NAPLAN 2019 was due to be completed online this year, however due to Department of Education technical issues, DNPS students completed a paper version of the test except for the Year 5 writing assessment. In Year 5, our students achieved pleasing results. For Reading and Gram- mar and Punctuation, Dandenong North students achieved just below the state average, however in all other areas the children achieved well above the state averages. Again, this is a pleasing effort by all of our Year 5 stu- dents! The writing results were particularly pleasing. This is due to it being a school wide goal, which staff have embraced - building their own capaci- ty greatly in this area and in response, the childrens skills have also de- veloped. NAPLAN is just one source of infor- mation that helps to inform parents of their childs learning progress. Stu- dent reports completed by their classroom teacher provide a more compre- hensive and detailed description of what your child has achieved with their learning at that point in time and also outlines future goals. At our second last Assembly for the term, the School Spirit Awards were presented to the Preps, Year 1, 2 and 3 students.

It is always a difficult choice for Mr Mackay, Mrs Mackay and Mr Hilton - as all the children who have been nominated are deserving!

These awards are written by class teachers and take into account a student’s development across the term and their use of the 4C’s as a way of life!

Every student who is nominated should be proud of this achievement and continue to be fantastic role models for all of our students.

Below are the nominees, the winners and the reasons for their selection.

Congratulations to all!

Here are the winners for Term Three:

The winner from Prep :

Eshal (Prep A)

For always coming to school with a smile on her face, eager to learn and ready to be a part of everything that our school has to offer. Eshal you have made leaps and bounds with your learning and behaviour. Everyone in prep A (especially Mrs. Av-dic) is so very proud of you! Keep up the fantastic effort Eshal! You are a super star!

The winner from Year 1:

Dhatsin (1G)

Dhatsin demonstrates a true love of learning in all that he does. He is a reflective learner and understands that practising learnt skills and seeking feedback contrib-utes to his achievements. Dhatsin applies his utmost effort at all times and takes pride in the work that he completes. This is a wonderful learning quality which I am sure Dhatsin will continue to have in years to come. He also models the 4Cs each day by ensuring that he is empathetic and caring towards his teachers and peers. Dhatsin has had a tremendous year so far and 1G are super proud of him!

Network Maths Games Day On the 6th of September was the day that we were wait-ing for. Mr Hutchins had spent his valuable time teach-

ing and assisting us until we reached the level where we were able to achieve 8 medals. Yes, 8 medals. The two teams were prepared to work in groups to solve

logic and problem-solving puzzles and to win in any board game. When we arrived at Keysborough Prima-ry, who was hosting the biggest Maths Games Day ev-

er in our state, we saw a lot of competitors from the other schools. Inside the hall, there were 53 teams each with 4 people in them meaning over 200 students were

taking part. The event took place in the “Hall of Math” where each team was allocated a table where most of the work was done. The first task was to complete 66 questions in the tiny time-span of 55 minutes. During

this time, the teams nominated a competitor to face head-to-head with others in a Mental Math challenge. There were questions that involved speed and accuracy and working as a team, made it all much easier. Af-ter the tedious timer had gone off, we had a small break to catch up with our friends and discuss plans for

the next events. The scores for Problem Solving ac-

tivity were: Grade 6 Team - 150 and Grade 5 Team – 135. When we came back inside on the table were strange pieces that we had to use in the game of

Tetris. We had an opponent from another school. The way our opponents were chosen was by the col-our of our star on our badges that we received at the

start. The scores for the Tetris game were: Grade 6 Team – 46 and Grade 5 Team - 53. Again during the time we played Tetris, two team members were

sent into the school’s theatre to answer logic ques-tions that appeared on the screen. The scores for the Theatre Maths were: Grade 6 Team – 63 and Grade

5 Team – 63. After an enjoyable lunch break, we came back inside for our final events of the day. We played First to Connect 3 and 24. Connect 3 is a

game where you toss 2 dice and you can add or subtract the numbers to create a positive or negative num-ber that is on the game board. 24 is when you have a pile of cards, each card containing 4 numbers. The aim of the game is to create the number 24 using all of the numbers

using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The scores for the games were: Connect 3 – Grade 6 Team – 116 and Grade 5 Team – 116. 24 – Grade 6 Team – 64 and Grade 5 Team – 64. The

overall scores were: in 1st place the Grade 6 Team with 451 points, 2nd Dandenong 1st Team with 447 points and our Grade 5 Team with 439 points. All in all, the scores were pretty close and everyone had a

fantastic day out. We would like to thank Mr Mackay for taking us there and a special thanks to Mr Hutchins for spending his time pre-paring us and on the day, supporting us, so that we could win.

Year 2 Science Lessons at Lyndale Secondary

Preps Traffic School Excursion

Last week the Year 2 students were fortunate enough to visit Lyndale Secondary College to use their recently upgraded science laboratory. As part of the Year 2s ‘Wonderful World of Science’ unit, Lyndale was kind enough to volunteer their staff and laborato-ry to allow the Year 2’s to experience science up close. Mrs Lenehan and Mrs Watts took the excited and enthusiastic grade 2 students through 3 different experiments exploring chemical reac-tions. First, the students observed the foaming chemical reaction called ‘Elephant Toothpaste’. Next, the students created their own chromatography, separating the black ink into a kaleidoscope of col-ours that make up the pigment. Finally, students used the gas from another chemical reaction to blow up a balloon. The students loved their trip to Lyndale and found their time in a working laboratory fascinating. Dandenong North P.S would like to thank Lyndale and their staff for their time, expertise and generosity. By Miss Bri Nish

Last Tuesday the 3rd and Wednesday the 4th of September, the Preps visited Kew Traffic School as a part of our ‘Community’ theme. Kew Traffic School is a miniature city set which provides a safe environ-ment for children to learn road safety awareness and pedestrian skills.

While there, the students learned how to safe-ly cross the road using traffic lights and use the children’s crossing with the help of a crossing supervisor. They were also taught the importance of wearing seat belts when in cars and that children under the age of 12 should sit in the back passenger seats to avoid dan-gerous accidents with airbags. At the end of the session, the Preps had an incredible time exploring the village and rid-ing their bikes, while watching out for traffic signals and pedestrians. This excursion was a wonderful and valuable learning experience for all of the Prep students. By: Miss Kim Nguyen
