April
2013
The year 2013 marks another milestone for the company as Shop-
wise celebrates 15 years of retail service to the Philippine market.
This issue pays tribute to the many past and present successes of
Shopwise, and the company as a whole. We begin with a special
message from DVT, as shared with everyone, in commemoration of
the Shopwise Thanksgiving Celebration held last April 11, and the
successful evening that was…
I enjoyed
very much
our party
last night.
We are not
just retailers
we are also
w a r r i o r s
spending most of our time and
energy working hard and fight-
ing battles. It was truly a pleas-
ure to pause for a while and
spend a relaxing evening to-
gether as one family. I think we
should try to do this more often;
we should go out of our way to
stay connected on a personal
level like last night, especially as
we become a bigger and bigger
company.
It was a simple and meaningful
celebration. Brothers and sisters,
we have so many reasons to
celebrate. I am proud of the 11%
growth that you were able to
produce last year. Shopwise is
now a P12 billion company that
provides full time employment to
over 2,000 people and their
families. This does not include
the thousands of other employ-
ees we have that are disers, or
contractuals, etc. We also have
by far the lowest turnover in our
industry. Our employees stay
with the company for years and

2013 Marks 15 Years of Shopwise

After 15 years of retail excellence, Shopwise is inducted into the Outstanding Filipino Re-
tailer’s prestigious Hall of Fame for being the best in Hypermarket Category. See page 5.
years. WE have about 300 offi-
cers; over half of these officers
came from the ranks. Shopwise
is nurturing from within. What
an awesome achievement! This
is QUALITY FOR ALL employ-
ees in action.
And yet what fills me with pride
is not only WHAT you have
done; but even more impor-
tantly HOW you have done it.
What makes Shopwise spe-
cial are the QUALITIES I
would associate with a GOOD
and LOVING Father.
Like a good and loving fa-
ther, you have a lot of STAM-
INA. You work endlessly, quietly
and many times thanklessly.
Like a good father, you are AM-
BITIOUS, you have and pursue
great dreams not for your own
good but for the greatness of
your family. Like a good father,
have INTEGRITY. You know
that whatever you do to your
reputation, good or bad, passes
on to your children. Like a good
father, you are HUMBLE and
FAITHFUL. Many times, you
sacrifice the ME for the WE.
You are the FATHER not only
of the employees that work in
Shopwise, but also of the
whole RSCI. 3,700 employees
need you to be a good and
strong father. Once upon a time
Rustan’s was a damsel in dis-
tress. You saved her at a very
heavy price of P2.2 billion, and
now she is in, and of herself, a
beautiful, powerful wife and
equal partner. You also have a
child in WELLCOME, with the po-
tential to be the greatest mem-
ber of our family ever; for as
long as this child has your sup-
port and guidance.
RSCI is one family; like a good
Father, Shopwise is a pillar of
strength, major breadwinner,
and protector.
Your achievements are extraordi-
nary already; but they pale in
comparison to the great future
that lies ahead of us especially
since we are now also part of the
Dairy Farm Group.
Happy 15th! You have fought and
won many battles, enriched
many lives over 15 years. May
you continue to be amongst the
strong who strengthen the weak.

over the last few
months as our act-

build a very efficient internal fi-
nancial management system. He
has also trained not only our fi-

also, more importantly, business
owners to become much better
P&L managers. He has also given
us new skills and tools for making
financial decisions. He has agreed

because this was the only
chance for us to be seen on
TV!)
The whole program made the
employees aware of the sim-
ple things we do to make the
organization successful. Like
in the TVC, each actor/actress
played a role in coming up
with one message. Internal
talents were used to convey a
very important message and,
the goal was achieved simply
because these employees said
YES!
by Aggie Artadi
“Lights, camera, action!”
That’s what was heard all
throughout the 1 shooting
day of the Yes to Success
commercial. That sunny
morning of September 2011
brought together a number
of RSCI employees cast to
portray different personali-
ties embodying our values
in our first ever in-house
commercial. Some were
clutsy, some were stiff, oth-
ers nervous and some, like
Kerwin, were just natural-
born stars. What was it like
being a part of this activity?
What was it like being a star
for a day? What did they
feel having their faces splat-
tered all over our offices?
Let’s hear it from the stars
of the YTS commercial
themselves…
Honestly, I really don't know
why I was chosen. Bakit nga
ba? Nevertheless, I felt privi-
leged to be part of this very
important campaign. I be-
lieve that these values are
very important to our organi-
zation and I was glad to be
part in conveying these val-
ues to everyone. Ang hirap
pala to be the leading man.
Naks! Seriously though, the
experience taught me to be
patient due to several
takes...hehehe…, and pa-
tience is indeed a virtue. The
more you concentrate and
focus on your role, the less
mistakes you make. The
shoot took the whole day.
People were very tired, but

I played the part of an SA pilfer-

store Manager in the scene. Al-
though it was just a supporting 6
embody in our work and daily

to succeed as a company and as
an individual. I think this was a
fun, creative way of “preaching”
these. I am thankful that in my
own little way, I was able to con-
tribute in making our core values
known to the organization.
My first reaction was
disbelief. “Me, star in

What role will I play?”

What Does Success Mean to You?
roles to play and have been
equipped with wonderful talents
to use and showcase to delight
our Creator. In 1989, I came to
know God in a personal way,
since then I have experienced
continuous success, and have
looked at failure as a stepping
stone to more successes to
come.
Stephanie Ann
Ong, Store
Head, Well-
come Farmers
Success is a mat-
ter of one's sense of fulfilment.
It's the end process of over-
coming challenges, trials and
obstacles in any aspect of life.
I was a single mom at a very
young age (17). Being a young
mom and a student could have
been difficult for me but it
never was, because of the full
support from my family. I
wanted to give back to my par-
ents their pride so they will still
be proud of me as their daugh-
ter. I know that somehow I was
able to show my family my ap-
preciation of their love, and
that I was able to overcome
one of my most challenging
years of my life.
Selina Romualdez,
Rustan’s Cebu
Marketing & Mer-
chandising Man-
ager
Success is a combi-
nation of experiences that led me
to where I am now. It is a continu-
ous journey and learning experi-
ence rather than a goal. For me,
the meaning of success changed
throughout the different stages in
my life. As a working mother, it
has brought me to the realization
that one can be successful in bal-
ancing work and family. It is when
I realized that I have accomplished
various milestones in my life; from
graduating with a dual degree, to
marrying the love of my life, being
blessed with 2 beautiful kids and
having a dream job that allows me
to pursue so many enriching ex-
periences. I am grateful to be a
part of this company who can bring
out the best in me.

Success is being able
to accomplish goals
and plans no matter what the out-
come is. What is important is the
feeling of satisfaction and fulfil-
ment after completing each under-
taking.
Experiencing success should be
constant and endless, big or small.
Just getting by each day and being
able to balance my life with family,
work, friends and spiritual well-
being is success in itself. A recent
accomplishment is seeing my two
sons graduate in Kinder and Grade
6 with honors, both were also ac-
celerated by one school year! A
success sweetly shared with my
loving husband… 18

Moving Up the Corporate
Ladder Means You Have
To...
Demonstrate a Strong Capac-
ity for Growth
Show the ability to evolve your
thinking and the capacity to ex-
pand your skills. The capacity for
growth requires you to have a
thirst for knowledge and the abil-
ity to learn new things. Other-
wise, you will become irrelevant
quickly.
Possess an Attractive
Attitude
Attitude is everything. But,
you do not only have to pos-
sess a great attitude, but a
likable one at that. People
must like working with you—if
they like your attitude, your
aptitude has a better chance
of being discovered. Be help-
ful, show humility, be optimis-
tic, and show empathy to-
wards others. Help others be-
come successful too.
Have the Courage to Think
Big and Take Risks
Be bold and daring. This helps
you think, act, and innovate in
ways that come naturally to
you. Follow you gut, put your
capabilities to the test and
seize the opportunity to shine.
Earn the Trust of Others
Being trustworthy is a power-
ful asset, and essential for
getting promoted. It is not
enough to just be likable. You
must know how to build rap-
port, be a master at resolving
conflicts, and be diplomatic
with people.
Be Loyal at All Costs
Being loyal to your company is
paramount to your success.
Your personal values must be
totally aligned with the organi-
zation for you to be uncondi-
tionally loyal.
