CARNIVAL Congratulations to our students, Jesyca Pearson, Tyson Whyburn, Meg Fulwood, Hugh Foy, Karla Pearson and Kara Yelland who were successful at the Western Region Carnival in Dubbo last Friday and will now compete at the CHS State Carnival at Homebush in September. This is a wonderful achievement and we wish all our students success for the next level of competition. PUBLIC SPEAKING SUCCESS FOR KATELAN PHILPOTT Congratulations to Katelan Philpott and Bridie Dive who travelled to Kandos to compete in the Legacy Public Speaking Contest recently. Katelan went on to win the Western Region section of the state wide competition and will compete in the next leg at Parliament House later in the term. Thankyou Mr Eccleston for your lunchtime tutoring sessions with the students. Katelan is pictured at right. (see full story on page 2)
SHARED STORIES Writing continues to be a priority at Molong Central School and Demelza Lee, from Mrs Horan’s 3/4 Canobolas class, shared a wonderful holiday recount with me. Her attention to punctuation and use of language was highlighted in her delightful story about what her family did in the holidays. Please see a picture of Demelza at left, sharing her story with me.

LEGACY PUBLIC SPEAKING
On Monday 25/08/16 two Year 8 students, Katelan
Philpott and Bridie Dive travelled all the way to Kandos
High School. The Legacy Public Speaking competition
was held there. This is the state wide Public Speaking
competition for students in Years 7, 8 and 9, open to
public and private schools. All students have to present a
five-minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice and
a two-minute impromptu speech on a given topic. As you
may imagine this is a challenging and worthy competition.
Both Bridie and Katelan spoke very well. So well, in fact,
that we are proud to announce that Katelan won the
competition, she is the champion public speaker from
Years 7 to 9 in Western New South Wales. She is now
invited to participate in the state semi-finals to be held in
Sydney at NSW Parliament House. Well done to you both.
Mr David Eccleston, English teacher.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY EXCURSION TO THE SYDNEY WOOD SHOW On Friday 24 June, a group of Industrial Technology students from MCS headed down to Sydney for the annual Timber and Working with Wood Show. This show is the largest timber industry and hobby show in Australia and provides a great insight into the many aspects of the timber industry, with displays from timber suppliers, wood-working clubs, industry representatives, tool and machine

sellers as well as the InTech Awards, where the very best of HSC Industrial Technology Projects from last year are displayed. This show is a great opportunity for students from MCS to get a big picture view of the world of timber. We left school when it was still dark and travelled by coach, stopping at Lithgow for breakfast before heading on to Homebush for the show. Arriving at the Sydney Olympic Park we headed into the huge hall where students spent their time asking questions, watching displays, completing their question sheet and collecting information. For a group of our students the highlight of the day was competing in the cross-cut sawing competition where Jack Gavin and Leigh Brown held onto a stand while the mighty crosscutting juggernauts of Reid Cornelissens and Josh Dowler took on a team from Greystanes High in the final “saw-off” – the opposition consisted of a couple of huge Samoan guys who were flexing their enormous muscles in an attempt to intimidate our boys. Not to be put off Reid and Josh soon accounted for their opponents by a couple of minutes to claim the title. At the end of the show we reboarded our coach to head back for home, crossing through heavy snow falls between Lithgow and Bathurst (we had a short break in Lithgow where a couple of the boys took the opportunity to have a snow fight), before stopping for an early evening break in Bathurst. We arrived home just after 7pm, to relieved parents, having had a very big day full of excitement, learning, wood, snow and high quality puns from Mr Culverson and Mr Costa.

Raw Talent shines at State Cross Country!
On Friday 22nd July, two students from Primary travelled to Eastern Creek to compete in the State Cross Country Trials. They were Maggie Kirby and Taylah Hobbs. Both girls fell back on their own raw talent as both had had little time to train, especially with the amount of wet weather we have had lately. Maggie competed first and came 13th out of possibly 80 students competing. Imagine what would have happened if she had trained!! This is an incredible effort especially at this elite level. Next to come was Taylah! Taylah came a credible 77th out of 100. Taylah was up against some tough competition with many competitors bringing their own coach for the event. Well done Taylah. This is a great achievement from both Maggie and Taylah. Congratulations, we are proud of you!
Our Athletics Carnival finally happens! Last Thursday we were finally able to hold our track events for Athletics following many postponements due to wet weather. Many thanks to Mrs Brown for persevering and for her organisation on the day. A huge thankyou to all of the parents who gave a hand. Without your help it would be very hard to hold such a carnival. Results and those going to District will be announced this week.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Last week Primary staff held 3 Parent /Teacher evenings. Each evening has been well received with many parents pleased with their child’s progress. If you were unable to attend, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher to make an alternative appointment.
Easy ways to add physical activity to your day: walk to the store, the school or the playground instead of using the car
allow time for children to play outdoors
park the car away from the shops
get off the bus one stop earlier
don’t use the remote control
plant a veggie garden
take the stairs instead of escalators or lifts
schedule regular time each week for your family to be physically active together
limit television time to no more than two hours per day or 14 hours a week.

Hi Everyone, It has been a busy time for our students in the Library with all classes working on their CWA projects. The country of study this year is Mongolia. Year Six is preparing a travel brochure on Mongolia. Year Five is completing a project on Mongolia. Year Four and Three are producing a poster advertising Mongolia. Year Two is producing a poster depicting life in Mongolia. Year One and Two are examining the map and flag of Mongolia. Thanks to the parents who have provided cardboard already so that student may commence their Mongolian project. Education Week is this Wednesday 3rd August and the Library will be used for several meetings during the day. Book Week is fast approaching with the dates being 22nd to 26th August 2016 (Week 6). The theme for this year’s book week is Australia: Story Country. A number of activities are planned to celebrate this week. To all students undertaking the Premier’s Reading Challenge – keep reading and recording your books, as access to the PRC site closes at midnight on Friday, 19th August. Have a great week reading!
