ANZAC Commemorations On Friday, 24th April Mr Honeywell, Bailey and Mitch represented Newcomb
Secondary College at the ANZAC ceremony at Johnstone Park along with many
other schools from around Geelong.
We listened to Mr Andrew Hanns, President of the Geelong RSL, deliver a speech
on the ANZAC spirit and what it means to us.
We laid a wreath on behalf of the College to remember those who served.
Afterwards there was a reception for the schools at City Hall where the Mayor of
Geelong spoke with students afterwards.
Our school Student Captains Toby and Amanda led a well received and respectful
ANZAC service.
The College Senior Concert Band played in front of a huge audience at the Ocean
Grove ANZAC Day Commemorations last Saturday. They played in the new arena
with poise and control and were well appreciated by the gathering.
Well done and thanks to all of the Concert Band members and Mrs Stabryla, Mrs
Bourke and Mr Crowther.

IN MY CLASSES
Year 11 Hospitality Training
Year 11 VCAL students are perfecting their coffee making skills in a weekly Barista course run at the Gordon.
Students began with learning how to grind the coffee for the best extraction, moved onto texturing the milk,
and this week even roasted their own coffee beans to be used at our next session. Students have learnt how
to create the gamut of coffees from the Café Latte to the Long Macchiato and have especially enjoyed the hot
chocolates.
This program is part of a larger hospitality course run for Newcomb Secondary College Year 11 VCAL
students in conjunction with the Gordon TAFE and has also given students the opportunity to earn their
Responsible Service of Alcohol, Safe Food Handling, Clean and Tidy Bar, and Sandwich preparation
certificates. This has been a thoroughly enjoyable program for the students involved which directly increases
their employability skills and readiness for work.

Somebody’s Daughter Theatre Company
Last Wednesday we had the privilege of Somebody's Daughters Theatre Company performing part of their drama play to a
group of our students. Our students were impressed and appreciative of the talent, skills and professionalism that was delivered
to them. After the play our students participated in a workshop with the Theatre Company which gave insight to performance,
expressions, teamwork and leadership skills. An incredibly successful and amazing experience for our staff and students. A few
students wish to continue this work with Somebody's Daughters at Geelong Courthouse and will perform a Drama Play at the
end of the year.
A huge thank you to the Directors, Teachers and Actors from Somebody's Daughters and to our students who participated, it
was challenging and confronting but they all gave it an amazing go.

STUDENT INSURANCE
School Injuries and Insurance Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any
transport costs. Most medical costs will be refundable by Medicare. If you are a member of an ambulance or health insurance
fund, you may also be able to claim transport or other expenses from the fund.
Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys,
sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. The Department of Education and Training does not hold insurance
for personal property brought to school, does not hold accident insurance for school students and it has no capacity to pay for
any loss or damage to such property.
Is other insurance cover available? Yes.
The Department is aware of two insurers, JUA Underwriting Agency Pty Ltd and Willis Australia Ltd, that provide accident
insurance policies for students. These policies provide specific benefits for students who are injured in accidents for a
reasonably low cost. Other insurers may also provide a similar policy.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE/BACHELOR OF MUSIC – At Monash University you can now combine your
passion for music with a solid foundation in the sciences with this new double degree. There is a wonderful synergy between the passion for creating music and a love of scientific knowledge. Choosing between the two can be
difficult, so why not consider making the most of your talents and study both music and science in a double degree. Physics,
maths and music are related to the art and science of acoustics, however their links are much more extensive. The latest
developments in physics, psychology, human biology, materials science, information science and statistical analysis all give us
new answers to ancient questions about music – what it is, why we make it, how we make it, why we listen to it and how it is
changing. Research into the possibilities of music is ongoing, creating new jobs dedicated to the many effects of music, music
perception and the performance and technical underpinnings of instruments. Alternatively, you could combine your
knowledge of physics, mathematics and computing to become a sound engineer.
