LUTHERAN CHURCH

The Walk MONTHLY+ October, 2016

WLLC,

Welcome to our larger MONTHLY version of "The Walk!" At the start of each month, we'll send out a larger, longer

more detailed eNewsletter which contains important announcements for the whole month! Each week thereafter,

we'll send a shorter "The Walk Weekly" with more timely announcements. Enjoy!

NEWS FROM SACELELorant Kajcsa writes: "Hello. It [his theological examination] went pretty well. I will be a baby priest for one year near Sibiu in a little village, Oltszakadat, because there is no priest who could take the congregation there and I am the oldest one from the theological students. My father was a priest there in his first 7 years (19891996). It is a small congregation; it has 110 souls. They

had no priest for the last 10 years. Only an old retired priest went there every weekend. But I will live there for one year so I hope I will get some things done. I hope I will do good and from next year I will go back to study. Thank you for caring for us and for everything. With love, Lorant :) "

“To everything turn, turn turn, There is a season, turn

turn turn,And a time to every purpose under heaven.“

- The Byrds

Greetings Saints of WLLC!

It’s timely, isn’t it? That song seems to pop into my head as the seasons turn. For some

reason more often in the fall than in any other turning of the seasons.

No matter, the seasons are definitely changing! AND…. It seems as though our seasons

in our community are turn, turn turning as well! Things are stirring in this place and just

like the crisp fall air and the changing of the leaves, the stirring seems to bring a new

energy and sense of life with it.

Last month we walked alongside a homeless family and I watched as many of you

became taken with the plight of our neighbors in need. The social ministry team is

already on some new ideas and stirrings of their own to respond to this turning of

seasons in our lives of service. Stay tuned!

In the last few months, we’ve noticed a lot of new faces stopping in to experience our

community in worship. If you’re one of those faces, we’re so glad you are here and hope

deeply that you feel welcome in this place. If you’re not one of those new faces, please

do feel encouraged to notice them! Welcome them! And… wonder at what it is about

Spirit and Spirit’s presence that might be stirring in this new turn of events. It could be a

fleeting turn, it could be a firmer turn. We’re not sure. But we are sure that we are called

to be a welcome place for all…. And we continue to be!

These turnings and stirrings in our community seem to be right on pointe with this year’s

theme for worship and life at West Linn Lutheran. You may have noticed the new

bulletins, or the new circular graphic?

This coming year until summer 2017 we’ll be walking with the idea of “Circles of Living…

Circles of Life” and connecting the turning of life’s seasons with the turning of the church

calendar seasons AND with the turning of our own circles occupied in the course of a

worship service. To everything a season, to everything a circle, to everything a moment

where Spirit is indeed present!

With Good Courage,

Pastor Sara

CAMPAIGN 360 UPDATEPhase 2 has begun! The Capital Improvement Team by way of the Church Council has hired a contractor and work is beginning in the kitchen, on a new outdoor sign, incorporating new sound in our sanctuary and with an upgrade to our fellowship hall – sound and projection. Your continued giving to this campaign is the assurance needed to complete what we have started. Thank you, both for the gifts you have given towards thiscampaign and the ones still to come. This Fall and early winter small gatherings will provide updates on where we are at in the building program along with new opportunities to give towards the campaign.

BISHOP'S CONVOCATION 2016The Wounded Word: Liberation Rising from the Margins

Monday, October 24, 2016 1:00pm to Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Salishan Resort Reformation never comes from the center, the inside. Reformation comes from the margins. Children of the Reformation must never forget this. We Lutherans donot “have” a theology as much as a call to “do” theology in an ever changing landscape. This year your pastors are asked to gather with their pastoral colleagues to share our work as theologians of the Church and minister of the Word. Please keep Pastor Sara, Pastor Donna and Pastor Tim in your prayers as they attend this event.

SOCIAL MINISTRY TEAMNext Meeting: Tuesday, November 1 at 7:30pm

A team of people is working to move forward ideas and conversations at church around "Homelessness, Hunger, and Loneliness." One team is creating a hospitable response to those who come into the church (physically or on the phone) looking for assistance. This response could range from having an accurate sheet of referral information at the front office to keeping up shower supplies to having a modest amount of readytoeat food and water on hand. The team also is researching the need for "Backpack Buddy" support at Cedar Oak Elementary School.

The larger conversation about how to best work at the issue of homelessness, and how to discern the use of WLLC resources to help with that need continues to be researched and discussed. We know that building relationships with partners in other organizations and government will be important.

We also will be planning the next year of monthly outreach offerings at the next team meeting, Tuesday, November 1, 7:30 pm at church. If you would like to help with any of these projects, please contact Brad Horton or Kris Olson from Church Council, or Pastor Donna or Pastor Sara.
