SHELLEY PUBLIC SCHOOL 13th March 2020VOL: 39 No.7

Principal’s ReportPrincipal’s Report

KidsMatter

It has been another producve week of learning at Shelley PS for students, teachers and parents alike. Congratulaons to our Kindergarten students, who have celebrated “30 Days of Kindergarten” today. Thank you to all the parents and other visitors who joined us for this celebraon. Special thanks to the Shelley P&C, who presented each of our Kinder students with a book to acknowledge this special day.

We pride ourselves on being a “community of lifelong learners” – and to this end, our teachers are involved in ongoing and regular professional learning, both as stage teams and as a school team. I would like to acknowledge and thank our Shelley school staff for their commitment to their own professional development and learning. Our teachers spend many hours outside of school me, to ensure that the teaching and learning programs offered at Shelley are of an outstanding quality. We are indeed blessed to have such a dedicated team of professionals working with our students.

Harmony Week at Shelley PS - Thursday 19th MarchHarmony Week in Australia is held in March, and includes 21st March, which is the United Naons Internaonal Day for the Eliminaon of Racial Discriminaon. Since 1999, more than 80,000 Harmony Week events have been held in childcare centres, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.

“It is a me to celebrate Australian mulculturalism, and the successful integraon of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful mulcultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguisc background, united by a set of core Australian values.

Australia is a vibrant and mulcultural country — from the oldest connuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.

An integrated mulcultural Australia is an integral part of our naonal identy. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious tradions, as well as taking on many new tradions. Collecvely, these tradions have enriched our naon.

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Tradionally, orange signifies social communicaon and meaningful conversaons. It also relates

to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.”

The central message for Harmony Day is that 'everyone belongs', reinforcing the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians.

We are planning our annual Harmony Day celebraons for Shelley – to take place on Thursday 19th March. We will be holding a Naonal Dress or Orange Mui Day. On this day students can come to school wearing naonal dress from their cultural heritage – or they can wear mui clothes in the colour orange. This is a free Mui day to celebrate harmony at our school (no gold coin donaon necessary). Parents are encouraged to wear their naonal dress when dropping children off in the morning!

Students will also parcipate in some Harmony Day acvies in their classroom.

Here are some fascinang stascs about Australia's diversity (taken from the ABS 2016 Census Data):

Ÿ nearly half (49%) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was

Ÿ we idenfy with over 300 ancestries

Ÿ since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia

Ÿ 85% of Australians agree mulculturalism has been good for Australia

Ÿ apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi

Ÿ more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia.

Reminder for Parent Helpers in ClassroomsAt Shelley PS we greatly value the parcipaon of parents and grandparents in many aspects of school life. One very valuable way of helping out is to volunteer as a parent helper for reading or maths groups. I would just like to remind all parents who assist in classrooms of the significance of this role – and of the trust that is placed in you as a volunteer. Confidenality is of utmost importance – and I remind all our helpers that the learning, efforts and behaviour of our students must not be discussed outside the classroom, not even with a child's parents.

Kindergarten ParentsParents with a student in Kindergarten – we ask you to please pack in your child's bag a spare change of underwear. Kindergarten children oen become so engrossed in their play or acvies – and will “forget” to stop for a toilet break. Others just don't make it on me! Although we have a small supply of underwear, it is much beer for children if they have their own underwear to change into. Please keep a spare change of underwear in a plasc bag in your child's school bag.

If your child has an accident and comes home in “school underwear” we ask that these are washed and returned to school at your earliest convenience.

Reminder: Lost Property This is repeated from our Week 3 newsleer – but it seems to be an ongoing issue. We frequently remind students about the importance of labelling all items of clothing and checking lost property for missing items. (The Lost Property cupboard is located near the hall). Occasionally I hear of jumpers that have gone missing for weeks at a me – only to turn up later and be returned to the owner because it is clearly

labelled. It is common for students to inadvertently pick up items of clothing, parcularly hats, jumpers and jackets, which do not belong to them. It is helpful if parents can check their children's school uniforms as they are going through the wash. If you noce an item that does not belong to your child,

please return it to the school as soon as possible – as its prompt return may save another parent the expense of replacing the missing item unnecessarily.

Young Leaders DayOn Monday last week, Mrs Williams and I aended The Naonal Young Leaders Day at The Internaonal Convenon Centre, Darling Harbour, with our Year 6 Student Leaders. Congratulaons to Maryam, Ronit, Elizabeth, Manaia, Eshal, Arnav, Declan and Angus- who were great ambassadors for our school and parcipated in the day enthusiascally.

Our young school leaders had an exceponal day, with some outstanding speakers, sharing insights and suggesons around facing challenges and being an effecve leader.

The speakers included:

John Cous – Speaker and Mentor

“Born with a severe physical disability, John has overcome adversity to become one of the world's most inspiraonal speakers. Doctors gave John lile hope for survival and now, without the lower part of his body, John rolls around on his custom skateboard sharing his story, life's most important lessons, and his enthusiasm for life. John's remarkable story, combined with his passion for life, never ceases to encourage and inspire the next generaon of young leaders.”

Erin Molan - One of Australia's most significant voices in sport and television.

“Erin has been a prominent host on Channel 9 for almost a decade. She is currently the Weekend News sports presenter and host of popular entertainment program 20 to One. Erin has been a trailblazer for women in sports media, highlighted by becoming the first female host of the NRL Footy Show in 2014. She is also the host of the Sunday Footy Show, match broadcasts, and numerous popular radio programs. In addion to her love of sport and television, Erin values involvement with the community and is an ambassador for mulple charies.”

Rove McManus – Triple Gold Logie Winner and Children's Author

“Rove is one of the most successful comedians and TV presenters that Australia has ever produced. In addion to being a triple Gold Logie winner, Rove is a radio host, TV producer and a children's author. In recent mes Rove has used his humour and arsc talents to create very entertaining children's books. He has wrien and illustrated the very popular 'Rocky Lobstar' and 'Disgusng McGrossface'.”

Bianca Chaield – Australian Netballer and TV Presenter

“Bianca is well known as both a former Australian Netball Captain and as a popular contestant on The Block. She leaped onto the world stage at 18 years of age, by being selected as one of the youngest players in history to debut for the Australian Diamonds. Her decorated netball career involved winning World Championships, gold and silver medals at the Commonwealth Games, and MVP awards. Since rering from Netball in 2015 Bianca developed her renovaon skills on The Block, and can be seen on Fox Sports, ABC and Channel 9 as a host, panellist and commentator. She has a passion for developing young leaders, which has seen her publish a book and launch a leadership mentoring program.”

Student Birthday Celebraons It is lovely for students to have the opportunity to

celebrate their birthday with their classmates, however we

ask parents to please limit your celebraons to a cake or

ideally small cupcakes to be shared amongst the class.

Jewellery at SchoolThe students at Shelley PS are to be congratulated on the way they wear their school uniform with pride. Although at mes it is necessary to speak to primary students about a few incorrect items of clothing “creeping in”, they clearly make a concerted effort to ensure they are wearing full and correct school uniform at all mes. I also thank parents for assisng in this area.

One area I would just like to remind all students about is the wearing of jewellery. This informaon is also important for new families to our school.

Students are permied to wear a watch and earrings. Earrings should be a small pair of studs or sleepers (NO dangly earrings or bright coloured earrings).

Necklaces are not to be worn by students at school (with the excepon being a chain with a small religious medal or cross. These should be tucked under the uniform).

No rings, bracelets, anklets or bangles (again- the excepon would be a medical alert bracelet).

School GatesWe have 5 pedestrian entries to the school which are used by students and parents in the mornings and aernoons. For the safety and security of our students, four of these pedestrian gates are closed and locked during the school day.

Please note: the Hadrian Ave carpark pedestrian access entrance remains open throughout the day, for parents needing to drop off / pick up students, or visit the school office, or for those coming to school as parent helpers.

The other four gates are closed each morning at approximately 9.30am and re-opened in the aernoon by our General Assistant.

The gates will be opened at approximately 2.50pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, and at 2.30pm on all other days.

Change of Address and Contact DetailsIt is essenal that we have up to date address, contact, and emergency contact details for every student at our school. Oen when families move – or parents change phone numbers or workplaces, it is easy to forget all the people we need to nofy! If any of your contact details change, please nofy the school office as soon as possible.

Remember- Parents can also update these details via the School APP at any me.

Please let us know if you have changed:

Ÿ Address

Ÿ Home or mobile phone

Ÿ Work place - and therefore have a new work contact number

Ÿ Email address

Ÿ Or if you have different emergency contacts to those nominated on your child's enrolment form.

Naonal Day of Acon Against Bullying and Violence – Friday 20th March 2020Next Friday is the Naonal Day of Acon Against Bullying. This day is held to raise community awareness of the impact of bullying and violence.

The NSW Department of Educaon is commied to ensuring all NSW schools remain safe places for students to learn and teachers to teach. Bullying is a complex issue for the whole community and addressing this issue requires constant vigilance by the whole community, including school communies.

The Naonal Day of Acon Against Bullying and Violence 2020 encourages us as schools, parents, families and community members to take a stand together to recognise the important role everyone plays in the drive to stop bullying.

We must remember to differenate between

Ÿ bullying as repeated incidents and

Ÿ isolated incidents (which whilst sll unacceptable are not a case of bullying)

Conflict or fights between equals and single incidents are not defined as bullying. Bullying behaviour is not:

Ÿ children not geng along well

Ÿ a situaon of mutual conflict

Ÿ single episodes of nasness or random acts of aggression or inmidaon.

During the year, all of our classes at Shelley PS are involved in discussions and lessons around the subject of bullying.

If you would like to learn more about how we can support our children in the stance against bullying, there are some great websites you can visit – including Bullying. No way!

Website: hp://bullyingnoway.gov.au/

This site has lots of great informaon as well as acvies for children to get involved in. We encourage parents to also have a look – and spend some me discussing the issue with their children.

Jo-Ann Campion

We will do this by encouraging all students to

be safe, respecul and and responsible

learners.
