PRODUCT NEWS AND INFORMATION

YOUR INDIVIDUAL SOLUTION

DEAR CUSTOMER ANDINTERESTED PARTIES,

our main topic in this newsletter is our new develop-

ment of the high current tester, which we have in

the meantime further developed to the EOL End of

Line Tester. This development concerns the hard-

ware and the software. While we have intensively

tested and improved the test unit, the pilot series

has been prepared and will be put to the test at the

beginning of 2019 to be tested under production

conditions at one of our customers.

You see dear reader, something is moving at

CMWTEC and the team responsible for this is also

introduced in this issue.

However, a broad framework is dedicated to the

review of the ELBC in Vienna. There our team

presented our product portfolio, but above all our

new development, to our customers and visitors.

The pictures of a whole page show this.

Stay interested, sincerely

NEW INNOVATIVE QUALITY INSPECTION PROCESSES IN FINISHING LINES

The reliability of automotive batteries is the most important feature, especially for the OEM market. To ensure

consistent reliability all automotive batteries are subjected to electrical quality tests prior to shipment. This 100%

quality check is performed in accordance with industry accepted standards.

The traditional test method today is that immediately after formation, and preferably, after post cleaning, the batte-

ries are discharged at high current for a few seconds. The open circuit voltage OCV before discharge and voltage un-

der load CCV at the end of discharge is determined and compared to nominal values resulting in a pass/fail decision.

To improve signifi cantly the reliability of test results the new CMWTEC End Of Line test machine now offers supple-

mental evaluation criteria. In doing so, we drew on the latest research results obtained using a variety of methods

for measuring internal resistance:

A working starter battery refl ects a single-digit mOhm value. Batteries developing high

resistance move into double-digit readings, and these can be caused by the following

conditions:

low electrolyte level

stratifi cation of electrolyte

sulfation of electrodes

bad weld connections

missing electrodes

wrong cell package assembly

broken collectors (COS)

With the new CMWTEC End Of Line test machine there are four test methods in addition to the

traditional methods which yields data referring to the internal resistance of the battery:

Sulphated electrode

Broken collector

CCVmin evaluation measures the voltage drop from OCV to CCVmin of the load jump, before the chemical reaction or „charge transfer“ takes place.

The twotier DC load method is applying two sequential discharge loads of different currents and time durations and calculates the DC resistance DCR.

The AC impedance test is another common method. A 1kHz signal excites the battery and Ohm’s law calculates the AC impedance. The internal impedance of a cell determines its current carrying capability.

Delta_V measurement begins after passing the initial voltage drop when the voltage recovers and is in a relatively stable state. The acid is now diffusing into the pores of the active mass and there is a smooth electrochemical conversion of lead respective lead oxide. Delta_V measures the gradient of this process.

When removing the load after discharge, the voltage of a healthy battery gradually recovers and rises towards the nominal voltage. Differences in the affi nity of metals in the electrodes produce this voltage potential. A parasitic load or high selfdischarge prevents voltage recovery. The second OCV (OCV2) cor-relates to irregularities affecting the recovery process.

By the optimisation of the process times and, in particular, by the reduction of the rest periods between the end of

formation and the fi nal quality test, the traditional method proves to be more and more ineffective.

The new CMWTEC 100% quality check machine allows to apply new test methods. In doing so, we drew on the

latest research results obtained using a variety of methods for measuring internal resistance.
