WW1 CENTENARY MARKED WITH SPECIAL EVENTS
On Saturday 10 November our Junior and Senior girls X Country teams headed to Tonbridge, Kent for the South Regional Finals of the Cross Country Cup. This was the first time in our history that we had made it through to this round and to have two teams through was a fabulous achievement. The junior girls’ team was up first and they would be running a distance of 2.5km. After the heavy rain the day before the course was incredibly wet and very muddy in places. Our girls all performed magnificently well during the race in some very tough conditions. The standard of event was very high with some elite athletes taking place from some of the big Private Schools. Notable performances for the girls included Maddie Clifford 8D once again who took 5
th place overall
and Lauren Taylor 7K who came in 27th.
.
On Friday 9 November staff, students and members of the wider community took part in a very special day and evening service to commemorate the end of WW1. During the day all students took part in a special assembly led by students from different Cadet Groups and Colonel Walker. They were also treated to a performance from the Collingwood Drama group, of Archie Dobson’s ‘War’. Throughout the assembly students were asked to reflect on the sacrifices that all those who lived during WW1 had made so that we could have our freedom. We heard about the dreadful losses of human life in the Battle of the Somme, the bravery and courage that all military personnel had throughout the war and we said Thank You for their human sacrifice.

Colonel Walker offered an incredibly thought provoking, and at times, emotional perspective on life as a soldier now. Students were fascinated by his talk and learnt a lot about the realities of war and the impact that it has on the whole family and judging by their questions, they were inspired by him. The assembly ended with all students writing a message of thanks on a poppy which supported the British Legion’s #Thankyou100 project.
In the evening, we held an exhibition of students’ work in Kingston Theatre and we were absolutely delighted with the hard work and dedication that our students put in to producing some incredibly thoughtful commemorative items. Despite the rain, over 200 people came out to view these incredible items and take part in our candle lit procession to the library where we heard a poignant rendition of the Last Post played by James Alcock. The procession was led by some of our students who belong to the Frimley and Camberley Cadet Corp of Drums and it created exactly the right kind of atmosphere for the event. Miss Eaton, a former teacher at Collingwood, returned to offer some reflections along with one of our Cadets Rachael Ruske, who wrote a touching speech which was simply lovely. We then raised our Centenary flag and held a minute’s silence to remember all those that had fallen in WW1.
It was a fitting end to what has been a tremendous 4 year project at Collingwood College. Back in 2014 we had a special day off timetable where students got involved in digging trenches. We’ve also held a special candle-lit ceremony at 7am to mark the beginning of the Battle of the Somme and we planted crosses to remember those that lost their lives in the same battle. Not forgetting of course our sponsored walks, our Stockings for Heroes campaign and more recently our virtual walk around the colonies that supported Britain during WW1, all of which have raised a significant amount of money for a variety of different charities; we have all learnt a lot over the past four years. We have reflected and we have said thanks and above all else we have paid our respects to everyone who lost their life in this ‘war to end all wars’.

Our junior girls’ team was made up of one Year 8 student (Maddie Clifford 8D) and five Year 7 students (Lauren Taylor 7K, Izzy James 7F, Zara Hogston 7I, Lotty Rabey 7F and Autumn Hedley 7C) so this bodes very well for next year’s event which I know the girls are already looking forward to. In the senior girls’ event we had just two runners, Lucy Duckworth 9G and Jules Rabey 10E who were running a total distance of 2.85km. Once again being the South Regional finals the competition was very high but both girls performed really well to come in 24
th and 34
th position
out of 80+ runners. I have to congratulate all the girls for performing fantastically well and for reaching this stage of the competition, their commitment to their running is a pleasure to watch and I am looking forward to the upcoming Lightwater event.

“We were overwhelmed by the quality and variety of artefacts made by the students in response to the competition. Thank you to all students who participated and thank you to all parents who supported them! The range of ideas was outstanding with many based on personal memories and mementos from family members. The way in which the students used their skills to make craft items, models, posters, poems, stories, flags, paintings, drawings, cakes and even some Lego models was inspiring.
It was impossible to pick winners but we are pleased that Miss Eaton, our ex-Senior Assistant Principal who launched the commemorative event in 2014, was able to come in and make those difficult decisions for us! Every student who participated is to be congratulated! We hope that those of you who did not manage to see the display will have seen some of the amazing photographs taken on Friday.
We were delighted to see so many students, staff and parents attend the service which despite the rain was a lovely event. We are particularly grateful to Miss Eaton for starting our commemorative work and to Mrs Wright for bringing the four-year project to such a fabulous end.” Mrs Griffiths and Mr Tanner

An amazing 656 students across all years attended every day in the first half term. All of these students’ names are detailed in this article. A breakdown by year group also shows what an amazing start to the academic year the Year 7s have had, with over half of the cohort attending every day. The College has had an increased focus on attendance for a couple of years now and we urge you to either congratulate your child for seeing their name in the newsletter or encourage them to be in the next report and support our continued drive on improving attendance, as every lesson matters. Special mention should go to 7I who had 26 of their Form Group achieve 100% attendance for the first half term. Long may it continue! This year we have introduced a form group competition too. The Year Managers will be publicising this every week and already there is fierce competition! Each week the highest attending form group will receive 12 points, second highest 11 points and so on. The league tables are updated on a weekly basis and displayed on the Year Group notice boards. Students are already encouraging each other to attend College, which was the desired outcome! There are bonus points available for 100% attendance for the whole Form Group across a week, as well as improved attendance across a period. The leading/winning form groups at regular junctures will win prizes and I will unveil the top 3 for each year group in my next update on attendance!!

YEAR 10 NETBALL TEAM VICTORIOUS AGAINST WINSTON CHURCHILL The Year 10 netball team have been training on a Wednesday after College since September, in preparation for their first netball match against Winston Churchill. After nearly forgetting the bibs, they arrived at Winston to play on an astro-turf court, which was very slippery. The team got off to a great start and after the first quarter they were leading 5-2 - great shooting and great defence. Each quarter continued with Collingwood scoring more goals until the last quarter. Winston made some changes to their positions and they started to score the goals. In a nail-biting finish, our team managed to hold on to their lead and won 15-11. A fabulous start to the league. Our next match is in January at Gordon’s School. Any Year 10 is welcome to join the team for training, on Wednesday, in Barossa Gym from 3.15pm until 4.00pm. Congratulations Year 10! Team: Jasmine Akbar-Phillips, Libby Clarke, Katie Dimmock, Becky Stainforth, Emma Stanton, Elizabeth Walker, Immy Williams, Katie Wright

NEWS FROM ACCENT CATERING ... It’s that time of the year again when Christmas is nearly upon us! The students’ traditional Christmas dinner this year with homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce and Christmas pudding will be on Wednesday 12 December at 1.25pm in the Barossa Square Canteen. We will be offering this at £2.50 and students will be able to purchase tokens from any till point from Tuesday 13 November on a first-come, first-served basis. Please ensure that your son/daughter keeps their token safe as they will need to hand this in on the day (we will be taking names as well for our records, but handing in the token will save a lot of time). Could you also kindly explain that it would be preferable if they could try and purchase their tokens nearer to the end of either break or lunch. Free school meal students will also need to ask for a token if they require a Christmas lunch which they will be given, but please note that the money for their meal will be taken on the morning of Wednesday 12 December, meaning they if they require breakfast or a snack at break time that extra funds will need to be added to their account via ParentPay. The deadline for buying tokens is Friday 7 December. On the day students with tokens will be served first to ensure they receive their lunch but other students are also welcome to purchase a Christmas lunch on the day providing there is food left. To avoid disappointment I would suggest purchasing a token.
