A cold November day didn'tstop over 50 volunteers fromcoming out for our latest ReddCount. The overwhelmingresponse allowed us to expandthe original survey area toinclude the entire length ofSpring Creek plus part of SlabCabin Run. In addition torecording spawning sitesvolunteers noted areas of bankerosion. The extra informationwill be valuable in planning ourfuture stream and riparianhabitat projects. We are hopingthe project will become anannual event to help evaluatethe health of Spring Creek'strout. Thank you to all the chaptermembers and volunteers fromthe US Fish and WildlifeService, PA Fish and Boat Commission and the Little JuniataRiver Association who made the project possible. A specialthanks to Joe Boston, Bob Carline Bob Vierck, and PaulaSowers for the planning, organizing, instructions and forfeeding the volunteers. The article below, Sex Outside the City, by Bob Carlinegives more information on trout spawning. Enjoy! This fall from Boalsburg to Milesburg more than 5,000 couples willreproduce outdoors and no one will notice. Why? Because it will alltake place underwater in the solitude of Spring Creek. Fall is the time when our native brook trout and the introduced browntrout carry out their annual ritual of reproduction. Brook trout willspawn in the small headwaters of Spring Creek, while brown trout willdeposit millions of eggs over more than 20 miles of the main stem...Read More

installed. Boulders will be added to the stream in the spring.
We knew the project was in good handswhen local contractor Glenn O. Hawbaker wasawarded the work. GOH has partnered withSCCTU on projects as far back as 1977. Thefirm and it's employees are very familiar withstream restoration work. The deflectorinstallation was completed hours before theOctober 1 deadline for in streamwork. SCCTU's Joe Boston and Bob Vierckwere on site the last day for help with logplacement and last minute help finding logsthe correct size for the installation.

Distillery Improvement Project CompletedSCCTU and the Pennsylvania Fish and BoatCommission partnered to install six instream multi log vane deflectors and multiple brush deflectors on asilt laden half mile section of Spring Creek. Theproject's goal was to create a redd friendly area forthe spawning trout and to reduce stream bankerosion. The rechanneling created by the deflectorsimmediately changed the flow significantly. Thiswillresult in reducing the silt and sediment depositswhich keep trout from creating their redds. Thebanks are stabilized and new fish habitat was c reated by the both the log and brush deflectors located onthe opposite bank. The project was a true partnership between SCCTUand PAFB. The final portion of SCCTU's 2012 NationalFish and Wildlife Federation grant funded thematerial purchases while PAFB provided the design, management, equipment and labor. Additional helpwas provided by our friends at the Glenn O.Hawbaker. The "Distillery" is located between Route550 and Fishermans Paradise on the site of the1870's Beezer Distillery.
The pictures show one area of eroded stream bankbefore construction, PAFB hard at work and the finalproduct.
