2016RV COMPOUND

By Jim Snyder

We had a good group of volunteers at our last walk through.I hope we can do it again.

We will be having our Annual Meeting on January 13, 2016at 10 a.m. until noon, in the clubhouse. All RV people pleasecome. A lot of information will be provided. This is a veryimportant meeting we are trying to get a few more sites bymeasuring the existing sites and making them a little small-er in order to get small trailers in the area by the telephonebuilding. This may cause some problems but will helpincrease capacity in the compound.

Jack Horkheimer, Miami Space TransitPlanetarium, ran a series of 5-minutePBS television shows called StarHustler where he shared insights on themarvels of the night sky.

Jack was a personal inspiration and adelightful source of entertainment whenit comes to the otherwise dry subject ofastronomy – he made watching thestars fun. I can still hear his jovial voiceexplaining this or that and he would always close his show bysaying “Keep looking up!”

Well I did and what I found was a world of fascinating things rightoverhead I never knew were there. My first “telescope” was apair of my father’s binoculars and I am glad I used them. Lyingon the ground in my youth gazing skyward I had no idea what Iwas looking at but I knew one day that I would. Jack’s taglinekept me going.

PBS still carries on with Jack’s tradition with others taking overthe reins of this landmark show. You can still find all of Jack’s oldepisodes at his website at www.jackstargazer.com or onwww.youtube.com.

To learn more about astronomy, come to our next club meetingor join us at our observing session at the west end of MidmoorBlvd. All are welcome and you do not have to own a telescopeto attend. Just bring your interest, questions, enthusiasm, andsmiles. Until next month, keep looking up!

We just read and discuss what we’veread.

We’re currently studying in the book of Romans. We meeteach Wednesday in Room C from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.Linda and Bill Hartman co-chair the study, assisted by DanKrotje. A new club is being formed! We play Pickleball on the tenniscourts every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 4,and sometimes on Thursday evenings. The Secretary isBarbara Durocher, 248-252-5484.

Ron Leaky will be in charge of the equipment. (All the equip-ment needed to play is available for free.) In his absence,Barb James or Bonnie Decorso will hold the box.Arrangements are being made with the monitors of theClubhouse for keys to the courts. At this time, there is a $1donation when we play to build up a fund for new equipmentas needed. Free lessons will be available all year from RonLeaky, 346-9487. He will teach beginners and also help thosewith some experience.

The Club will meet on the courts after play time to rule on anyissues that may come up.

If you have not heard about the game, here is a brief descrip-tion. It is a cross between ping-pong (table tennis) and regu-lar tennis, played on a court roughly half the size of a tenniscourt. The paddles are similar to ping-pong paddles, and theballs are plastic whiffle balls about the size of a softball. Thereis not much running, but quick reaction time is a plus. And weusually play doubles. It is a great way to burn calories andstay in shape. The best way to discover if this game is foryou is to come and play a game or two, or simply watch us onthe courts. We hope to see your there!

By Linda Rogers

Now that the holidays are behind us, you may have someNew Year Resolutions that involve getting a bit more exercise.Tennis could be just the ticket! You will find someone to playwith on the courts every day except Sunday from 8 am to 10am. Anyone who wants to learn the game is welcome. Thereis no charge to play, and all skill levels are welcome. We havejust recently welcomed our newest member, Tom Hellem.

We had a great turnout for our annual Holiday party. Tennisin the morning was followed by a wonderful potluck supper. Agood time was had by all. A special Thank You goes to ourextraordinary cooks, David Cull and Troy and MarieShepherd, for the main dishes.

We look forward to our first 2016 monthly meeting onSaturday January 2nd at 10 am. Coffee and doughnuts willbe available for all members of the club. We will discuss plansfor our first official party of the year in February, to celebrateValentine’s Day. Annual dues of $10 are now payable for2016.

If you are looking for fun, great exercise, and new friends, come and join us! Free lessons are available from Ron Leaky,346-9487.
