Please pay your open membership fees for 2006, 2007 and 2008
Dear Alumni,
It takes another two weeks until we meet at our homecoming. The board has done a lot of homework to
get an overview on our membership and a solid database for our future work.
Thus, we know now, who has still an open membership fee, whether it is for this year or the years before.
Please be advised and prepared, that all members with due membership fees will get an email letter within
the next days as a friendly reminder to pay those dues.
It is needless to say, that it is our all responsibility to take care about paying our dues. However we have to
admit, that previously HHL alumni association has not sent out reminders. This is what we are doing now.
You might pay those dues either directly, or via “Einzugsermächtigung” from a German Bank Account,
which you can give us electronically in your membership account under www.hhl‐alumni.de.
In case you have no password anymore, please use the “forgot password?”‐function to obtain a new one or
get in touch with [email protected].
In case you have further questions please feel free to get in touch with me via [email protected]
If we are mistaken with the information on your open dues, please send me a copy of the payment receipt
also at [email protected]
Please get also in touch with me at [email protected], if you are not able to pay your dues at once in
full. We will agree with you on a payment plan to ease your situation.

HHL Alumni in London meet at German Embassy Fall 2009 marks a special time in Leipzig’s history. Twenty years
ago, a people's movement started in Leipzig that eventually
spread across the German Democratic Republic resulting in the
fall of the Berlin Wall. This overturn of the government became
known as “Peaceful Revolution”. Despite a high level of
uncertainty and tension, no shot was fired on the streets of
Leipzig.
This Peaceful Revolution was also celebrated in London during a
commemorative week of events. HHL alumni were invited to
attend the reception at the embassy that included a private
exhibition of works of Neo Rauch, a renowned Leipzig artist, as
well as a concert by musicians of the Gewandhausorchester. For
the London chapter, it was a welcome chance to get together
again after the summer break. Despite difficulties finding each
other on the premises, all alumni present and HHL Alumni
Officer Franziska Rook had a great time. We would like to extend
our thanks to the City of Leipzig and the German Embassy
London for making this invitation possible.

Salut HHL‐Alumnis
Just to let you know, I will not stay in Frankfurt for the next 3 months, but in Paris. My employer Bankhaus Metzler gave me the opportunity to participate in a secondment program with our French cooperation partner Edmond de Rothschild (EdR). My tasks will be more or less the same as in Frankfurt, as I stay with the Corporate Finance Team of EdR. I am looking forward to these 3 months and hope that I will have the possibility of profiting a little bit from savoir vivre. The Frankfurt Stammtisch will still go on during this time as Florian will organize them. Bien cordialement

In Summer 2009, Harmeet Singh Chadha (M6) got married to his spouse Harleen in a beautiful temple ceremony in New Delhi, India. The couple is now residing in London.
If you have news to tell, let us know! Contact Franziska Rook!
Supporting HHL from Norway Preben Lybbek (M4) welcomed HHL Alumni Officer
Franziska Rook during a private trip to Norway. Preben is
the only alumnus from HHL who currently resides in
Norway (that we are aware of) thus he was eager to
reminisce about his studies in Leipzig and to learn about
the changes at HHL.
Preben really enjoyed his time in Leipzig and stayed there
beyond his study time, also due to his wife playing handball
for the University of Leipzig. Eventually, he and his wife
returned to Oslo, where he now works for DnB NOR ASA.
Save the date: Homecoming , 3rd weekend in October, 16. – 18. 10.2009
Don't forget to save the date for the homecoming this year. Among others we will visit the production side
of the new Porsche Panamera and have a first‐hand discussion with the Porsche Management.

New Chair of Economic and Business Ethics established at HHL
concept of economic and business ethics which
advances integrative research and teaching on a number of levels. The main focus of the concept is the
Golden Rule, that is: Invest in the conditions of cross‐generational social co‐operation for mutual
advantage." The chair is firmly integrated in the HHL research structure which encompasses all the core
subjects of business administration and economics, and will be a central element in the management
education, helping to sharpen students' awareness of economic and business ethics issues. Suchanek
explained: "Co‐teaching is particularly important in this respect. It means for example that an ethicist
comes into a marketing course and discusses with the lecturer and the students about the challenges
involved in building up markets for people on lower incomes." Aside from attracting third‐party funding,
the chair will also work on developing interdisciplinary and international co‐operation with a wide range of
partners.
The importance of economic ethics in both theory and practice was underlined by Dr. Konrad Schily,
Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Business Administration at the Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation:
"The economy defines our world. It's not just the most recent upheavals caused by the financial crisis that
have shown us that we need to develop and apply ethical principles in business."
The new chair will pick up exactly where the DOW Research Professorship for Sustainability and Global
Ethics at HHL, which was sponsored by DOW Deutschland, left off.

HHL Start‐up career fair
For the first time, HHL invited it´s start‐ups for a career fair to
Leipzig. This new offering for companies from HHL graduates
younger than five years was introduced as a result of
discussions from the “HHL‐Unternehmerstammtisch” and the
wish to have a possibility for start‐ups to get in closer contact
with current students and graduates.
Organized by Career Services around Melanie Janke and Kati
Dorsch, the career fair got one of the popular first spots for
company presentations – free of charge. The six presenters
were Joachim von Massow with SunCoal Industries, Malte Paul with Playnik, Florian Jäger with flymedic,
Martin Schlichte with Lecturio, Christian Angele with imedo.de and Lukasz Gadowski with Team Europe
Ventures.
The presentations and discussions with the over 70 attending students continued throughout the evening
with a get‐together and BBQ in front of HHL. As Florian Jäger stated, “a great opportunity to network with
potential employees and interns ‐ but also with the other start‐ups”. And surely an event, HHL will continue
to offer in the following years.

New family business study: success factors in the crisis
Fresh off the press come the results from a study which the chair has conducted in cooperation with
Munich‐based Alphazirkel, a family business oriented organization. Over 200 family businesses from
Germany participated in a study that aimed on identifying the impact of the crisis on management behavior
and to derive the success factors to survive the current downturn. Our results show that family businesses
are indeed affected by the crisis, but that the impact is not as severe as indicated by the press in recent
months. Surprisingly, most stated that access to financial capital has not worsened significantly and we can
see from our surveys that the outlook in general is quite good. Family businesses have stayed focused on
their strategic approaches also in the crisis, only making minor adjustments to defend their market
positions. For example, they currently focus less on growth initiatives and make more use of financial
measures like cash‐flow for managing the company.
The full results will be published soon and presented at events with the Alphazirkel in Munich and the
industrieverein Sachsen 1828 in Chemnitz in December. For more information on the study or the events
please contact our chair at [email protected]

Interview: HHL’s doctoral program – a success story
Established in 1996, HHL’s doctoral program has produced 77 graduates to date and, with
89 candidates currently enrolled, it is growing fast. In an interview with HHL news, Dr. Emilio Matthaei
(K16) tells about his dissertation project, the research journey and the great opportunities that HHL has
offered to him.
What is your dissertation about?
Dr. Matthaei: My thesis “The Nature of Executive Work” presents what executives do. The research focused
on the activities of senior executives of global organizations and proposes role models on how to operate
and integrate the business, as well as how to span boundaries across organizations. I am very grateful to
the Peter Pribilla Foundation for their financial support of this project.
Did you connect up with other research institutions?
Dr. Matthaei: My research has been a journey so far. In parallel to my doctoral studies at HHL, I worked as a
Research Associate at HHL and then the Friedrich‐Alexander University of Erlangen‐Nürnberg (FAU).
Moreover, I very much enjoyed my final year as a DAAD research scholar at the University of Oxford.
What opportunities did HHL offer you?
20
Dr. Matthaei: I had the chance to learn from outstanding academics at HHL, in particular my doctoral
supervisor Professor Dr. Kathrin M. Möslein. Throughout the years at HHL, I was exposed to the topics
strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Also, I worked on several research projects funded by the
BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche
Wissenschaft. Results of one project on entrepreneurs and small and medium‐sized companies have
recently been published entitled “Strategies for Innovators” (Gabler 2009) with Professor Dr. Kathrin M.
Möslein.
DAAD supports German scientists planning to return to Germany
The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) program
"Rückgewinnung deutscher Wissenschaftler aus dem Ausland“
targets doctoral students in the final stages of their dissertation, post
doctorates, and scientists currently teaching abroad who wish to
return to Germany.
A travel allowance, and a returnee stipend, help the grantees to be
re‐integrated in the German scientific community.

HHL, the book “Kommunikation als Erfolgsfaktor im
Innovationsmanagement” ‐ Strategien im Zeitalter der Open Innovation
written by Prof. Kathrin M. Moeslein and Prof. Dr. Ansgar Zerfass has
recently been published.
The book gives a focused insight on current concepts of innovation
management and its link with necessary communication skills. New
products, service performance and technology are the keys to
advancement and competitiveness. Success to achieving these is
increasingly dependent upon 2 aspects. The first is putting leading
theories and concepts of open innovation and creation of value into
practice. Secondly, suppliers, customers, employees and network partners are strengthened and integrated
into the early phases of idea generation and implementation. This publication provides a stepping‐stone
between communications and innovation management and offers a concise introduction into the theme.
Trendsetting innovation concepts are also introduced, such as state of the art innovation communication,
21
case studies of notable businesses and theoretical views from an economic and communications‐scientific
prospective. Empirical results of the first German study of the roll of communication as a success factor in
innovations management from tech businesses convey a comprehensive insight.
The book’s target audience includes decision makers in industry and service performance businesses, as
well as those in the technology and communications areas. The book is also a fine reference for scientists
and students of innovation management, communications and public relations.
The book can be ordered at Gabler Verlag: http://www.gabler.de (ISBN: 978‐3‐8349‐1659‐4; EUR: 59,90)

From China to Chile: HHL Summer Program on EU enlargement well attended again This year’s Summer Program at HHL on EU
enlargement was held from 27 July to 8
August, and was once again well attended,
with 22 participants from 10 different
countries. The program itself was held in
English at HHL in Leipzig and at Vysoká
Škola Ekonomická in Prague, while the
students came from HHL partner
institutions such as Universidad de Talca
(Chile), Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de
México (Mexico), University of Chicago
Booth GSB, University of Louisville, Emory
University (all USA), Instituto de Empresa
(Spain) and Lanzhou University (China).
Learning on the basis of common economic and political ground
The goal of the Summer Program, which has taken place annually since 2001, is to give students an
awareness and a set of appropriate skills which will enable them to build up business relations in the
enlarged European Union, and particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.
The curriculum included a visit to Porsche Leipzig and a comparison visit to Škoda Prague: Also included
was a presentation by the Deutsche Bank on the introduction of the Deutschmark in East Germany after
1990 and on the introduction of the Euro in Germany, and a parallel visit to the Czech National Bank as it
prepares to introduce the Euro in the Czech Republic. Despite the current crisis in the financial markets, Vít
Bárta, advisor to the Vice‐Governor at the Czech National Bank, declared that, “The Czech financial system
remains stable and public confidence in banking institutions persists.”
The differences between Germany and the Czech Republic with regard to the conditions for setting up
businesses were also discussed, as were political comparisons between effects of the reunification of
Germany and the splitting up of Czechoslovakia.
Keynote presentations given by the students themselves meant that the participants learned not only
about economic and management issues but also about cultural differences between the different
countries represented at the Summer Program.
Social Impact of multinational corporations Poverty is among the most pressing global issues – one billion people are still living on less than one dollar
per day. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), developed by the United Nations, defined a path for
addressing economic, social and environmental dimensions of poverty, expecting not only governments of
developing countries, but also private sector companies, operating in those countries, to play a vital role in
alleviating poverty. Multinational Corporations (MNCs), in particular, are contributing to development to a
23
large extent. Their social impact through business activities and their commitment for the communities are
far from being negligible, but often enough they are not sufficiently visible to the global public.
Part of the research focus of Martina Wuttke, Research Associate at the Chair of Microeconomics, is on the
social impact of MNCs in India, in particular on how these companies directly and indirectly address the
economic, social and environmental dimensions of poverty through Corporate Social Responsibility. In
order to gain a deeper insight into the CSR picture in India, and to strengthen the empirical evidence of CSR
as business case, Martina Wuttke conducted a study in India in July 2009, including interviews with CSR
directors of Indian and international global players and leading NGOs, engaged in respective areas. The
outcome of this study in form of several case studies will be an academic contribution to the attainment of
the MDGs in the sense of bringing light into the current CSR practices and its impact on poverty alleviation
as a starting point for further social and political action. Vivek Velamuri

Arte. In October, it will be aired by MDR, and more stations are to follow. The movie is intense in parts but
certainly worth to see.
