In Oklahoma we’re pretty good at handling bad weather. But here at Oklahoma’s Own News 9 we want to offer a few extra suggestions to ensure everyone is safe and warm this winter season. During the bitter cold times in Oklahoma, when the arctic barn door is wide open, Chief Meteorologist Gary England keeps you advised on winter weather safety tips: • Keep a good supply of rock salt and sand (kitty litter can be substituted for sand) to help with keeping your walkways safe. • Add a snow shovel to your disaster supply kit at home for when the snow is heavy. • Store a good supply of wood for your fi replace or wood-burning stove in case gas and electricity is lost and it’s a two dog night! • Be sure to winterize your home for a Friday night in the big town by cleaning gutters, trimming away trees and fi xing roof leaks. • Remember to keep faucets dripping during periods of cold weather to keep pipes from freezing. • In case a pipe does burst, have someone teach you how to turn off water valves. • Have a mechanic do a winter weather safety check for your car to keep you protected. • Keep your fuel levels as full as possible, at least half a tank, in case its hard to get to a gas station. • Place an emergency kit in your car. • Jump back Loretta! Before you venture outside, dress in warm layers with the outer layer being water repellent and carry gloves and a hat with you. • Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs when you are outside. • Please check on neighbors, friends, family and the elderly so that we can keep all Oklahomans safe this winter.For a complete list of winter weather tips, kits and more please go to News9.com/winterweather. Combine all ingredients except for jelly. Pack into shallow serving dish. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Spread hot pepper/spicy jelly on top. Serve with whole wheat crackers.

Alex Cameron’s Old Aunt Roldah’s Casserole2 tsp butter or margarine 1 lb. hamburger1 clove garlic 1 tsp saltDash of pepper 1 tsp sugar2 (8-oz) cans tomato sauce 1 (8-oz) package egg noodles1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese 1 cup sour cream4 oz cream cheese (with chives, if possible)

Brown the meat and drain. Crush the garlic and add to the meat, along with salt, pepper, sugar and tomato sauce. Cover and cook slowly 15 to 20 minutes. Cook noodles according to directions on pkg and drain. Blend softened cream cheese and sour cream together in a separate bowl. In lightly greased 3-quart casserole dish, alternate layer of noodles, cheese mixture, and meat sauce. Repeat, then sprinkle top with the cheddar cheese. In an oven pre-heated to 350 degrees, bake 20 minutes, or until bubbly.

Amanda Taylor’s Baked Brie1 brie wheel (7”-8”) 1/4 cup dried cherries 1/4 cup sliced, toasted almonds 3 Tbsp brown sugar 2 sheets puff pastry1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven 400°. Cut brie wheel in half horizontally. Sprinkle bottom half with cherries, almonds, and brown sugar. Replace the top half of brie and apply pressure. Roll out puff pastry so it will cover the brie. Put brie in middle of

pastry. Fold pastry up and around. Brush pastry with egg. Roll out other piece of pastry and cut a circle to cover the top of brie. Place on top. Save trimmings - I like to use a cookie cutter and cut a shape out and place that on top. Brush pastry top with egg. Bake 20 minutes or until the pastry begins to turn brown. Turn temperature down to 325°

and bake for another 15 minutes (you may have to cover with foil if browning too much) Wait about 10 minutes before cutting into it and serve with water crackers.

Robin Marsh’s Chocolate Sheet CakeCake Frosting2 1/3 cups fl our 1/2 cup butter2 cups sugar 4 Tbsp cocoa1 cup butter 1 tsp cinnamon1 tsp baking soda 6 Tbsp buttermilk1 1/4 cup water 1 tsp vanilla4 Tbsp cocoa 1 lb. powdered sugar1 tsp cinnamon 1 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup buttermilk or pecans2 eggs, beaten1 tsp vanilla

Mix fl our, sugar and soda in bowl. Bring butter, water, cocoa and cinnamon to a boil in saucepan. Pour over dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly. Add buttermilk, eggs, vanilla. Beat well. Pour into greased 9X13 inch pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until done. For frosting, heat butter, cocoa and buttermilk to boiling. Remove from stove and mix in vanilla, sugar and nuts. Frost cake.

Dean Blevin’s Little Smokies1 (10 oz.) jar of Red Currant Jelly1 (6 oz.) jar of prepared mustard1 ½ to 2 lbs. of Little Smokies (small link sausages)

Combine mustard and jelly by stirring over medium heat. When thoroughly combined and smooth, add smokies. More or less may be used. Cook until smokies are warmed through. May be reheated.

Stan Miller’s Pecan Pie1 pie shell 3 eggs 2/3c sugar1/2 tsp salt1/3c butter, melted1 cup dark corn syrup1 cup pecan halves. I use 2-4 cups of chopped pecans.

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Beat eggs, sugar, salt, corn syrup and butter. Mix in pecans. Pour mixture into pie shell. Bake 40-50 minutes or until set and pastry is brown.
