News & Update March 2017 Tuesday, March 14, 2017 there will be a large crowd gathering in Columbia as we present a check for $50,000 to the University of Missouri Children’s Hospital. The University of Missouri Children’s Hospital is the chosen recipient for donations gathered through the Missouri Logging Council’s Log A Load for Kids program. When the national Log A Load for Kids Program started in 1988, the idea was a simple one: a logger would donate the value of a load of logs to a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Since it began in Missouri in 2010, Log A Load has helped the people of Joplin after the devastating tornado as well as the MU Children’s Hospital. MU Hospital Children’s Miracle Network Coordinator, Kristen Fritschie says the donations are more than appreciated. The Children’s Hospi- tal offers more than 30 different areas of specialty care for kids and doesn’t turn anyone away. Kristen says it costs 5 times as much to treat a child as it does an adult. “Last year, the hospital wrote off $8 million in health care cost for children,“ she said, “and insurance just isn’t paying as much as they were.” Considering all the good that has been done for children’s hospitals you’d think more people would know how much Log A Load helps, but Chair- man of the Missouri Logging Council, Shannon Jarvis, says it isn’t about recognition. “Loggers aren’t in this for the publicity,” says Shannon. “While we (loggers) sometimes get a bad rap, helping the kids is more important to us.” In Missouri, with the help of MFPA, there are several Log A Load fund raisers, includ- ing the annual golf tournament at the MFPA Summer Meeting, the annual skeet shoot, some silent auctions, and, of course, there are still loggers and saw- mills donating the values of loads of logs. “Log A Load for Kids brings everyone in the industry together,” said Shannon. “Helping kids gives all of us a stronger connection with each other.” From 2010-2016, MFPA Members have donated $50,000 to Log A Load for Kids. after the donation on March 14, 2017, the Missouri Log A Load for Kids will reach $100,000 given to the hospital! We are excited that our MFPA Members have made it possible for us to support the The University of Missouri Children’s Hospital in this significant way, your generosity is very much appreciated. And we’d like to recognize this important event by having as many people as we can attend the check presentation. Local media will be in attendance for the presentation and it will be favorable to

have a sizable representation of our industry membership at the event. After the event, we will be given a tour of the hospital highlighting areas our support has contributed to and areas our support will be devoted to into the future. After the tour, we will be having a lunch at the hospital hosted by Kristen Fritschie and Children’s Miracle Network staff.

Please RSVP and let us know that you will be coming on March 14th to celebrate your generos-ity with us. We are asking people to be there so we can show the public just how much the in-dustry cares. The event starts at 10 am in Columbia. More details are forthcoming, but please call the MFPA office (573) 634-3252 or contact me at [email protected] for more information.

2017 Summer Meeting At the Lake of the Ozarks!!

July 21-23At this point in the year the MFPA Summer Meeting seems pretty far off, but before we know it we will be reviewing committee meeting agendas, signing up for golf to support Log A load for Kids, and making plans to participate and attend the Associate Member Exhibition! We are making a move this summer to the Lake of the Ozarks and we extend a formal invitation to you to join us at Old Kinderhook in Camdenton, Missouri! We are excited to host the meeting at Old Kinderhook because the entire hotel will be occupied by MFPA members, provid-ing great opportunities for networking and socializing. We are trying to provide a balance of time dedicated to conduct-ing MFPA business, education seminars, socializing, eating good food, and having fun.

MFPA Committee Meetings start Friday morning and run throughout the day into the Associate Member Exhibition and Welcome Reception BBQ. Our Committees are fo-cused on various areas of the wood products industry and work to keep the industry moving into the future. Friday evening, visit with our Associate Member Exhibitors and find out all they have to offer to our industry members while enjoying BBQ, playing sand volleyball, cooling off in the pool, and admiring the beautiful scenery.

We are assembling an excellent line up of folks invited to speak to members at our General Education Session with a focus on the future of the wood products indus-try. What’s Next? is the question we are asking and our speakers will answer the question on various areas of the industry. Saturday night entertainment includes dinner and music at Old Kinderhook. We are excited to have our family dinner en-tertainment coming to us again this year! We welcome The Brandon Cunning Band on Saturday night and some 50’s Memphis Rock ‘n’ Roll. Straight from Memphis’ Beale Street, Brandon Cunning will be rocking the great sounds that take us back to a simpler time. It doesn’t get more authentic than this. Get ready for a jumping good time as Brandon and his band “deliver the goods!”

On Sunday, July 23th participate in the Log A Load for Kids Golf Outing Fund Rais-er at The Old Kinderhook Golf Course. The Log A Load for Kids program raises

money for treat-ment and research associated with children’s health. Donations made through the Log A Load Cam-paign goes directly to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals enabling these hospitals to better serve the children within their surround-ing area.
