in a world that lives as one. Imagine all the people… Many of us are dreamers like Lennon. We dream of a day when the world will live as one. We dream about what our lives may look like in 5 or 10 years. We dream about what our children will do in this world with their lives. We dream about the big house or the cushiony job or about not having to worry about money. We dream big; that is part of what makes us who we are. Well, the same is true for the Church. At Advent we dream about what Advent may look like in 5 or 10 years. We dream about our children growing up in this Church and continuing in the faith. We dream about new small groups and ministries starting. We dream about having two services again. We dream of God at work in this place blessing our efforts. We dream about visitors coming and God’s church growing while saying, “Imagine all the people…” It is nice to dream dreams, and we would be lost without dreaming. However, we also know that if we want our dreams and hopes to come true, there is a lot of hard work to be done, all under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. June brings with it the season of Pentecost, the birth of the CHURCH! We begin with Pentecost Sunday and we hear the lesson from Acts where the Spirit moves over the people and the church is given breath and life. It is the birthday of the church. We then hear Peter addressing the crowd and reminding them about what the prophet Joel had spoken. Peter in his speech was speaking about a dream. A dream for God’s people. A dream that people will dream dreams and see visions. A dream about what God’s church will look like because of what Jesus Christ has done. Peter was essentially saying what Lennon was saying—”Imagine all the people…”. In order for Peter’s dream about the Church to happen he now had to go and keep telling people about God in Christ Jesus. He had to work hard. The rest of Acts shows the Church coming into being through the work of the disciples and followers of Jesus by going out and spreading the good news. The people of God went, but they also did something else. Through all the joys and triumphs, trials and tribulations, the people of God were doing something in Acts. There is one word that appears in Acts more than anywhere else in the Bible. The word is pray. The people of God in the early Church went, and along the way they continually prayed. They moved from imagining all the people to going, telling, and praying for all the people. We believe that this is what we are called to do and be reminded of this Pentecost season. We are a people who dream. We are a people who pray. We are a people who go and tell the story to others. When we do this, we are the Church at work in this world. Imagine that… In Christ’s love, Pastor Jason and Pastor Andrea

& Events& Events Fellowship Coffee Hour We will continue throughout the summer. Sign up in the Narthex to provide goodies to go with our coffee. Join us following the 9:15am worship service in the Fellowship Hall! Advent Women’s Breakfast The women of Advent will provide breakfast on Father’s Day, June 15th, and will resume in the Fall on the first Sunday of each month. Catch the Spirit Dinner There will not be a “Catch the Spirit” Dinner in June or July. Enjoy your summer! Book Club Advent’s Book Club will not be meeting during Summer months. Enjoy your summer! Augusta’s Independence Day Celebration Bring the whole family to the Augusta Commons on Friday, July 4th and partake in an array of activities to keep you busy all afternoon and into the evening: live performers, food & craft vendors, children’s area with games & inflatables, and a spectacular fireworks show just after dark! Columbia County’s Independence Day Celebration Beginning at 2:00pm, come to the Evans Towne Center Park to enjoy the festivities, including music by the Ft. Gordon Army Signal Corp Band and fireworks at dark. Family Promise (Interfaith) - July 13-20. Next month we come upon another chance to serve homeless families through our commitment to Interfaith. It has been only 3 months since the last time and sometimes we dread asking for help. Many times it only involves 1/2 to 1 hour, such as helping to set up, unloading the truck on Sunday afternoon, or helping to make up the beds for the families. It is easy to bring things like cereal, eggs, milk, bread, or fruit ahead of the Sunday they arrive. We have dinners divided into preparing the meal or dessert. Overnight involves a little more time, but it is so needed. Many people helping make the load lighter. Look for the sign-up board in the Narthex this June, and sign up and share the joy of all the blessings God has given us to serve.
Southeastern Synod Assembly Members of the congregations from Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama & Mississippi
will gather for the annual assembly of the synod starting on Friday, May 30th,
and continuing through Sunday, June 1st in Chattanooga, TN. Those attending from Advent
are Pastor Jason & Pastor Andrea, as well as Jared and Kristina Fischer. Please remember
them and all those attending this annual assembly. Pray for safety in travel, and for a wise,
cooperative, and mission minded spirit for this gathering.
The latter half of May was a busy time for our ministry—on May 18th we recognized our Sunday School teachers with a thank you for their service and dedication, and for their willingness to return next year to continue their teaching ministry. We also recognized our high school graduate, Emily Jimenez.
Planning for VBS—”Weird Animals”—has begun. Sarah Logemann has been very busy getting spon-sors and volunteers, organizing Saturday work days to paint props, gathering supplies—cudos to her for a great start! Come join us—it will be an awesome week! If you are unable to come for the morn-ing VBS, come help with the Saturday painting sessions—also great fun!
VBS—June 23-27, 2014, from 9:00am to 12:00noon. Sign up to help our or register to attend via our website: www.adventaugusta.org. VBS staff training will be on Satur-day, June 7th at 9:30am. Decorating will be on Saturday, June 21st at 9:30am, with final set-up on June 22nd after the morn-ing worship service. We need your help! Contact Sarah Loge-mann for more information or to help out.
Summer Sunday School classes for children ages 3 to 6th grade began on May 25th, and will con-tinue through August 17th. Sister Barbara Lee has developed a curriculum focusing on animals in the Bible. Jamie Sadenwasser has organized the summer sessions and found teachers and assistants for each week. Thank you both for your dedication and hard work!
Coffee and refreshments will be available in the Fellowship Hall. Parents—we invite you to take a cup of coffee and join the adult class.
Adult Summer Sunday School—The period of exile for Israel was moving toward an end. After all those years of captivity, did Israel still have hope in all of God’s promises? This Bible study of Ezra-Nehemiah will begin June 1 at 10:30am. Thank you to Pastor Jim Glander for your willingness to lead this study!
The Pastor’s Bible Study classes will continue on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 10am and Thursdays at 6:30pm.
On June 8th we will confirm 10 youth and celebrate with a potluck meal following the service. Please check the Sign-Up Central board to sign up to bring a dish to share, and come join the celebration.
We look forward to the Fall Sunday School kick-off on September 7th with Rally Day and “God’s Work—Our Hands” service day!
I have enjoyed leading the Parish Ed ministry these past 10 years, and would like to extend a heart-felt thank you for Pastors Andrea and Jason for their support and encouragement this past year, and to Sarah Logemann for agreeing to step in to lead this ministry. Thanks also to all who have taught over the years, and to former ministry chair, Marcy Jimenez, who has always been a source of sup-port and information—this ministry’s strength comes from all of you!

Property Ministry The Property Ministry meets on a monthly basis, the first Saturday of the month at 9:00am. After a short meeting, needed projects are done by members of the board. NOTE: Members of the congregation are welcome to borrow items from the church (i.e., tables or chairs), but please coordinate with the office when doing so. This will preclude several people planning on using the same items at the same time, and allow us to keep track of who has what and how many. Thanks! Gary Lawrence, Property Ministry Chair
Summer Sunday School has started! Parents—You can go get a cup of coffee
in the fellowship hall, or attend Pastor’s Jim adult Sunday School class,
while your children have Sunday School from 10:30am to 11:00am. We’re
using animal stories from the Bible to learn about God and His love for us.
Summer Sunday School will occur on these dates:
June 1, 15, 29
July 13, 20, 27
August 3, 10, 16

Music Notes Summer Music Series
Calling all musicians! The Chancel Choir and Handbell Choir will be on a well-deserved vacation during this summer. Thanks for all of their hard work! But I would still like to have special music each Sunday during the summer. And that's where you come in. If you would be interested in singing a solo, a duet, or playing an instrument, please let me know. I would like to work out a schedule so that we have some kind of anthem/solo/instrumental piece each Sunday this sum-mer. This is the time to use your talents for God's glory! Please contact me at the church office. ~Ginny
