IntroductionWelcome To The September Newsletter As I write, the rain is coming down in droves, our first full day of rain for weeks and weeks, I can almost hear my garden sighing in relief and getting ready to blossom and bloom. I expect many people will be feeling much better now the weather is cooler, I love it hot and sunny but I am relieved not to have to water the garden for a few days. Well done and thankyou to those who diligently watered the tubs in the High Street during these past hot few weeks!I do hope you will find time to read and reflect on the information provided in the center pages of this Newsletter edition, relating to steps this Town Council has taken to resurrect the Needham Market Neighbourhood Plan. None of us can close our eyes and ignore the challenges faced by our communities - population growth and consequent need for additional housing is fiercely upon us so a positive approach is required. This year, I am hosting the Mayors Grand Quiz at the Community Centre on Friday 28th September at 7.30pm. Jo and Frank

Lea have kindly organized the quiz and carried out all the hard work beforehand and during the quiz for many years now. Monies raised will go to the Mayor’s Charities which, this year, are Needham Market First Responders and Stowmarket Food Bank.

What a tragedy in this day and age that we have people reliant on Food Banks. Both our local Co-op shops have a food donation bin (you have to look hard for it), so please, when you go in just buy an extra tin of peas, pasta or potato’s and ask the staff to mark it up for the food bank.

Please do come along to the Grand Quiz, form teams with your friends or family or come and join a team that’s already here. Come and enjoy yourself, maybe win a raffle prize and enjoy the event in the knowledge you have helped two very well deserving local charities. More details for the Grand Quiz on page 12 of this Newsletter.

Needham Market W.I.As I am writing this the weather is cool and cloudy with showery rain - BLISS - however it’s supposed to warm up by the end of the week so we must make the most of a few days when we don’t have to water the flowers and vegetables in the garden.

We had a very enjoyable day out at Long Melford Hall with our friends from Wrabness and our talk in July was excellent. Kindra Jones talked to us about ‘A 1000 Years of Fashion’. She explained how she got hooked on historical costume as a teenager doing enactments at Kentwell Hall and then proceeded to take us through the centuries from the Normans up to the Victorians. She had examples of all sorts of clothes from underwear to outerwear and most garments in between. She modelled many of the dresses and afterwards we were able to look more closely at them.

Our meeting in September is our harvest supper when we shall be welcoming visitors from the other institutes in our group to join us.

Visitors are always welcome to join us at our meetings on the second Monday in the month at the Community Centre at 7.30 p.m.

Margaret Bond, Tel: (01449) 722788

After the long hot summer our thoughts will be turning to winter planting of the containers to take us into spring. The Sensory Garden and Burial Ground will be tidied for the winter and we will be taking part in the Mayor’s quiz in September. It is time to think about projects and fundraising events for next year and we really appreciate the assistance we receive from the Town Council, businesses and the general public. New members to our group are very welcome. It is not hard work, you do not have to give lots of time and you do not need to be an expert. The next meeting will be held on 29th September at the Community Centre at 10.00 a.m. or contact Vera on: (01449) 723424.P.R.

We are a very friendly and enthusiastic group. You are welcome to come along to a couple of rehearsals and join in or listen before making up your mind. We meet on Tuesday evenings at the United Reformed Church in Stowmarket from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in term time. Needham Market Raft RaceWhat a beautiful day we had for the 2018 Raft Race! A tough fancy dress competition: A biplane surrounded by famous/traditional Britons (winner); Buckingham Palace and the Coldstream Guards; The ‘Mines a Double’ tennis court complete with umpire’s chair and Del and Rodney’s car from only ‘Fools and Horses’.

The Burgess Ladies kept us entertained with their grit and determination to finish and the 4 Non-Bonds won the Tracey Cadman Challenge for the fastest lap in the time trials. The East Suffolk Morris Men entertained us at half time and Encore Wellness lifted the Raft Race trophy after a hard fought final.

It was great to see the sportsmanship that makes the raft race what is: the lending of oars and boats to let people continue competing; jumping off rafts for the crowds and hugs and handshakes galore after the final.

So, was it ‘A Very British Raft Race’? You bet it was, the day makes us all proud to be British.

It was unfortunate to clash with the England football match but WE WON, so a great day all round.

The Raft Race would not be possible without our many friends and sponsors.....so thank you to MSDC, Needham Market Car Boot, our Mayor Cllr Dawn Spurling, Kev Ballard, Martin Spurling, Mike Vorndran, Jim Darrah and Hella Crosby. Matt Last, Dawn Winder, Wendy Wiltshire and Alex Clarke. The Scouts for doing such a great job with the car park and helping to set up. To our lifesavers Pam and Jeremy who have done it so often they have their own t-shirts! To our sponsors Sackers, Kerridges, PPG, Town and Village Properties, Fine Finishes and everyone that donated a prize for the raffle.

We hope you had a great afternoon, we did and see you all again next year!

Needham Market and District Family Carer GroupThe Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month in the Green Room at Needham Market Community Centre, 11am - 1.00pm. We have had a break during August and our next meeting will be held on the 11th September.

All our meetings include tea/coffee, a chat and some include creative and restorative activities or a speaker. We also like to get out and about, in June we hired the Community Bus to take us to Lavenham where we had a walk and a very enjoyable lunch.

We are a very friendly group and would love to see new members at our meetings. We appreciate that, as a carer, it may be difficult for you to get away but you don’t have to spend the whole of the two hours with us. Pop in for a short break and you will receive a warm welcome.

If you would like to know more about the group, please contact Vera on: (01449) 723424. We look forward to meeting new friends.

CommunityBury St Edmunds and Stowmarket Cats Protection This month we are hoping to re-home Candie, a very pretty long haired tortoiseshell female aged about two years. Unfortunately, she wasn’t happy in a busy household with a lot of young children but, she is a sweet natured cat who loves to play and climb and is very fond of treats! She is not a lap cat at the moment but with patience and a calm, loving household this may well change as she is already gaining in confidence since being in care. Candie would be best suited as an only pet and in a household with older children or an adult only household. Candie is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

If you are interested in giving a home to Candie or another cat in our care, please ring 01449 674584. More information can be found on our website www.cats.org.uk/bury-st-edmunds and our Facebook page. If your cat has not been neutered and your circumstances mean that you need financial help towards the cost, please ring Margaret on 01284 851055 and leave a message. Your call will be returned as soon as possible.

We have some events booked as follows:-

8th September Autumn Fayre Woolpit Village Hall, IP30 9QX, 2pm – 4pm

20th October Jumble Sale Stowmarket Community Centre, IP14 2BD, 2pm – 4pm

21st October table at Needham Mkt. Craft Fayre, Community Centre 10am – 4pm

We look forward to seeing you there.

Needham Market Neighbourhood WatchAccording to recent reports it appears that as far as Needham Market is concerned, petty crime has been relatively non-existent over the last couple of months. I hope I am not tempting providence by saying this but if it is true, long may it continue. It is certainly evident as you walk around town that we are becoming more conscious of protecting our property; thankfully you don’t see so many bicycles left unprotected on lawns or garage doors left open just waiting for the opportunist thieves to take advantage. I have even seen CCTV cameras fitted on some properties. We do still need to remain vigilant, take registration numbers and report to the police if, in your opinion, the vehicle looks suspicious. It won’t be wasting their time; it could be just the thing they are looking for to complete the jigsaw to make a prosecution.

Unfortunately, scams keep coming daily either by telephone or internet. I don’t think there is a house in Needham Market that has not received a fake call from somebody claiming to be from BT saying there is a fault on the line and press this button to get it sorted or from HMRC telling us we owe them money and if we don’t pay now we will be prosecuted. If we have a computer we get emails informing us there is a virus on our computer and they need access to correct the problem. We also receive calls from fraudsters saying they are from our bank or building society telling us that our account has been compromised and they need details from us to save us losing all the money in the account. Whatever you do please ignore all these types of calls or emails; in every case the fraudsters are attempting to get money and personal information from us such as bank details, address and age etc. The less information you part with the better so please ignore these calls and put the phone down straight away. The banks, building society, HMRC or the police will never phone you asking for personal details or account or pin numbers and, rest assured, the phone companies will never cut you off without sending you a letter and assessing your situation with a visit.

Community

Have you ever wondered about Orchard Barn? ‘I did and I never really understood what they were about until I visited them following a presentation at Battisford and Combs Gardening Club.

Even then it was still difficult to pin down what Orchard Barn is about. Nobody lives there. People come and work there giving their time as and when they can. So what were they doing? Essentially people, from children to those a good bit older, were doing some very practical things, sharing their skills and learning new ones to do with the ways people used to build houses and live, making best use of their environment.

We hear a lot about the environment these days and I like others, have come to the conclusion that there is something distinctly unsatisfying about our throw away, consumer dominated way of life especially if we consider what we are leaving behind for future generations. I seem to spend my time chasing my own tail trying to pack more and more into my day and yet still not have the time to appreciate and enjoy much of it. I felt that I needed an injection of New Perspective.

So, with little understanding, I went along to Orchard Barn for a “Tree to Timber” day -I can tell you that I am very glad I did!

Everything had been made by hand from the timber frame walls to the shingles that roofed it. I thought I had walked into Tolkien’s Hobbiton. My overriding impression of this barn – restored by people power – and of the 1.5 acre plot in which it sits, was its beauty. We live with things generally made by machines with neat, clean lines but when something is made by hand, it has character. It holds something of the character of the people who made it, whether a building or wooden spoon.

In short, I felt surrounded by things that held a life to them!’

Anna’s account of her first experience is to be continued …

If you fancy a warm welcome and think that a bit of hands on experience would be of interest, please come to our Heritage Open Afternoon: Saturday 8th September from 2pm to 4.30 pm. We are to be found to the SW of Mill Road, Battisford, IP14 2LY. Admission is free. There is a guided tour at 3pm.

CommunityChernobyl Children’s Lifeline & Charity ShopThis year, whilst the weather was fantastic, it also presented problems trying to work and occupy 15 children at the same time! Although the heat was really hard for us to deal with it didn’t seem to bother the children who are used to very hot summers in Belarus.

A big thank you must go out to Stowmarket Football Club for allowing us the use of their facilities every day and for letting the children run in the water sprinklers on the hottest day of the year.

We had great success (if you can call it that) at the Dentist’s this year with only 15 extractions and 21 fillings being carried out and, for the first time in 11 years , having started at 8.30 am we were finished before lunch! This was a record especially as in past years we had all been working flat out until 6:00 pm.

The children enjoyed many outings, most sponsored by local businesses and people in the community. These included trips to Easton Park Farm, Chessington World of Adventure, Felixstowe Beach, Fred Lasts private Railway, The Circus and Beach at Great Yarmouth just to mention a few. We are of course tremendously grateful to all of you who have continued to support us over the years, I just don’t know where the time has gone. In 2007 my husband and I hosted a little girl called Nastia who was 7 years old, little did we know what it was leading to!

All the photos taken during the visit have now been uploaded to our photo website and can be viewed by clicking on the following link. You will need to use the username of member and password of Viewfotos1* (case sensitive) http://alphacenturi.com/ccll

There is also a link to a video which was shown at the leaving party covering the highlights of the visit. This can also be found at our website www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk

Finally, we have to turn our thoughts to the next visit which may seem very much in advance but the whole progress is a never ending cycle. We may bring a very small group of children for December, to include Christmas, this is a much lower key and more relaxed visit with a maximum of 6 children in the group. These tend to be slightly older than the summer group with means they will have started to learn English and will be more independent than most of those who come in the summer. Of course we still have an interpreter for the duration of the visit. This is a magical time of the year especially for children who have never experienced Christmas before. In the summer we will again bring a group of 14 children and this will be for the month of July.

If anyone is interested in finding out more about Hosting, please do get in touch with me and I will provide further details.

With grateful thanks as always.

Needham Market Town Council NewsPublic Right of Way Claim, Barking Road

Please be reminded a Public Enquiry will be held at the Community Café (formerly the Internet Café), School Street on 18th & 19th September. An objection received by The Planning Inspectorate against the making of the Order designating the route (adjacent to the Co-op/Finneys plus flats above building on Barking Road) as a Public Right of Way resulted in this Inquiry. The Town Council would appreciate it if all those who completed a user evidence form could make every effort to attend the Public Inquiry.

New Councillor Elected and Further Co-option

At the Town Council meeting held on 15th August, Town Councillors were pleased to welcome Pat Potter onto Council. Pat was co-opted at the previous Town Council meeting. There is currently a further vacant seat on the Town Council and Councillors will seek to co-opt to this seat at the Town Council meeting to be held on Wednesday 5th September.

Expressions of interest are invited from anyone who satisfies the qualification criteria and wishes to become a Town Councillor. Please contact the Town Council Office (details on page 2 on this Newsletter) for advice on the qualification criteria. There is no application form and expressions of interest can be emailed, posted or handed in to the Town Council Office. The advice I give to those considering expressing an interest is to provide a brief personal overview and what one can add to the Council by way of commitment. Alternative to submitting an expression of interest in advance is for any applicant to come along to the Town Council meeting on 5th September and opportunity will be given for them to make a verbal submission to Councillors during the meeting. Further information on being a Local Councillor can be found in The Good Councillors Guide, which is available on the Suffolk Association of Local Councils website www.salc.org.uk or, hardcopies are available from the Town Council Office.

Scorpion Martial Arts Academy recently held a free Ladies Self-defence WorkshopChief instructor of Scorpion Martial Arts Academy, Mark Jr Trent - 8th dan blackbelt, recently held a free workshop covering very simple to use but highly effective self-defence techniques for use in all manner of situations. A great turnout of ladies took part and, although there was a very serious side to the training we had lots of fun. Mark has over thirty years of security /door work behind him as well as six years spent in the police specials and five years working in a behavioural unit. Mark has a wealth of experience to share and plenty of ‘hands on’, unlike many instructors who teach self-defence.A big thank you to Needham Market Mayoress, Cllr. Dawn Spurling and husband Martin who allowed use of their Community Cafe to host the workshop. The Scorpion Academy teaches junior karate classes at the Community Centre every Tuesday from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. We are pleased to offer one month for free to all new members.Martial Arts classes run throughout the week for juniors and seniors as well as one to one and small group training. Suffolk Bereavement SupportLetting go is a difficult concept for anyone experiencing the loss of a loved one. The concept of letting go is often a tricky one for those who have lost a loved one. It’s something that is easily misconstrued as forgetting about the person concerned but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s really more about accepting what has happened but, acknowledging at the same time that love never dies and, therefore, remains unchanged after death. In our groups we try to give members an understanding that, over time, they can reach a point where the memory of a loved one can be treasured without such an intense focus on what has been lost.If this is meaningful for you in connection with a bereavement, be it recent or further back in time then why not come and join a Suffolk Bereavement Support group? We are here to help. Our afternoon group is held in central Hadleigh on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 1.30pm-3.00pm and our Capel St. Mary group meets in the early evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm-8.00pm. Each meeting finishes with refreshments and informal chat. We would love to hear from you if you would like to join us at any time. Please ring Margaret or Patrick: 01206 299832;email: [email protected]; web site: www.suffolkbereavement.org.uk.

Church News

I’m writing this as the sun beats down, the sky is blue and the school children (and teachers) are on holiday, hopefully enjoying a few weeks of rest and relaxation.

These can be great family times –holidays, shared meals, and time spent together.

They are also weeks where working families have to become great jugglers, with childcare and stretched budgets no doubt causing many a headache.

I do hope that you have all been able to get through the holidays without too many traumas, and that as the new school year begins this month you will look back on an exceptional summer where you’ve been able to create some wonderful memories with friends and relatives.

Now it’s time to look forward to new beginnings. Maybe a new school, a new class, a new teacher, a new uniform, new friends and new experiences for children and teachers alike.

I used to like the start of the school year – new pens and pencils, fresh blank pages in notebooks, new school uniform and that sense of anticipation as I set off on my bike on the first day of term.

Yet, along with the excitement and expectation there’s often a note of apprehension and nervousness as we venture into the unknown. Perhaps you or your children are worried about what lies ahead. I hope this September everyone will be on the lookout for each other - for those who are not as confident, who are fearful of what lies ahead, and be bold enough to offer them your support and friendship.

There’s a song which has this verse: ‘We are pilgrims on a journey, and companions on the road; We are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load’

Just as people rallied together during the summer, I hope the same philosophy will continue into the autumn and no one will feel lost and alone as they move into their new situations.

Reverend Mary Playford.

CommunitySt Elizabeth Hospice Shop, High StreetSummer is winding down and we’re all wondering where the time went! Some of you will be thinking of taking a late holiday, others will be planning a return to school schedules. The shop continues to be there through all the seasons. We will be starting to put out autumn clothing, stocking up on winter activities such as jigsaws and dare I say, beginning to make plans for Christmas! Aaah! Whatever you’re planning please don’t forget to pop into our shop and see what we have on our shelves. It is an ever-changing stock. Those of you who have seen something but not bought it, then come back a week or so later and been disappointed will know how quickly our stock turns over. Maybe we will have an Indian summer and be able to continue to put items outside the shop. The winter will seem shorter if we can continue doing that for as long as possible. Of course, the plus side of dark, wintry days is that the shop lights look lovely, bright and welcoming plus, the shop is warm! We are, of course, always grateful to receive any clothing, handbags, shoes, accessories, jewellery, books, jigsaws, records, CDs, DVDs, books, games, bric-a-brac, small pieces of furniture or anything else you think we might be able to sell. We really need them, so keep them coming in please. Thank you for your continuing support. We look forward to seeing you in the shop in September.

Christians Together In Needham Market

Christians Together Autumn Programme: Starting Thursday 20th September, 2018

10.30am in Room 4 at Christchurch An ecumenical group of Christians

meeting together on Thursday mornings, Open to everyone.

Please do come along, You will be assured of a warm welcome.

Needham Market and District Horticultural SocietyIf you enjoy gardens, growing and learning from experts then consider joining the thriving Needham Market & District Horticultural Society (NM&DHS).

We meet at Needham Market Community Centre on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30pm. Meetings run from February to December with an August break. Outings take place in late May, June and July to make the most of great gardens, at their summer best.

We usually have 50-60 members attending meetings and 40+ for outings.

For a modest membership fee (currently £5 p.a.) Society members enjoy nine evening talks on a variety of gardening related themes. In addition, four visits to gardens and a harvest supper are open to members and guests for a fee.

Despite the slow start to 2018, this year’s visits have all enjoyed perfect weather. Pensthorpe Reserve and Lexham Hall with wonderful rhododendron and azalea were spectacular. An evening visit to Holme House was rewarded with delicious refreshments and as the weather became hotter, Kirtling Tower’s borders looked splendid. In July we visited Elgood’s Brewery garden and Peckover House in Wisbech.

Our meeting on September 6th is themed ‘ Bulbs Galore’ and on October 4th we will hear about Herbaceous Perennials. You are welcome to attend as a visitor.

SportsNeedham Market Cricket ClubThe Club had mixed results for the last month with an equal number of wins and losses. On 14th August we won away at Feering. They scored 128 for 9 wickets. Mark Dye took 5 wickets for 22 runs off 14 overs. Needham scored 133 for 3wickets with Henry scoring 60 runs. The following week we lost at home to Harwich and Parkeston. They achieved 181 runs and we could only manage 156. Jono took 5 wickets.28th July we won away at Worlington in a very good, close match. Needham held on to win by 4 runs after Jordi put on 51 runs with Neil for the last wicket. Jono again took 5 wickets. It was a brilliant team effort by Needham against the team 2nd in the league and earned a valuable 20 points. The following week we were back to losing again away at Stowupland with a weaker team due to holidays and football commitments. Stowupland scored 238 for 8 wickets and we were well beaten only managing 157 all out against a very fit, young side.Alan Parsons
