Quote of the week… ‘Not all superheroes have capes, some have Teaching Degrees’ - Author Unknown

Active Culture…

Our Active Culture is an important ingredient in achieving our strategic goal to promote positive and responsible attitudes to personal health and well-being.

Malvern Winter Tournament… In early August fifty one (51) Year 3-6 students from our school ventured to Darfield to compete in the annual Malvern Winter Tournament. Hororata entered teams in all four sports offered, including for the first time in a number of years, rugby. Once again the Hororata teams competed exceptionally well bringing credit to themselves and our school. A special shout-out to Taane Buechele, Zoe Parker, Blake Booth, Hubert Aquino and Jessie Smith, who were named in tournament teams to progress onto the Canterbury Winter Tournament in their respective sports. A special mention also goes out to Luke Oliver-Albon, Leithan Parker, Isaac McCorkindale and Fletcher Thwaites who were named in the Year 3-4 Tournament Team in the rugby section

I would like to acknowledge the support Rodney Booth, Loretta McCorkindale and Nicky Morgan who assisted on the day.

Learning Culture…

Our Learning Culture encourages our children to think outside the box; to use flexibility, creativity, innovation, and social intelligence to solve every day problems.

Primary Focus Day… On Friday 10 August we ran an inaugural Primary Focus Day here at our school. Working alongside a group of Future Leader scholars from Lincoln University, led by Paige Harris, children, families and friends of our school were treated to an awesome programme of structured learning sessions in the classroom, focusing on STEAM education, nutrition and keeping ourselves safe, as well as a selection of fun, active sessions run outdoors by the Future Leaders group.

In addition to the exciting things happening on site during the day, parents and children also took time out of their busy lives at home to compete in the dad and kids baking competition, mum and kid’s art and sculpture competition and a family photo shoot competition.

The main purpose of the day was to promote social, mental and physical well-being within the rural community and to reinforce the idea that spending time with your family is important and an integral part of mental fitness for all family members. Activities on the day were designed around Farm Strong’s BIG 5 key aspects of well-being - ‘Be Active', ‘Take Notice', ‘Keep Learning', ‘Give' and ‘Connect', which have a strong links to our school values. More info at http://farmstrong.co.nz/

A special treat for the day were our visitors from the USA who shared with us their teaching style known simply as Tinkering; members from the Cancer Society who upskilled our kids on keeping safe in the sun and last but not least the lunchtime performance by our local Kapa Haka group.

A huge thank you to Paige and her team from Lincoln University, for the bringing their dream to our community; to Gever Tulley and Mackenzie Price, for bringing Tinkering to our classrooms; to Martin Witt and Amanda Dodd from the Cancer Society of New Zealand, for keeping our kids safe; to the South Malvern Kapa Haka group for entertaining us; to Lucy Cookson and Amanda Cullen for keeping our kids healthy and Penny and the awesome PTA for filling our kids tummies… Kia ora rawa atu (thanks)

Haere ra... this term we farewelled Zaidyn, Swaide and Jaydar Williams from our school. Thank you both for the contribution you made to our school during your time with us.

Finally, our school has an open-door policy and welcomes parents/caregivers to discuss their child’s progress and elements of classroom or school programmes at any time. Parent-Teacher Conferences are a valuable part of our open-door policy. Parent-Teacher Conferences are being held on Monday 13 – Tuesday 14 August 2018 (Wk. 4) this term. If you missed out, please don’t hesitate to call the school and arrange a future time and date to catch up with your child’s classroom teacher.

Thanks for supporting our school

Hello all, We are all loving the warm weather and even had a chance to open up our doors so we can learn in the sunshine. This week we are focusing on the letter Tt. What does it look like? What does it sound like? What starts with the t sound? Get your child to show you the action for the t sound and see if they can think of some things which start with 't.' We are enjoying using our new scooter board for PMP. Huge thanks Malcolm for making it for us! Lucy

Piwakawaka (Yrs 1-2) Miss Raybould

It was great to see so many involved in the family day on Friday. There were lots of fun activities for all and everyone seemed to enjoy their day. Let me know if you don't have a Basic Facts chart at home. I sent them home earlier this year but some may not have been ready then. All Piwi children are practising their facts every day and the charts shows you the sequence they are learned. Regards Julia

Kea (Yrs 2-3-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all, So much has been happening in our school over the last few weeks. It was great to see a good turn out for our Primary Focus day and so many creative entries. Thank you to all those who made this day possible. This week is parent meeting week. If you haven't booked at time there are still time slots available. Or if you can't make either of those days you can always book for another day that suits. Megan

Kakapo (Yrs 3-4-5) Ms Cullen

Kai Ora Koutou, What an amazing day last Friday was. It was great to watch how well the Lincoln students organised everything and got involved with the kids, the kids had a ball. Thank you to everyone for the hard work you put into the cakes and models i was very impressed. I don't know if the kids have told you but we have decided to build a small play shop from palettes for the classroom, we want to practice using money. So if any parents would like to give us a hand and also give us some tools that would be great. I will send out a separate a email what we need and when we will be doing it. I look forward to seeing everyone at the parent teacher meetings in the next 2 days. Ka kite ano Amanda

Hello Everybody It was lovely seeing so many of you at school on Friday at the Primary focus day. This was run by a group of students from Lincoln University and everyone looked as if they were having a great day. In class we are working on fractions, you can help at home by discussing how you use fractions in everyday life – cooking or on the farm or at your work etc. Spelling is being sent home every week, please encourage your child to practise their words – thank you. Finally last week we visited Coton’s Cottage, everyone had a great time discovering new things and learning a little about Hororata and the school’s history. Jenni

Spot Light Kea Should a T-Rex be allowed to drive a car?

Last night there was a big crash in the road and the T-Rex jumped

from the car. Carl

I think that T-Rex’s should, or maybe not drive because they have chubby hands. They’re so high none of them can reach the wheel. He

is stupid. He can’t. No way. He can’t. Ollie L

I think that T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars because they don’t know how

to drive and that is bad because they could crash, then they will have

to fix it and that is fair. Trinity

T’-Rex’s should drive cars. They will do a good job, but they need a

bigger car to drive. Some need to walk instead of drive. Mac

Some T-Rex’s like driving. One time the T-Rex crashed and it was a car accident. It was not fun for the person. Most people and T-Rex’s don’t like driving because they see on News Hub that it is not fun. Zander

One day the two T-Rex’s were driving the cars. Big cars. They crashed together. The car broke. They had to fix it. Then they drove

off and crashed again. Benson

I think that T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars because T-Rex’s are too big. Their feet are too big and their arms are too small. But if T-Rex’s drive

cars they will crash. Lance

I think that T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars. One dinosaur was in a car. All the dinosaurs are too big for cars and they are too fat. When they get in the cars they will break the car. They will have to fix it. The next day

he had an accident. Jono

I think that T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars because they won’t fit. And if they hop in the car they can crash and the wheels will fall off then you

will have to walk. Ayden

The dinosaur can break the car. The dinosaur can’t reach the steering

wheel with his arms. Cj

The car didn’t drive because the funny dinosaur he didn’t drive. He

crashed and the mechanics just got their tools. Noah

I think that T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars because it’s dangerous. Mat-thew K

I think that T-Rex’s should not drive cars because people will get very

mad. They will get the police men. Matthew T

T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars because they will crash. Some people think it is a good idea. I think it is not a good idea. T-Rex’s get hungry. Billie

One day the two T-Rex’s were driving the cars. Big cars. They crashed together. The car broke. They had to fix it. Then they drove

off and crashed again. Jimmy

I think that T-Rex’s should drive cars because it would be funny if he got caught by the dog squad. Then he got out of the car and went to the stadium and stole Lightning McQueen and zoomed off to dinosaur

house. Fletcher

I think they would stop too much because they are too hungry. Anyway I think they can’t drive because they have baby hands. That’s why they

don’t have cars. Isaac

I think that T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars because they will hit you and

you will fly out the window and kill you and eat you. The police will

come after them. They are colour blind so they can’t see traffic lights.

Ollie T

I think T-Rex’s shouldn’t drive cars because T-Rex’s are too tall. And

their arms are too small. The cars would be too little. Jimmy
