Eulo State School Newsletter, February, 2020 Issue 1 News Just In… Welcome to the new year! We have had a fantastic start to the year, with all our students getting stuck into their work straight away. I would like to welcome Miss Tahli Virtue to our team. Miss Tahli is replacing Miss Chris, who is on leave for 6 months, so we hope you enjoy your time with us, Miss Tahli. It is great to have you on board. The rest of our team remains the same. Welcome back to you all. It is going to be a wonderful year! This is also an opportune time to welcome on board our two new families to school. Welcome Matt, Mariah, Dean and Riley, and Meisha, Bero and Archie. Our 2 new kindies have really started to settle in well to our school routines, and they are having great fun building new relationships and playing with new toys and equipment. Kindy days are Monday and Tuesday on the odd weeks and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on the even numbered weeks. I am very excited to share with you some outstanding news given to me by our Assistant Regional Director, Reid Thompson, earlier this week. He has advised us that Eulo State School has positioned in the Top 3, for Band 5 schools (120 schools), across the region, as a high performing school for reading. This is an exceptional result, and it is due to the dedication our families have provided in supporting us in the reading development of all our students. Congratulations to the Eulo State School Community!!!!! What a great way to start the year. In keeping with the high level of expectation we have towards student outcomes, our Annual Improvement Plan focus for 2020 is to improve the spelling and vocabulary of our students, as a means to improve reading comprehension. Our second focus is to complete our Cycle A and B for the Whole School Curriculum and Reporting Framework based on Version 8 of the Australian Curriculum. That’s all from me for this newsletter. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for more rain. PBL (Positive Behaviours for Learning)Eulo State School Swimming Carnival andDistrict Swimming

Eulo State School Newsletter, February, 2020Issue 1

After swimming until they grew fins and gills, the students of Eulo competed in Eulo’s first ever swimming carnival. Thanks to Mary Anne’s wonderful idea to have it at the end of the week, it was a welcome surprise to the students. Laughter and splashes filled the Cunnamulla pool as encouragement and support pored in from everyone who came to watch. Eulo’s school of fish had a great time and to say the least, it was clear the day was a success.

The District Swimming Carnival will be held in Cunnamulla at the pool

on the 21st of February where students from Sacred Heart State

School, Cunnamulla P-12 State School and Thargomindah State School

will compete.

Breaking news from the Upper Class

This term we are reading the novel ‘Charlotte’s Web’. Our class will be

learning how to respond to the text and creating a persuasive letter. We created a

spider web in our classroom, and Charlotte now lives there. She is busy

catching nouns!

This term we will be focusing on the topics of chance and probability, data and shape. We have kicked off the term with chance, and it

is highly likely that we will focus on data next. Our class goal is to improve our rapid

recall of number facts.

In Science, we are learning about different types of energy. The grade 4 students are learning about mechanical energy, grade 5

students are learning about light energy and grade 6 are focusing on electrical energy.

Science is a very hands on subject, so we are very excited about this unit!

Our class is learning about mixed media, in visual arts. We

are developing our skills of using PowerPoint.

Grades 5 & 6 will begin their

Japanese lessons with BSDE on

Tuesday.

The grade 5 and 6 students have been busy writing

their speeches this week, to run for school captain, vice captain and sports captain.

PBL (Positive Behaviours for Learning)What’s on in the K-2 RoomWith four year levels of early years learners in one group, and two different curriculums to cover, we have certainly started the year off full-on and busy.

One of the changes to the K-2 end this year, is the introduction of a daily fine motor session for all students. All the activities students participating in, involve them developing dexterity and strength in their hands and fingers. This is turn, will help them develop better hand control for writing, cutting, painting, drawing etc. It also supports the increase in stamina and endurance of students for extended periods of time, in completing these and other activities.

Also, we have begun the term encouraging students to focus on respecting and participating in established routines, such us upon arrival at school, they bring their fruit into the classroom to the fruit tray and then sign in, using their finger print next to their photo, and on the correct day. If parents could remind their children of this start of day routine as an expected behaviour, and encourage them to complete this independently, it would be greatly appreciated.

With respect to student behaviour, students in the K-2 end have been receiving points towards class dollars for using kind words, following directions, trying their best and the PBL focus (which is following routines). The PBL focus earns double dollars. These are all expected behaviours for all the students from K-Yr 6.

Eulo Kindy ProgramWelcome to our brand new Kindies, Dean and Archie. They have begun to settle into school very well. At 3 years of age, it is a big deal being away from home for full days at a time, and these little men are making the most of the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of games and activities. Sand play with the trucks, and lego and cars on the car mat are big favourites at the moment.

As part of their school experience, the Kindies choose from a variety of activities, and put these up on the white board. As they do their chosen activities, they take the picture down and move onto another choice. As well as choosing what they would like to play and do each day, the Kindies join in with the rest of the school with other routines and some lessons.

PBL (Positive Behaviours for Learning)

This year, we have decided to reinforce all the positive behaviours our students display during the day. In the K-2 end, students will be given points to identify their positive behaviours which are displayed in both words and pictures. At the end of the day, they will count up how many points they get. The points get transferred to class dollars at the end of the week. The Year 3-6 end of the classroom will be receiving Dojo points, which will also equate to classroom dollars.

We will continue with a positive behaviour focus each week. If students display the week’s focus, they will earn two class dollars for each Dojo or point they earn, which go towards buying from the prize box/ rewards chart. Our aim is to reinforce our students consistent positive attitude towards school and their learning.

PBL (Positive Behaviours for Learning)

We would love if parents, guardians and the community would help in encouraging these positive behaviours, outside of school. The PBL focus is also displayed on the noticeboard in town. We are looking forward to another great and positive year in 2020, with all students doing their best at their work and play.

The following behaviours will be our focus for Week 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Term 1:

Week 1 – 4 Follow routines

Week 5 Keep hands and feet to yourself

Week 6 Use kind words and kind actions
