Hello S&R Stakeholders,

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO’S PRIME MINISTER VISITED CHINA FOR TRADE AND INVESTMENT TALKS

SATT CALLS FOR FEASIBILITY STUDY ON LA BREA PORT

L-R: Trade and Investment Minister Vasant Bharath, Works Minister Suruj Rambachan, Councillor Faaiq Mohammed and Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan in Chaguanas during port discussions with the Shipping Association of T&T (SATT).

The Shipping Association of T&T (SATT) has expressed concern that construction of another containerised port in the country may stymie the growth aspirations and potential of the existing ports at Port-of-Spain and Point Lisas. In a statement, the group said transshipment in the region is already ultra-competitive and limited in the context of the shipping lanes in which T&T is expected to further compete. To read the article, please click the following link: http://www.guardian.co.tt/business/2014-03-15/satt-calls-feasibility-study-la-brea-port

Damen Shiprepair Brest (France)

Damen Brest’s Managing Director Jos Goris commented: “We are very pleased with the order from Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers. Shuttle tankers are delicate vessels and require a high level of operational reliability hence the selection criteria of a dry-docking will always be carefully considered by owners and operators. We are happy to see that Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers has chosen for Damen Shiprepair Brest.” Mr. Goris continues: “We are known for our highly qualified and trained mechanical department and surely this has been taken into consideration by owners in the decision making process.”

Damen Shiprepair Brest presently has two Hyproc Shipping Company LNG carriers in the yard for extensive maintenance works, Italian owner LPG carrier Pertusola and Jan De Nul’s Simon Stevin for various modification works.

DRILL RIGS AND OFFSHORE VESSELS - BIG THRUSTERS REQUIRE THE RIGHT SOLUTIONS! Subsea Global Solutions has remained very busy in early 2014 supporting several oil and gas clients with inspections, maintenance and thruster exchanges. Working both in-shore and off-shore, unique underwater solutions were developed for various semi-submersible and crane vessels to safely, efficiently and effectively complete the scope of work.

Offshore Supply Vessel offering services to an offshore platform.

The exchange of large demountable azimuthing thrusters is a systematic process that involves close coordination between inboard operations, outboard operations and lifting services. This systematic approach is quite straight forward when performed in-shore in sheltered areas, but when performed almost 100 nautical miles offshore in the dead of winter, this systematic process takes on a new life of its own. Unique processes with built in redundancy, specialized fit for purpose equipment and a concrete communication plan need to be in place to keep the work moving forward efficiently and safely for all personnel in and out of the water. Developing a flexible dive plan with built in redundancy at all levels is essential when working in such conditions.

Current, sea state and strong winds made the location challenging especially when rigging 75 ton thrusters into position! Subsea Global Solutions provided all dive operation management, personnel and equipment to provide around the clock diving operations from multiple dive platforms both on and off the semi-submersible. By remaining agile and able to adapt to the ever changing weather conditions, Subsea Global Solutions’ was able to provide continuous support for the thruster exchange process. This allowed all work to be completed to the full satisfaction of the owner; even after others failed.

Bringing experience and a can-do attitude within the entire organization from top to bottom is what makes Subsea Global Solutions unique when performing these large projects in the Oil and Gas industry.

Simultaneously in other parts of the world, Subsea Global Solutions was servicing two other oil and gas installations. One Drill Ship required a detailed Underwater Inspection in-lieu of dry docking (UWILD) for class while the other vessel, a large crane ship, required the exchange of demountable propulsion azimuthing thrusters weighing approximately 60 tons. Both projects took place in the Caribbean. Operating efficiently within the time parameters and dive windows in accordance with both vessel operators’ stringent diving regulations has made Subsea Global Solutions the company’s “turn to” resource for all of their diving needs.

The Oil and Gas market is enjoying Subsea Global Solutions’ professionalism from start to finish. Delivering on its core values of quality and safety, Subsea Global Solutions has demonstrated that Quality Service is “not an Act but a Habit”. Additionally Subsea Global Solutions has demonstrated that Safety’s the “Golden thread woven into our culture”.

ATLANTIC PACIFIC MARINE SLASHES OUT-OF-SERVICE DAYS

Ship Engine onboard the ‘DISNEY WONDER’ luxury cruise liner

Removing a 132 tonne engine from an 11 deck luxury cruise liner whilst it’s in-service may sound impossible, but that’s exactly what marine engineers Atlantic Pacific Marine (APM) did in February. The company teamed up with wire sawing experts Drillcut (UK) Ltd to cut one of Disney Wonder’s Sulzer ZA40S engines into 32 separate sections en-voyage. The sections were then lifted out and off loaded, enabling ultra-fast engine replacement once the liner had dry docked in the Grand Bahama Shipyard. In all, the innovative process saved six dry docked days.

“The job was such a success that we’re already dealing with another five enquiries for the same service,” says APM’s Managing Director, Leroy Bishop. “The time and money savings are obviously very attractive: both in terms of project turnaround and also the negation of dry-docked, out-of-service days. So too are the inherent Health and Safety advantages,” he explains. “As there is no hot work involved, there are no fumes or fire risks. Also our methodology means zero disturbance to passengers and crew.”

The APM and Drillcut team of seven men boarded the ‘DISNEY WONDER’ in Nassau, and completed the project within fourteen days. Diamond wire saws were used to cut the Sulzer ZA40S into 32 sections, including all engine components such as the 400mm diameter hardened steel crankshaft case. Each cut took around six hours.

“As well as in-service engine removal, our wire-cutting method will be of considerable benefit for scrubber fittings,” says Mr Bishop. The process will enable APM teams to make fast, clean cuts to exhausts, pre-scrubber insertion. Similarly, evaporator demolition will be much simpler and faster.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS Virginia Leads US in Shipbuilding Jobs – January 13th, 2014. State maritime industry supports more than 63,000 jobs; worth over $5.5 billion annually to Virginia’s economy. The American Maritime Partnership (AMP) today joined with the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA), Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Congressman Rob Wittman (R-Va.) and Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-Va.), to highlight new data that shows Virginia ranks first among all U.S. states in shipbuilding with 63,650 jobs, far and above any other state. These jobs pump more than $5.5 billion into Virginia’s economy every year.

Hendry Builds Drydock at Port of Tampa – February 3, 2014. Hendry Corporation, a shipbuilding and repair facility located at the Port of Tampa has just completed building a new 2,500-ton drydock at its facility located on Port Hendry. The drydock, named the ‘CAPT. F.M. HENDRY,’ is capable of lifting ocean going tugs, barges and vessels completely out of the water for inspection and repair. “With the addition of this new drydock we will be able to significantly increase our capabilities and position ourselves strategically for the future,” said Joe Cimino, Vice President of Hendry Corporation. The dock will allow us to build and repair larger vessels than we could previously handle.” Ship Recycling Supports Maritime Academies – February 4, 2014 From office equipment and furniture, to single-family homes, the U.S. Government periodically auctions property it no longer needs. In doing so, it makes money from aging Federal assets that can be used to better serve the American people. So what does the Government do with a 450-ft long, 10,000 ton, federally-owned, commercial ship that has reached the end of its operational life? How do you ensure that a vessel that is longer than a football field is disposed of in an environmentally responsible way that also benefits our nation? The answer is, "You recycle it.” And since 2001, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) has worked with domestic steel recyclers to turn more than 200 obsolete ships into steel that can be used again. Valuable metals can also be reclaimed, and oils onboard can be recycled.

ASRY Slipway repairs six vessels simultaneously – March 4, 2014 ASRY, a ship and rig repair yard in the Arabian Gulf, recently saw six vessels under repair simultaneously on its dual slipways in a sign that the yard’s small and medium sized vessel repair business continues to flourish since the opening of the its state-of-the-art slipways. Slipway occupancy at ASRY has risen year on year since they were opened in 2008, with 2013’s revenues attributed directly to slipway work increasing 7.24% on 2012. The contribution to ASRY’s overall revenue has also seen gains since they were launched. Last year the slipways contributed 6.5% of total revenues for the yard. The six vessels, comprising four tugs, a hopper dredger and a jack-up rig, matched the previous record for number of vessels accommodated simultaneously on the slipways. ASRY Signs Solas Agreement – March 5, 2014. ASRY, a ship and rig repair yard in the Arabian Gulf, is expanding its range of in-yard services by signing a Service Agreement with Solas Marine Services Group. The Agreement will allow Solas to build a 2,000-square-meter Service Center for Life Boats, Life Rafts and Fire Fighting & Life Saving Appliances in ASRY, which will not only expand ASRY’s services portfolio, but also bring new business opportunities to the Kingdom itself. This is the first development in a programme of increasing ASRY’s technical resources, which will continue to roll out in 2014. ASRY already boasts a leading line-up of in-yard workshops, but is investing in even more third-parties setting up in the yard, with a view to maintain its reputation as a one-stop solution for all marine repairs. ASRY Chief Executive, Nils Kristian Berge, and ASRY Technical Resources & Business Development General Manager, Magdy Moustafa signed the agreement with Solas Marine Services Group General Manager Sanjay Prabhu. HSOG Launches Apprenticeship Programme – March 6, 2014 HS Ocean Group (HSOG) celebrates National Apprenticeship Week by committing to long-term Apprenticeship programme. The marine services specialist HSOG has launched a formal Apprenticeship training programme following the successful progression of its first ever apprentices. The global company – which has offices in 12 countries across four continents – engaged six apprentices at its McTays Shipyard and Warbreck Engineering facilities in Merseyside last year. The apprentices are training across a range of disciplines including steelwork, fabrication, mechanical fitting, machining and engineering. Lee Foster, HSOG Chief Operating Officer, said, “We are delighted to announce our Apprenticeship programme to tie in with UK National Apprenticeship Week 2014.
