The Shelter Box program, which was started in 2000, operates in 10 countries. She noted that for Shelter Box to operate in a country, there has to be government response indicating how many people need to be served, the needs of victims, what local organization Shelter Box can work through, does Shelter Box have resources and finances to respond, and noting they can only be effective if it will take at least a month for recovery. Generally, Shelter Box does not operate in countries that are not safe. Considering global development today, countries are ranked. They do take requests and responses seriously. They want to be cost effective and send items that will meet specific needs. Shelter Box has responded in the Philippines 25 times. They have served 809 families in Indo- nesia following earthquakes and a tsunami; 1,995 families in Ethiopia where there is unrest; 2,441 families in Somalia; 11,000 families in Nigeria and Niger since 2009; 5,000 in Syria since 2012; and 8,000 in Iraq since 2016. Following last week’s meeting, several members stayed around to help wrap presents for our adopted family. Original plans were to sup-port both a family provided by

already there. She had a PowerPoint presenta-

tion that showed everything that is contained in a Shelter Box. She had many items on display. They also provide shelter kits, tools, other non-food items and four different types of tents, depending on the geographical location.

Shelter Box has 11 warehouses around the world. The need is great and growing. All workers are trained before entering another country. She noted their work would not be pos-sible without the support of Rotary and volunteers. “We work hard with compassionate hearts,” she said.

Sharee presented President Tif-fany Jones a HERO banner for our continued support of Shelter Box. President Tiffany presented Sharee a check for $4,000: half from the Chandler Horizon Rotary Founda-tion and the other half being a grant from Rotary District 5495.

Greg Peterson, the new president of Chandler Gilbert Community College, will be the speaker at our December 19 meeting.

And Greg Thornton won $9 in the 50-50 drawing.

AZCEND and also a retired Navy veteran who was living in the Vet-erans Hospital in Phoenix. However, the woman recently left the hospital. with no available contacts. So, the board decided that we will find a veterans organization to support in the future, and concentrate on just the one family this holiday season.

Club members contributed $704 to the family. Soo-San Stevens-Clarke headed a committee that bought presents. They were wrapped last week and, along with a $100 check from Fry’s, were delivered later in the week. Thanks to all those who participated.
